Carry the HTTP versus Email Gateway

Which mode is usually preferred for the Transport gateway: HTTP or email? Are there advantages to use one mode rather than the other?

Do not forget to speak with someone from Cisco on it and remember that they had some good arguments for which mode has been a favorite, but I can not remember the content of this discussion, it seems to me

We must separate the if we are talking about traffic in the terminal (router, switch, UCS to the transport gateway) traffic from the Cisco Smart Call Home backend transport gateway or terminal directly to the Smart Call Home of Cisco backend.

The transport gateway is essentially a proxy server for your devices in the range while the terminals themselves do not have to speak through the internet. Any worthy of their name network engineer blocks the traffic generated by their devices (routers, switches) infrastructure to the internet for security reasons. The only exceptions, that I might consider would be firewalls that are sitting at the boundary between the internet and internal network. I leave those to communicate directly with the Cisco Smart Call Home via HTTPS backend. But I'd probably rather they speak to the Transport gateway and allow only the transport gateway to speak through the internet for the Cisco Smart Call Home backend, so you can more easily track outbound communications.

Traffic from end devices to the transport gateway, I recommend you to HTTPS. The downside is more complicated to install the certificate. This would encrypt the traffic between the terminal and the gateway of transport. Or we can assume that the internal network is secure against eavesdropping. In this case, any method (email, http, https) to the transport gateway is fine. I don't like this kind of support.

When I use e-mail? Well, some devices like the UCS can only do email so there is no other choice. The UCS send an email to the email address of the transport gateway and the gateway of transport can download it. Unfortunately, the high-end devices is simple SMTP on port 25, which is sent in the clear (unencrypted) from the terminal on the mail server.

For traffic from gateway transport for the Smart Call Home, the transport gateway backend it always crypt via HTTPS to send to the backend Smart Call Home of Cisco.

So you might ask: "If the terminal can send * email * to Smart Call Home backend Cisco directly. Yes, but this is not recommended because it is sent in the clear (unencrypted) through the internet.

You might also ask: "What about anonymous Smart Call Home?" Well, in this case, the customer doesn't have a smartnet contract and help Cisco Reporting crashes on their device to end (like Windows error reporting, and reporting of errors to Apple). The terminal automatically configure and make an HTTPS connection directly to the Cisco's Smart Call Home backend when it reports an error.

Cisco is transitional software for anonymous clients Smart Call Home to facilitate configuring HTTPS turns on and then saved configuration Call Home. This completely removes the configuration of the end-user certificate.
