When I tried to save as a file, I get an error msg:
"Cannot save (file name) because the file is already in use or left open."

The file is unwilling to accept any Photoshop.

Mac Pro, OSX 10.5.6
Photoshop CS4.

I searched the Forum but did not find anything even though I'm sure someone has already asked it.

would love to get a solution for this.

If Photoshop says that the file is opened - then some external process left the file open. It has nothing to do with it being open in Photoshop, or even in the bridge. This sometimes happens when Spotlight had bugs (who came more than once and been corrected in versions of dot operating system).

The external process could be another application or service to OS like Spotlight.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It is unlikely to solve your problem. Don't be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    The test is intended to determine if the problem is caused by a third-party software that loads automatically at startup or logon, by a device, by a police conflict or corruption of system files or some system caches.

    Disconnect all devices wired except those required to test and remove all the expansion cards from secondary market, as appropriate. Start in safe mode and log on to the account of the problem.

    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or an earlier version, or if a firmware password is defined, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can not do this. Ask for additional instructions.

    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run as normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things work at all, including an audio output and a Wi - Fi connection on some models. The next normal boot can also be a bit slow.

    The login screen is displayed even if you usually connect automatically. You need your password to log on. If you have forgotten the password, you will have to reset it before you begin.

    Test in safe mode. Same problem?

    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and make sure you always have the problem. View the results of the test.

    I have a lot of problems with the CC 2014 Illustrator. And it me freaks out. I have no idea how to join Adobe. I tried another forum of Adobe but you have not heard anything... I would appreciate some kind of help. Or if someone knows where to ask the question?

    If no more luminous suggestion starts, you can try the list, see below.

    Have you fully installed on both computers (after upgrading the operating system if necessary)?

    The following is a general list of things, try when the question is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by problems with opening a file from external media. You tried/made some of them already; 1 and 2) are easier for temporary strangenesses and 3) and 4) specifically preferences might be corrupt); ((5) is a list in itself and 6) is the last resort.

    If possible / there is, you must record a current work first, of course.

    (1) close Illy and open again.

    (2) restart the computer (you can make up at least 5 times);

    (3) close Illy and press Ctrl + Alt + Shift / Cmd + Option + shift during startup (easy, but irreversible);

    4) move the folder (follow the link with this name) with closed Illy (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you can find the file here:

    I have a big file (3500x8300px) where I worked on Photoshop CS4 and I tried to save it after working on it for about 30 minutes and got the following message: "Cannot save as"Filename"because of a program error."  I tried saving them as .psd, .tif, .pdf, .jpg, even and received the same message every time.  I closed down all other software to make sure that there is enough memory available, but nothing helped.  I then my MBP and wait until the next day hoping it was just a small problem and could work later.  I opened the next day (the question save oversight) and worked on the file for a few hours and then I tried re-register. (when I remembered the question... too late... the work was already done).  Nope... still doesn't let me save it.  I'm afraid I have to restart the program, but cannot afford to lose this job.  Any thoughts on how to fix it?

    * note: I tried "save for web" and it allowed me to save it as a flattened image (although rather slow due to the size of the file), but I need it in layers.

    Yes, I tried everything above, and none of it seemed to work.  The only thing that would work was to SFW .gif or .jpg (would not allow png).  However, after recording the second layer as a gif, overall the program has frozen and I was unable to recover.  Well... here again!  (maybe I can convince my boss to upgrade to CS5).
