Clean infected machines

We are middle bussiness of size in support of 400 machines over 20 locations. 25% of these machines are infected with malware of high-end (BIOS rootkits). Which product is the best to help us clean up these machines? What is the best method to use? Please give us a solution. Thank you

helpsp,

The best way to clean these machines is to format and reinstall the OS.

The second best way is to start by using a CD distribution based on Linux so that the HD is not Active, making it extremely difficult for the malware to hide.
Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 - all items

You should always run the malware or root detectors kit once the systems have been cleaned by Kaspersky. What follows is very convenient-
GMER
F-Secure Blacklight
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (must be installed every month via Windows Update)
Malwarebytes Anti-malware
Spybot Search Destroy & (excellent for cleaning of malware registry entries; not so excellent to provide Protection for the system)

The big question is, how these systems have been compromised in the first place ?
The OS must be kept up to date and so should every program or application.
Most of the compromises made today are via outdated software such as Adobe Flash/Reader, outdated and vulnerable Java runtimes, etc..

Systems must all be behind a router that contains a hardware firewall, then the native Windows Firewall.
Upgrade Internet Explorer IE8 even if it isn't the browser that is used.
If users prefer a Mozilla based browser, install the NoScript add on.

And, finally, to educate users on the download and installation of codecs video & audio when a web site invites, on the dangers of email attachments, software pirated and visit questionable sites that offer something that's too good to be true.

  • T30 slow performance - hard drive running constantly - you clean the machine

    Hello

I had to reinstall Windows XP from scratch some time ago.  In doing so, my system is now very slow (everything - loading programs, browsing, startup, etc.) even with no charge additional software other than Windows itself with all service packs and updates installed.  I reinstalled several times with the same result.  I have 384 MB of RAM and that you have defined a 512 MB Windows swap file.  The hard drive light is almost constantly on.  It's same with no antivirus software - if I load my machine becomes completely unusable.  I loaded all the latest drives using the Configuration of ThinkPad utility so I should be aware of the drivers.  IBM/Lenovo factory-loaded some specific software (management of the CPU, etc.), as I'm missing when I reinstalled?  I tried everything, but it works just like a dog.  Any ideas...?

    Thank you

    Gary

    Welcome to the forum!

384 of RAM is not enough to run XP correctly on your ThinkPad. I suggest upgrading at least 1 GB.

On other issues: you are using XP mode "classic"?

Also, is your CPU value "maximum performance" in the BIOS?

Good luck and let us know.

  • Sharing a connection with a possibly infected PC.

I have two computers, one of them may be infected.

If I use a hub to share the network connection (plug my modem cable to the hub and then connect each PC in this hub) and a KVM switch allows you to share external peripherals such as mouse, keyboard and monitor, will I have the own computer infected too?

I don't have a local network (actually I don't know exactly what is a LAN, but I guess that's something that needs to be put in place).

The own PC is a Vista, the other is an XP.

    Thanks for your help.

TI computers are connected and sharing of files, then it is possible that infection from spreading (and it seems that you only use the hub/switch by your internet connection, I need you to confirm that) NEVER move you files between two computers by any connection you set up - is that correct?   It seems relatively safe only share the internet connection (assuming that's it, that is - if you also share files between computers while the chances of infecting other computers are high).  The switch for the devices will not cause a problem.

You should get the infected computer cleaned as soon as possible to make sure it's not more difficult to solve, because the infection (or starting to cause serious problems).

  • Why the App tab disappears after the manhine with CCleaner cleaning?

I had App Tabs like yahoo, gmail, facebook, etc. But, after having cleaned my machine with CCleaner, I found, all of them disappeared. So, is it a current solution for this? CCleaner is a good software. Many users use it to clean their machine. So, what is the use of the App tab if we continue losing it after a lot of work to put them in the browser? Although I love firefox. Thank you.

Details of the tabs in the application are stored in the file that stores the session information. When using CCleaner make sure that you do not allow him to erase Firefox sessions.

You can disable hibernation if it is enabled and you do not...

When you Hibernate your computer, Windows saves the contents of the system memory in the hiberfil.sys file. As a result, the size of the hiberfil.sys file will always be equal to the amount of physical memory in your system. If you don't use the Hibernate feature and want to reclaim the space used by Windows for the hiberfil.sys file, perform the following steps:

-Start the Control Panel Power Options applet (go to start, settings, Control Panel, and then click Power Options).
-Select the Hibernate tab, uncheck "Activate the hibernation", and then click OK. Although you might think otherwise, selecting never under "Hibernate" option on the power management tab does not delete the hiberfil.sys file.

