I want to import photos by reference rather than copy them, but nothing seems to work for me. I tried to import the files as. JPEG and. PNG formats without success so far. Each photo is ~ 3565 KB in size.

  I searched the forum for this particular error, but most of the comments had to do with the PDFs and they do not apply to my situation (I even changed the printer to Adobe PDF format until I started to import the files without any significant improvement).

  Also, the error message you get indicates either that the graphic filter is having problems with the file, or less likely, that it runs out of RAM and free hard disk space.

  If you want, you could zip one of your first jpg images and a re-recorded and include it with your message for some of us to look at...
