Cannot use Windows Update, firewall, Live games. Suspects of virus?

Hello

I am currently using an Alienware M17x and there are a few problems.

Recently, I downloaded a game requiring a signature in Windows Live games and order I had to update the client. However, Games for Windows Live could not update and gave me an error code of 0 x 80070424. I also got this same error code when I tried to turn on the firewall in pressinng the button "Use recommended settings" in the control panel > system and security > Windows Firewall page.

I then tried to manually install the Games for Windows Live client, but he couldn't do it because 'a required Windows component is disabled on your machine. I checked the fix for this problem in the Microsoft Web site, and he asked me to locate the "Background Intelligence Transfer Service' in my services, which has proven to be missing. Also, the automatic update service disappeared.

Another problem that I recently noticed was that audio files randomly the movies will begin playing while my computer is running. I first thought that it was a website or popup while I was surfing the net, but I closed all the programs I was running, and the noise continued to play. Goose bumps...

I did some reading, and the closest thing I can relate to this is the Conficker Virus, but I hope that it is something more easy to remove...

Any help is greatly appreciated, because this virus seems to be the stubborn type!

You may need to restore the factory settings, so be sure to back up any data you want to save while you still can.  In the meantime, here are some things you can try.

Get your updated antivirus program and boot into Safe Mode. Note that some viruses can hide from your normal antivirus program, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode. To enter in Safe Mode when you turn on first, press F8 on every seconds until you get the menu, and then select Safe Mode. Then run a complete system scan.

If that suits him fine. If this is not the case, use system restore to go back to an earlier date at the beginning of the problem. To run system restore, click Start-> programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> system restore. Click on the box that says show more restore points.

-

You can check the corrupted system files. Open an administrator command prompt and run SFC if the above does not help. Click START, and then type CMD in the search box, right-click on CMD. EXE and click run as administrator. Then, from the command prompt type sfc/scannow.

-

Finally if all else fails, you can look at the rather cryptic system event log. To make, click Start-> Control Panel-> administration-> event viewer tools. Once in Event Viewer system log-click and scroll entries looking for these "error" with indicator see if you can find guidance on where the problem may be.

`

When you get your system in good working condition, I invite you to back up your system up to an external hard drive and make it regular periodic updates.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

    I can't using Windows Update for two 'critical updates of security". I got anumber of error messages, but the last was 0x800A0007. This is nowhere on their support pages. Can someone suggest a possible solution?  (If I can solve this problem, I can get IE9 fixing.) With the help of Windows XP Edition family

    The two KB982132 and KB972270 updates failed to install (twice) with error message that appears now is no longer on the 0x8007001F support page.

    Hi all... I HAVE WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL FOR 7 YEARS NOW. WINDOWS UPDATE NEVER GAVE ME ANY PROBLEMS. HONESTLY, I'VE TRIED SO MANY THINGS, INCLUDING READING AS WELL... BEFORE IT WOULD DISPLAY AND I CLICKED ON SEARCH FOR UPDATES AND HE BEGAN HIS RESEARCH. (INCIDENTALLY I'VE UPDATED AUTOMATICALLY UPDATES OF WINDOWS). IM A PERFECTIONIST AND EVEN IF THEY UPGRADE THEMSELVES AND TIMED AT 03:00 AND MY PC RESTARTS. WHEN I BRING UP WIN XP A BALL COMES OUT BY THE CLOCK INDICATING

    UPDATES HAVE BEEN INSTALLED A ND PC HAS RESTARTED AUTOMATICALLY. NOW, WHEN IT OPENS, HE SAID, YOU MUST USE ACTIVE X CONTROL FOR THIS PAGE. (OR VERY, VERY CLOSE TO THAT) MY PC HAS BEGUN TO BE IRRACTIC. I KNOW HOW TO GET AROUND THE WHOLE PC,

    BUT IM NOT A GURU, BUT I DO NOT THINK IM LACK OF UPDATES. MY FATHER RECEIVED 11 UPDATES ABOUT 7-10 DAYS AGO.  NOW, HE HAS TO WIN. XP

MINE has BEEN PRE-INSTALLED WHEN I GOT MINE, BUT this is 2006 and I won't disrespect, but Ive asked for help a couple of times and nobody answered. I was supported for updates are free to charge.and more important according to me, the updates, I "couldn't not got downloaded" has affected my computer stability and im concerned cuz it took me 2 years saves by working 60-65 hours per week.  IM sending this a short todim of ideas. don't get me wrong, but little help from msn or from dell can be $100.00

    Ive asked for help a couple of times and no answer...

    It's strange - according to your profile page, this is your first post in the forums for answers. That being said...

    Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a numbered list type in your very next answer (no need to quote this post):

    1. What is the full name of your application or the installed antivirus security suite and when (date about) is your subscription current expires?  What (other than Defender) anti-spyware applications are installed?  What third-party firewall (if applicable)?

    2 a Norton or McAfee application ALREADY installed on the computer?

    3. do you have a free trial Norton or a test of free McAfee [CHOOSE ONE ANSWER] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (No matter if you have never used or activated).

    4. open Add/Remove Programs and make sure that Show updates at the top is checked (and leave it checked); then select the name in the box sort by on the right. Now scroll down & tell me who, if necessary, the following updates ARE listed?

    (a) KB2698365, KB2718523, KB2691442, KB2655992 & KB2719985;

    (b) KB2699988, KB2685939 & KB2707511;

    (c) KB2676,562, KB2659262, KB2686509, KB2695,962 , & KB2718704;

    (d) KB2653956; KB2661637, KB2598479, KB2631813 & KB2585542;

    (e) KB2393802 and in particular the Update for Windows XP (KB971029).

    Most will appear as Windows XP security update , followed by the number in brackets.

    If IE8 is installed, one (1) appears as a security for Windows Internet Explorer 8 update , followed by the number in parentheses.

    Try to use Windows Update to install 2 updates (Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Vista) and an a security update Cumulative for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista KB253048. It's on a laptop at home unique stand alone, works with Windows Vista Home Premium SP2.

    Windows Update initially reported two updates correctly installed and asks me to restart the PC, what I'm doing. Before the connection at the reboot prompt, I get a message saying "updates are not configured correctly. Restoration of the changes. It is the next messages saying: step 1/2/3 of 3 0% complete.
    After I then connect I get the message ' Windows to not install important updates.

    Update history reveals the KB253048 cannot install (error 80070005), but IE9 installed successfully. However when click on the IE icon and run Internet Explorer version 8 of Internet Explorer, I get, not version 9.

    I tried to do this several times on 2 days, but get same problem.

    This gives a shot.