-Click on "Settings" and change the "amount of disk space to use: ' something between 64 MB and 128 MB. (There may be many more now.)
    -Click OK.
-Click on 'Delete files', then select "Delete all offline content" (the box), and then click OK. (If you had a LOT, it can take 2 to 10 minutes or more).
-Once it's done, click OK, close Internet Explorer, open Internet Explorer.

    Q

Start by installing the latest Service Pack (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791). You'll have so far fewere updtes to install.

Also note the following regarding your answer to the question of PA Bear "clean install has been through choice. After 3 years machine has become bloated and slow, and I decided to wipe them fresh, start over and give up unused programs that seemed a good idea at the time. » :

In my view, it is usually a mistake. With a minimum of care, it should never be necessary to reinstall Windows (Vista or any version). I ran Windows 3.0, 3.1, WFWG 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 now, each for the period of time before the next release is out and everyone on two or more machines here. I never reinstalled none of them (with one exception--a problem that I worked on for weeks without success), and I've never had anything more than an occasional minor problem.

It is my belief that this erroneous notion comes from the technical support people in most of the major OEMs. Their solution to almost any problem, for they know not quickly answer is "reformat and reinstall. It is the ideal solution for them. It gets you phone turned off quickly, it almost always works, and it does not need to do any real troubleshooting (a skill that most of them has obviously not in any great degree).

But it leaves you with all the work and all the problems. You must restore all backups of your data, you must reinstall all of your programs, you must reinstall all Windows and updates of the application, you must locate and install all the necessary drivers for your system, you will need to recustomize Windows and all your applications to work the way you are comfortable with.

In addition to all these things being long and painful, you may encounter difficulties with some of them: you will find all your CDs application? You will find all the necessary installation codes? You have data backups to restore? You still remember all the customizations and settings that can be installed to make everything work the way you like it? Sometimes there are problems that are so difficult to resolve that Windows has to be reinstalled properly. But they are few and far between; RESETTLEMENT should not be a substitute for troubleshooting; It should be a last resort, to do that once all other troubleshooting by qualified person attempts have failed.

And perhaps most important: If you reformat and reinstall without knowing what caused your problem, you will most likely repeat the behavior that caused it and quickly find yourself in exactly the same situation.

    HI Experts,

Off-host backup methods (like HDS ShadowImage, EMC BCVS, etc.) works in a Virtual Machine (if the volume to be backed up is created on RDM)?

This means that each such VM who have need to have backup off-host using ShadowImage have their LUNS dedicated (using RDM) and not on VMFS volumes.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    (VCP, NCDA, BCCFP, ASFS)

If you find this answer useful please consider giving points by checking the correct or helpful answer.

I'm not sure it's really a 'problem '.  If you take a snapshot of the side storage (BCV, NetApp snapshot, whatever) you're after a point-in-time backup.  The fact that changes to virtual RDM will make a delta file while the snapshot of the virtual machine exists doesn't make much difference insofar as what is in the snapshot storage - except that he has invited at least FS compliant (compatible app is another debate).  You always have a snapshot of time point, and it is always the data that exist when you trigger the process.

So, with virtual mode, you can use instant VMware (using RAS as VMware tools are installed) and get a consistent snapshot of comments-FS.

Physical RDM mode, it's tools, usually from the storage provider, in the prompt flush/being suspended.  NetApp SnapDrive one is an example of this.  SnapDrive one uses the same win32 calls to rinse the NTFS.  You can put SnapManager for Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, in addition to this, and now you're app - are as well.

You can make snapshots of storage of data a VMFS or NFS warehouses.  You would need a script or a tool to clean virtual machines.  There is an example of a very simple script in NetApp TR3428 (http://www.netapp.com/us/library/technical-reports/tr-3428.html), or if you actually NetApp, you can use IVMS (http://www.netapp.com/us/library/technical-reports/tr-3737.html).  These scripts don't rinse apps by themselves, but depending on the application, you can incorporate pre/post scripts in the virtual machine.

    Enjoy!

At the beginning it was not too bad, but now, if I open Firefox with ANY web browser and then simply click on the window of the browser search I had up to nine windows or tabs pop up. It sounds as if your system is not clean. You could:

    Without launching Firefox:
