CHKDSK runs whenever I restart

Lately, whenever I restart my laptop, chkdsk runs.  Do take 3 hours for the retart finish.  I can I prevent this?  What is going on?

Hello DavidLPeterson, welcome.

This thread is actually in the wrong forum, however, I'm sure that one of the moderators happen at the appropriate place.
Windows will force the system to run CheckDisk if it detects problems with the hard drive. You may have a failed hard drive and Windows continues to try and fix it but failed. My suggestion would be to try to start safe mode and immediately back up your data.

Try this:

1. completely turn off computer
2. turn the computer and and immediately start pressing F8
3 hold down the F8 key until you are presented with a boot option menu
4. Select "Safe Mode with network.
5. once the system boots into Windows, go ahead and save your data. You can use a CD/DVD, Flash drive, external HARD drive, or transfer the files over the network

At this point, I contact the manufacturer of your computer, explain to them what is happening and ask them if they have material available, especially for the hard drive tests.

If the system tries to use CheckDisk when you start mode without fail, the only option you have is to wait until it finishes. You can use WinRE or a portable boot disk, however, I believe that this would involve more than necessary at this stage.

Let us know what happens

Thank you!

  • Make sure the disk is running whenever I start, and although I can access the internet, I can't open any websites.

Control of disk runs whenever I starts and then displays windows so I guess it solves the problem, but I can't open any websites, even if I get to the internet.  I got my connection verified by my internet provider and I had my system examined by the technical service of my provider of virus & protection all to nothing does not.   Where can I find the results of analysis of disk verification?  It basically says the disc must be check for compatibility, but at the end of the analysis, it publishes results for just a second.  Too fast to read.

It is good - now you know what the problem is and why XP prevents running chkdsk (he's trying to help you!).

Here is a link to the article from Microsoft KB on the XP Recovery Console:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/307654

You do not need 'install', you will have to 'use' then go to the section 'how to use the Recovery Console.  Save installation if for another day.

After step 4, you should be at the command prompt in the folder c:\windows.

If anything it of a little weird or don't look right, or you don't get it, stop and you can make a CD of bootable XP Recovery Console and use it.

Don't forget: you can't question the bit of impurity of the Recovery Console.  When the chkdsk /r is running clean (it may take more than one pass), reboot and see if chkdsk wants to run again or not, and then query the dirty bit again if you don't know what it is in the State.  The volume must be "not dirty" or chkdsk will want to turn on every restart, until it is.

Once in the Recovery Console, follow these steps:

The Recovery Console allows base as file commands: copy, rename, replace, delete, chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, cd, etc.

For a list of the commands in the Recovery Console, type help at the prompt of commands or read on here XP Recovery Console:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/proddocs/en-us/recovery_console_cmds.mspx?mfr=true

A good idea before you start things must first verify the integrity of your file system by using the chkdsk command.

In the command prompt window, run the chkdsk command on the drive where Windows is installed to try to fix any problems on the afflicted player.

Running chkdsk is fine, even if he finds no problem.  It won't hurt anything to run it.

Assuming your boot drive is C, run the following command:

    CHKDSK C: /r

Let chkdsk finish to correct the problems, he could find.

It may take a long time for chkdsk complete or they seem to be "stuck".  Be patient.  If the HARD drive led blinks always, chkdsk is something.  Keep an eye on the amount of the percentage to be sure that it is still making progress.  It may even seem to go back sometime.

You must run chkdsk/r again until it finds no error to correct.

Remove the CD, and then type "exit" to exit the RC and restart the computer.

You have not to set the BIOS to boot the disk HARD since the CD won't be.

  • CHKDSK runs automatically and checks my 2nd HARD drive and shows a lot of mistakes, 2nd HARD drive is gone.

Hi, I have 2 80 GB HDD (SATA - 1 + 2 - ATA). whenever I turn on my system (XP SP3) then chkdsk runs automatically

Can someone help me, I have my imp data on my 2nd HARD drive.
How do I return there without losing any data or file?

    Hello

    1. don't you make changes on the computer before this problem?
2 - is an internal hard drive?

Step 1: Check if hard driver is getting detected in Device Manager and send back the same.

    By using Device Manager
    http://www.Microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/proddocs/en-us/snap_dev_mgr.mspx?mfr=true

Step 2: Check if this disc is getting detected in disk management.

If the hard drive is getting detected in disk management and there is no drive letter assigned, and assign a drive letter and check.

Step 3: To disable chkdsk at startup, follow these steps:

    a. Click Start, run and type regedit.
    b.Navigate to the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

    c. change the BootExecute entry: autocheck autochk *.

  • CHKDSK runs at startup every time. FSUTIL shows a dirty car, even after chkdsk

A number of computers in my office started running chkdsk after an electricity failure. But now users report that whenever the computer starts chkdsk runs, unless they cancel it. I looked through a full chkdsk run (if there is a log file that I forgot where it is placed) and all seemed well. A restart after letting all the services of loading chkdsk ran. I have let it run, I tried sfc/scannow the result was clean. I ran as administrator fsutil dirty c query: the result is dirty, that is to say the drive will run another chkdsk on reboot.

checked around this forum to see if anyone had problems I had. I found suggestions to run start in selective startup of "clean".

I did a clean boot, expecting chkdsk. I waited through it and ran fsutil and got a bad result. I ran sfc and got a clean result.

    Hello

    1. is this problem limited to this user account?
    2. have you made changes on the computer recently?

    Method 1.
Let us first start the sfc scan and check if there are any file system corruption.
    a. to do this, click Start, click programs, accessories principally made, right click Guest and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.
    b. type the following command and press ENTER:

There is no Scandisk in XP. Do you mean that whenever you start your computer running chkdsk? If so, then:

It would be also a good idea to test your hard drive. Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from site of the disc mftr. or use SeaTools for BACK of Seagate. You create a bootable CD with the files you download. You will need a third party burning software to do as the free ImgBurn, Nero or Roxio. Burn as an image, not in the form of data.

  • After that chkdsk runs the system repair or install Clean is necessary

I had this problem a bit lately; This is what happens:

I do something like listening to music on a Flight Simulator, etc., and the system freezes - are not uncommon, so I leave to see if she'll take back.

When he is not take it back, I hit the reset button on my PC and this is where the problems occur:

CHKDSK begins its countdown and when it reaches zero, it passes through, find the system registry to be corrupted and then goes and deletes it.

From there on, I must go and repair Windows or sometimes even to perform a new installation.

The HARD drive I use is a sweet Samsung F1 1 TB of HARD drive.

The question that has also happened at the previous disk, a Samsung F1 750Go, it was damaged but somehow and if the Windows installation disk was not able to recognize all the partitions on the drive, was not able to create one of any size.

Is there a way I could avoid this? Or y at - it advice to reduce the appearance of this?

    original title: chkdsk ruining Vista

Here is a procedure I have found to stop the process (but you need to restart it again when finished to enable chkdsk to run when requested manually:http://www.ocmodshop.com/ocmodshop.aspx?a=874.)  Here is another article which basically says the same thing:http://www.internetfixes.com/question_of_the_week/IF01129.htm.

Here's another procedure, that I found which is a little different but was published by Rick Rogers MVP:

Something is causing to set the dirty bit. Open an elevated command
by typing CMD in the start/search box, and then right-click on the entry
on the start menu and use "run as Administrator". At the prompt, run
«chkntfs / of.» Then, close the command prompt and restart the system. As this command
Resets the drive, it should not run autochk at this stage. If so, then
something you have installed is causing the dirty bit set and you need
to look at what is running in the background.

I hope that one of the following procedures works for you.  Rememver, it won't stop that chkdsk to run when you restart.  It does not address the problem of why chkdsk removes the registry when executing (should not make tha unless there is a serious problem with system files or your drive hard at first - and maybe not yet).  Once this problem is solved, open a new thread to solve the other problem, if you want someone to look into it for you.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

You probably have a corrupt for error checking in the registry entry. A system restore point would probably fix this. If you want to watch the entrance to do, it's to:

"autocheck" entry (value) to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute

If you make a restore point and delete this value, you will probably fix it.
