Catalogs and Collections

Windows 7 and CS4 Production Premium, LR3, and Acrobat X I just got LR3.3 then this application is new to me. I currently use a non Adobe application for my image database management. My images are primarily associated with the work of genealogy saved as TIFF uncompressed. Right now I have 5716 files in 68 cases. It is organized as follows: the highest level is by family name (6 files). Each of these folders contain 9 other subfolders that represents the content of the image; for example, people, brothers and sisters, family, etc. Among the higher level folders is used to contain images that have many of the family name in the image. In addition to these genealogy records, there are other folders that contain pictures sorted according to certain characteristics, such as travel, scenic, trains, planes, etc. Using the current terms of the request, I maintain a catalog for each subfolder. This is a thumbnail of each image in this folder with the name and the description of IPTC caption 'title '. I make extensive use of IPTC metadata for each image: title, Description, title, keywords, and Instructions. I want to understand the LR3 catalogs and collections, and collections smart before you begin the transition to LR3. Q1: whenever I add a new image to my hard file storage folder, I have to add it manually to the LR catalog? With my current application, when a folder is selected in this application, it searches the folder changes and the new thumbnails are generated for new files. Q2: A smart collection seems built by keywords in the catalog in LR3 and the non-smart collection must be created manually from the LR3 catalog... Fix? Q3: When I create a collection of "key words" can parts of filename structure be included (not placed in metadata keyword) in building criteria? Q4: Thought to use a catalog in LR3 for my genealogy pictures and one for my non-genealogie images. Then use collections (chip or non-smart to determine) for each of my subfolders. His reasonable? Q5: Can I do a search on the catalog via keywords without a defined collection name? It would be a temporary Assembly of images only. Q6: Can I print the catalog, either a collection with the file name and IPTC (e.g., Headline) data under each thumbnail?

What I wanted was to avoid a two-step process: place the image of the 'original' in a folder from the hard drive, then import in the catalog. I will maintain the architecture of the hard drive for several reason folder

Well, this is not automatic, but after you put new images in your folder, when you launch lightroom, right - click the folder and "synchronize the folder.  He will review the matter and propose to add anything, there.   So at least you don't have to remember what are the images to add or not; a bit easier than to try to use the import dialog box.

See you soon!

  • Catalogs and Collections?  Which is the correct way / better to organize a large library of images?

    Hi all

I decided to spend time in organizing and creating a backup decent system for my personal iibrary of images which is about 500Gig.

I used CaptureOne for years, but to do research the best software to use for this purpose, decided to jump in the use of Lightroom.

I am now reasonably confident with the basics of importing and creating catalogs / folders / Collections etc., but there seems to be a slight fracture on how people break there images using these tools.

Some people recommend that this is done by creating multiple catalogs is to say every year or even by use / event because it prevents LR latecomers under duress of a large portfolio.   Others say to keep catalogs to an absolute minimum and sort all Collections projects instead.

I am sure that there is no absolute right and wrong and a lot is probably down to personal preferences, but can I ask the community if you would mind throwing some advantages and disadvantages of each method please?

    Many thanks for any help

Some people recommend that this is done by creating multiple catalogs is to say every year or even by employment

It is a horrible idea which defeats the entire purpose of the Lightroom library Module. Any who recommend what needs to explain how it is preferable, because it isn't better somehow, in my opinion.

If you have multiple catalogs, you can not search for your set of photos. You find not all photos with particular metadata, you can find the photos with this metadata in a catalog.

because this would prevent late LR under the constraint of a major portfolio

A problem that does not exist. People in this area and other forums report catalogs more 500 000 pictures works well.

Others say to keep catalogs to an absolute minimum and sort all Collections projects instead.

Most people I know (including most of the people in this forum I've read) say to keep everything in a single catalog. Use keywords and other metadata, no collections, as your tool main body. Smart Collections are used as a mechanism of research (not a mechanism of "spell"). Regular collections are used to group the pictures together for a specific task, such as the creation of a book, slideshow, web page, etc. (again not a mechanism of "spell".

  • Export a collection of catalog and import into the catalog of my work on my iMac, color labels are missing.

During my project for my photography class, I have to shoot on site and edit the best photos with the model, on my MacBook. At home on my MacBook I export the collection newly created to a catalog (including negative files), copy the directory with the catalogue all the other files over the network and import the catalog into my standard catalog on my iMac. On my iMac, all the imported photos color labels went into my standard catalog, and very strange, color labels have also disappeared when I open the catalogue exported (and copied) on my iMac. Did I miss something?

I don't think it's something to do with the copy over a network.

My guess is that you have to look at metadata > color label set. Try to compare the settings on both computers. If they are different, a computer do not know what the other means red, yellow etc.

    Hi cjohnm,

You can use the 5 Lightroom Catalog and improve it in Lightroom 6, therefor all folders and collections will be identical in both version.

Open the Lightroom all holding the key Alt/Opt and select only the 5 Lightroom Catalog and it will switch to it.

Let us know if that helps.

