  Just looking at the cover, it's an image full screen inside a PDF file. The text is not crispy even at 100%, and if I pinch and zoom on the page text is not resolved in a high quality version. It is the same for each page ad. It is not until I get to the editorial line where I see really no vector content.

  Pages that are full pages of images and then converted to PDF articles are why you are having memory problems. I don't know what is your production process, but for these items, it is best to define these items to be in PNG instead of PDF format (you can mix the two types of article within the same folio).

  I just upgraded to iOS 8.something 9.3.1, and in the new music application, the list of songs is tinted to match the color of the album art, which makes it very difficult to read the list of songs if primary color of the album is tonic. Any ideas how to do that "feature" so I can just have the list of pieces in black and white?

  You can not disable it, but you can improve readability by making adjustments in settings > general > accessibility.
