Cannot restore files after reinstalling Vista

My problem is that doubles 1. Everything I know about building and nothing about computers and 2. When I had trouble with my Word program, IE. It took 10 to 15 minutes to load, someone suggested that I reinstalled it to try to solve the problem. There can be no. Then, he suggested I have reinstall full vista I did. He asked if I wanted to back up my files, to which I answered Yes. It took several hours to install fuly and when I got home he had finished and almost nothing on the screen except a few editing base.  He had of course saved and everything saved on the hard drive somewhere, I had a friend TI to throw a glance and he was not at all familiar with it. But he had found and restored in a file named "bob."  But the big problem is that I can not open an any of them as file extensions are unknown. I really need to bring them especially my photos. My backup of records were destroyed in a fire of the site office and all the photos of my partner who died since in a car accident, were there. So close they are tempting, but cannot display. I tried to Microsoft to take over my computer remotely and sort it out for me, but may not return to the right place in the vast world of Microsoft.
Anyone can help, but it must be in plain English and not the computer language.
My computer is a Dell Dimension 9200 and vista is small business. ;

Hello jonowlbarn,

Thank you for using the Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

Before you reinstalled Windows Vista didn't have you backed up your files? If so you back up your files on the same hard drive that Vista has been installed on?  If Yes, then performed reverse would be erased when you remove Vista.  I added some information below for that matter.  Please let us know status.  Thank you!

To make sure that you do not lose the files you create, edit and store on your computer, you must save the regularly. You can back up your files any time or manually configure automatic backups.

Note The ability to set up automatic backups is not included in Windows Vista Starter and Windows Vista Home Basic Edition.

1.

Open the backup center and restore by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then click backup and Restore Center.

2.

Click back up files, and follow the steps in the wizard. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

No backup files on the same hard disk that Windows is installed. For example, to make the back not files on a recovery partition. Always store media used for backups (external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs) in a safe place in order to prevent unauthorized access to your files; a separate fireproof place of your computer is recommended. You can also consider encrypting the data on your backup.

  • Cannot restore file bkf NAS to Vista Home Premium disk XP

I have a HP Pavilion a6220n PC desk top running Vista Edition Windows Home Premium.  Exploitation is corrupt is a couple of weeks, and I haven't had a recent backup of the C drive.  (I know...)  In any case, I could take the Vista machine's hard drive and connect it as a second hard drive on my XP machine.  Then, I was able to make a file bkf HD Vista on my 1 TB MyBookLive NAS drive.  Then I put the HD Vista on the Vista PC.  And I was able to run the recovery partition recovery procedure.  Of course, he wiped the C drive but Vista works again like factory.

So now, I need to restore the file the MyBookLive drive on the Vista machine bkf.  I thought it would be easy.  I discovered that the restoration of Vista does not recognize the bkf file types.  But the Vista restore utility had a link explaining that I could download a backup NT and restore and it would be able to restore a bkf file type in a Vista machine.  So I downloaded the NT utility.  But when I ran, the NT utility doesn't seem to be able to find the MyBookLive disk.  It does not seem to have all the options restore from a network drive.

So my next bright idea was to buy a Toshiba 1 TB USB HD.  I figured I'd just copy the NAS MyBookLive to the Toshiba HD bkf.  I tried on the XP machine, and I got an error that says I don't have enough disk space.  I guess this means that the C XP disk doesn't have enough free space, because the MyBookLive and Toshiba HD have enough free space.  Moreover, the bkf file is LARGE (355GB).

OK, so I decide to use the Vista machine to copy the bkf file.  I can map to the NAS MyBookLive and see the bkf file.  And the Toshiba HD is automatically recognized by Vista.  The C-drive Vista has 327 GB free.  And again, I got the same error - not enough disk space.

I started to compress the bkf file in a file of rar on MyBookLive, using the XP utility.  Original estimate was 66 hours remaining.  I decided to give up this idea because I don't know if it will even work and wouldn't wait for 66 hours to find out.  My hope was that if the compressed file was smaller, so I could copy the compressed on the Toshiba HD.

So here I sit with a disk network MyBookLive bkf file.  And I need to restore this information on the Vista machine.  If anyone knows how to restore directly from the network drive MyBookLive to the Vista, which would be preferable.  Next ideal if anyone knows how to copy a file, bkf 355GB since the network MyBookLive on the Toshiba USB HD drive, then I might be able to restore from the Toshiba USB HD on the Vista machine.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

GEEK SQUAD came to the rescue. Agent Hugo Westminster, CO Best Buy suggested I get the error "insufficient disk space" because USB Toshiba HARD drive is formatted in "FAT32" format of file at the factory.  He recommended fitness to "NTFS".  I did and was able to copy the large bkf file (it took about 12 hours).

I have now connected USB Toshiba HARD drive into the Vista machine.  And "NT Backup and Restore" was able to recognize it.  It is now trying to restore the backup of the files on the desktop to Vista PC.  I'll know in a few hours if the restore was successful.

The restore operation did turn out to be successful.

  • Cannot locate the network after reinstalling Vista

I just had to reinstall vista (based on the recommendation of the forum do how can I install/uninstall anything one way). Now I can't connect to the internet, or my network. I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1525.

It seems that I reinstalled the network adapter - at least when I started there was no category "network adapters" in the Device Manager, and now he has one with Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller under it.

Thanks to a different compurter I downloaded the thing Dell told me to download when I typed in my Service tag.

Also, I downloaded and installed the service packs 1 and 2 since for Vista, since I knew that they were on my orginal OS.

In looking at the network and sharing Center, it seems that network discovery is turned off.  I tried to turn it on, but nothing happens.

Any ideas on what to try next?

In addition, I don't know if it's relevant or not, but when I reinstalled my OS, I thought everything would be gone, but the memory is always at the same level as it was before resettlement.

    Much obliged,

    Gregg