  • Updated to LR CC (6.3 - latest version), want to know if I can delete LR 4/5 files catalog and cache.

I've upgraded to the latest version of LR CC and I was wondering if I could delete the LR 4 and 5 catalogues and preview the files without problem. I have been updated for a long time, and the files in question do not appear to have been used for the upgrade and transformed into CC/6 catalog.

    Hello

When the catalog is updated from the older version of the lightroom at Lightroom and you are able to access the catalog in the new version of the Lightroom.

Please make sure that all images and collections are there in the updated version.

You can remove the old version of Lightroom/Catalog/Cache.

  • Catalog or collection?

I have Lightroom CC on my desktop and laptop.  The Office being my primary catalog.  I want to spend some pictures, about a year's worth, to my laptop to work on a book.  I would create a new catalog, either a collection?  Also, because the photos I want to use were imported from opening, I don't think that it won't let me export a new catalog.

I recommend any workflow that involves images of export followed by import images.

The workflow that I recommend (and the one recommended by John Beardsworth above) are export in the catalog, and then import from another catalog. Because of this, if you need to perform additional editing on the image, work of the original and not from and exported copy. Using the approach of catalog, you keep also information catalog; If you export the images, some catalog information won't go along for the ride.

  • Records and photographs disappear from my catalog and LR but remain on my hard drive.

I'm totally frustrated.  I used LR for years without problem until in recent months.   I had folders disappear from my catalog.  Import photos from my card to my hard drive using the LR import feature.  I then note my photos, put some in the collections, use keywords and perform a basic treatment.  However when I get back later - the folder and photos are no longer in the catalog or anywhere in LR.  The photos remain on my hard drive in the same folder that I copied them originally.  I can import again in LR, but lose all the editing, cataloging, etc, I did the first time.  This has happened regularly in the past months.  Tonight, I have imported some new photos and realized that 13 files and hundreds of photos that I took 6/14-8/6 were missing from the catalog and the LR but are right where they are supposed to be on my hard drive.   This isn't a problem with linking a file in LR in the folder on the hard disk - file and the photos are not anywhere in the LR catalog...  I have no idea how to solve this problem.   I have no idea how to solve this problem.  Any ideas?  Help?

Do a search on your drive and see how many catalogues are about it. You are looking for *.lrcat. Sounds more like you have several catalogs and or you are using a type of system of automatic backup and for some reason LR among the old default catalog backups.

Either that or the catalog is being corrupted, which means you have a hardware problem. Could be the hard drive or RAM.

  • To other catalogs of Collections with Lightroom

Does anyone know if there is a way to move a collection to set a Lightroom Catalog to another Lightroom Catalog?

My workflow is like this: I have all my image files contained in folders on my drive. My main work stream is to separate my images in collections and work from there.

I have two different catalogs, that I worked, but I really want to work in a master catalog. However, I can't seem to find a way to transfer the collection sets with all my settings in a new catalog without physically moving the files. Is there a way to move the entire collection with its information, but not the files (and always linked to files on my disk?)

I tried to export the collection as a catalog, and then import the catalog, but this way wants to move my files.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

    -Murphy

I think (LR believes) that there are 48 images in this catalogue, but maybe you can't because you need to update? You may need to try the command synchronize folders on different folders (or folder ' root') and see if they appear. Clarify this point, and then try importing again. As I said, it worked like a charm on this end and did not move the originals.

  • Catalog/Records/Collection panels self-aggrandizing ' collapse in the library module

    Lightroom 4.3, Mac OS X 10.7.5

Maybe I'm just crazy today, but working in the library module, I swear I used to open the panels of catalogues, folders and Collections at the same time. Now, for example, I clicked on the records. So, to display the Collections Panel, I need to click on the arrow to the left of "Collections". Then I do. And Collections, at the same time automatically opens collapse folders. If I click on the left arrow to publish Services, he collapses Collections and opened Services to publish. "Navigator" is the only Panel I can keep open while one of the other is open.

Does make sense? I accidentally press a key or spoil a preference or something? I just tried to move in a different catalog, and I've also updated to 4.3 (I was on the previous version, when I noticed this problem this morning) but the problem remains. Am I missing something really obvious?

Never mind. I just thought of it by looking at two issues. Apparently, there's something called "Solo Mode" that does this. How I accidentally activated, I don't know. To resolve this problem, you just right-click on any dark section of a Panel and uncheck the "solo mode" option in the dropdown menu drop-down. I use Lightroom for years, and I'm still discovering things I didn't know.

    Thank you!

  • How can I restore images and collections to my LR4?

    Hello

I think I have a corrupted version of the LR4 and technology Adobe in India had on my computer remotely and me fucked really worse still.  It seemed to reset the system default and removed the plist (which I have on my desk), but the LR version now looming as it was 6 months ago and miss me him a lot of images, collections, etc.  His response was "well just re import the images and sorry I don't know MAC»  Gee, thanks!  I have a mac and don't know where from Time Machine restore or if I put the plist back will correct the problem.  Never return a senior tech call Adobe to help this issue.  If anyone can help... Please.  I am a professional photographer and must be able to work with my catalog as it was the other day.  I don't do the back upward in LR from East creates the duplicate files that is way too much space when you have more than 50 k images.

