  I will soon be reinstall Windows XP Professional on my laptop Compaq nx7400.  I already downloaded the drivers from HP support, but I need to know in what order they must be installed.  I'm especially afraid the buttons outside the laptop will no longer work after the installation.

  You should always install chipset driver as first reboot. It is the most important rule.

  I usually install a second Intel Matrix Storage Managerdriver on models with your chipset.

  After that, you can install graphic driver to continue the installation process in more comfortable conditions.

  The next thing you need to know is that before you are going to install the audio driver, you must install the first "Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio".

  You do not have to worry about buttons nee. Install HP Quick Launch Buttons, correct the driver wireless, Bluetooth (if you have one) driver and HP wireless Assistant. When you do this all buttons should work without any problems.

  Note:

  HP Wireless Assistant will help you monitor the status of wireless devices.

  CL; earing the password depends on if your friend set security all in the BIOS.  If it did not, so everything should be pretty simple. If he did, the systemboard will be replaced.

  The following quote is from the maintenance & service guide for your laptop.

  "1.2 resetting the computer if the computer you are performing maintenance has an unknown password, follow these steps to reset the password."

  These steps also clear CMOS. ✎The following steps will not erase a unknown password if the rigorous security option has been enabled in the BIOS.

  So stringent security are enabled, the system board needs to be replaced to reset an unknown password.

  See section 5.21, "System Board" for more information on replacing the system board.

  Before replacing the motherboard, follow these steps to ensure tight security has been properly activated.

  Activation of rigorous security offers better protection for the turning on and password administrator password and other forms of authorization of power.

  Rigorous security are enabled/disabled by accessing the password Options menu in the computer Setup utility.

  See Section 2.1, "Start the computer installation" for more information.

  I fear that you will not be able to circumvent or remove unknown BIOS password
  Of course, the BIOS password could be deleted on the desktop computer by removing the battery BIOS, but the laptop technology is simply different and this procedure won't help
  You will need to contact the ASP in your country which is able to do.

  Unfortunately, business machines have a stricter security consumption patterns - they do not produce "stop codes", the password cannot be derived from the serial number and the code is stored in a nonvolatile memory to remove the RTC cell does not reset the password in this case.

  If you Contact HP Business support they should be able to send you a file custom SMC.bin that you can use to reset the password at startup.

  One of our HP Compaq 6910 has a power on password set, I'm guessing a student thought it would be fun to implement. I can't anything at all on the laptop without the password, is there a way to reset? These laptops are older and certainly not under warranty.

  It was created by a student, I found the battery cmos finally after disassemble the laptop, was able to short the pins and reset the bios password.
