Cannot reinstall Windows Vista because the Windows.old file is corrupted.

I hope someone can help! I'm about to pull out my hair! :)

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1720, under Windows Vista Home Premium, with 3 GB of ram. SP2

I had problems with error messages

Here are some of the messages I was getting.

"Dell Quickset has stopped working"

"Windows Management Instrumentation has stopped working"

"The user profile service has stopped working".

"Windows Update has stopped working"

There were a couple more but I do not remember. They are all gave me the ability to check online for a solution I have chosen and the message would go for a while, but not forever.

I'm tired of dealing with him, so I used my Dell disk to reinstall Vista. I did not choose the repair option first. I chose to do a clean install. When I got to the last step where it says "Complete the Installation", it gave me an error message telling me that the "Windows.old" file is corrupted. I do not have wright the rest of the information down, but he told me to run the check disk utility. (I think it has been shown as chkdsk). I clicked 'OK' and the screen went black and stayed like that for an hour. I turned off the computer and repeat all the steps but always goes to the black screen and stops. I tried to use the fix and it found a problem immediately and that fixed it, but after reboot, same thing. Yesterday I ran again the repair option, and it still works today. All night and nothing. She is still ongoing as I type this message. My question is how to run disk utility to check without an operating system installed? Use the "Diagnostic" option when I boot the disk from Dell? Any ideas on how I can get reinstalled Vista?

Boot from the Dell cd and run diagnostics

    Hi Lydia,.

    There are three services that are important to check, download and install the updates. These services are Background Intelligent of cryptographic services service and the Windows update Service. These should be in the started state and currently running on the computer so that the computer connects to Windows Update Server, check the update that corresponds to the computer, and then download them accordingly.

    Follow the steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2730071 and make sure that these services are started on the computer. If they are, then if he please stop and then restart the services. Restart the computer once that change in services.

    I downloaded the iso file for vista, the restore disc but it not start when I restart my computer. what im supposed to do or am I missing something?

    You need to change the boot sequence:

    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Follow these steps to try to solve your problems of boot.
    Restore point:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/Windows-Vista/using-Windows-Vista-system-restore/
    Do Safe Mode system restore, if it is impossible to do in Normal Mode.
    Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.
    Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...
    Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.
    http://www.windowsvistauserguide.com/system_restore.htm
    Read the above for a very good graph shows how backward more than 5 days in the System Restore Points by checking the correct box.
    If restore work not and you do not have a Vista DVD from Microsoft, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:
    Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
    When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.
It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.
    Error message I get is:
    File: \Windows\System32\hal.dll
    Status: 0xc000000f
    Info: Windows could not load because the HAL is missing or corrupt
    The changes that I do is I did a clean install of Linux deleting all partitions including the HP recovery partition.
    Now that I have to go back to Windows, I used the recovery disks that I did when I bought the laptop. It took about 24 hours to completely install, then I got this error message when you restart.
    Help, please
    Best thing to do is to nuke the drive,then reinstall Vista again.
    I know it's a long process, but you should get back to run.
    Linux makes strange recovery partitions does not understand and they are deleted correctly, boot and nuke will take care of it.