    Thanks for any help.

You must identify your previous catalog file, so do a Spotlight search for files with the extension lrcat. Usually, the catalog of work will be in pictures / Lightroom. First glance here, only later search in Time Machine.

LR closed it also create a backup of the catalog (it's catalog, not the images). This dialog box should appear at least once a week. Where are these backups in the Finder?

After that you are on the right track, I highly recommend that you get much more familiar with what is your catalog and how it is stored. This lrcat file is essential and you should not need to rely on external support unreliable.

  • Copy of Lightroom Catalog (and a bit more)

I am a newbie to Lightroom and quickly realized that I needed a better PC to make it the most.

Now I want to copy my old laptop WIn Vista to Win 7 machine Lightroom. I tried to extract the catalog, but he returned and said that all previews are missing.

My situation is this, all my RAW files are in a directory, and Lightroom is in a different directory, if I understand correctly, Lightroom does not touch the RAW files, but instead has only a 'list of changes' to do, so I guess my problem was - not able to find the RAW files, because they weren't in the Lightroom folder.

On my new PC, I want to rationalize things, like Lightroom will be my main tool for processing the photos now. Someone can give me some tips on how to get the data from my laptop and save it in the directory of Lightroom on my new PC?

    Thank you :-) in anticipation

    Steve

    Welcome!

Let's see... first: the copy of your catalog is very easy.  Just copy it as you would any other file.  He is happy like that.  No real reason to perform the export catalog and import catalog operations.

Your previews is not found, probably because you copy them.  Unless you have already a few 50 000 images in LR, I wouldn't bother.  Just tell LR to regenerate all the extracted when you are on your new machine.  I personally generate previews 1:1 when you import.  Under the library-> previews-> make it what you want.

There are a number of things, if you move your imags from one computer to another:

If you copy your images to the same exact path as before, then LR is automatically, since the refernce is stored in the catalog.  If you put them somewhere else (for example, you do not force-name your drive letter and she chose another) then complain LR (put a? mark in lists) saying that it can't find the image.  Just click right on the library page, on the top level for your missing images and tell LR folder to find them again.  It will allow you to navigate to the new location, and when select you, will connect it back up with everything below it as well.  easy!

If you want to "rationalize" things, you can organize your images a little differently.  Almost everyone will have a different option, you can count on that.  I import by date, and my format is major_catagory-> year-> year_mon-> year_mon_day-> (images) that the 'major_catagory' has been added recently, so I might have things like portraits, nature, industrial, etc., as well as separate structures, but still allow research on the entire database.  I use not having until I wanted a more easy way out just to the structure of a file, etc.  Still not sure if it's best for me, but it works for now.

When I import images, they automatically go into the right folder structure, I just need to select the top-level project.  Then when I do the editing and others, I do collections to group them in everything what I need.  Don't forget keywords!  Unfortuantely now, the window import always reset to "none", so you must manually reset the keywords, etc., to import.  You can create a user-defined set, but remember to select.  Previous versions of remind you lasted... like I could which selects again!

Anyway, you will find many opinions here... use the keywords and collections... who will help a lot.

    See you soon!

  • Scan and collect several pages to a document with hp8630

How can I scan, gather and save a document multiple pages in a single pdf document using a HP8630? Thank you.

    Hi @CoachPop,

I understand you want to know how to scan and collect several documents into one file. I'd love to help you.

If you use Windows, try the following steps:

The HP scanning software, select Advanced settings, click the file tab, and then uncheck the box create a separate file for each scanned image, which allows several scans of page save to a file.

If you are using a Mac, try the following:

The software overview, once you have the scanned image, select PDF and check combine in one document below.

In the printing and scanning window, select PDF and check combine in one document below.

What operating system do you use?

How to find the Windows Edition and the Version on your computer.

Mac OS X: how to find which Mac OS X Version is on my computer?

  • Using catalogs and folders in Dropbox from PC to iMac

    Hello

I bought an iMac, and I intend to stop using my PC for work with Lightroom.

All of my pictures and catalogues are currently stored in an external hard drive connected to the PC, in a Dropbox folder.

My plan is to download all data from Dropbox to the iMac, locally as it is, and then simply to go on using Lightroom on those catalogs and photos.

I have no synchronization issues because I no longer use the PC for Lightroom, and the PC will not have access to Dropbox longer.

This would work or should I take other measures to ensure that records created PC and catalogs will work on iMac?

    Thank you

    Daniele

I don't see what Dropbox is currently used for. You can simply move the external hard drive with the catalog file and folders to the iMac.

As the drive name is different on a Mac, there on the PC, you will need to reconnect the photos inside Lightroom, by following these instructions (see Figure 4 and associated text), Adobe Lightroom - find folders and files moved or missing
