Charged to new and already purchased

I bought a TV series via iTunes about 3 years ago.

I thought I would see the show again, but he was nowhere to be found when I looked for it in my TV Shows.

So I searched and 'bought' again. I say 'bought' because it was I think I understand that I would not be charged for this second "purchase."

I thought that Apple keeps track of my purchases and in a case like mine I would not be charged again.

But I was! What happens here? Is there a time limit on the number of times that they allow you to download a purchased item?

Cheers, John

If it is changed somehow, it is considered a different product.
