  • Compaq Presario C700 stops frequently

    I have Compaq Presario C700. There: 1.73 GHz Pentium Dual-Core Mobile Processor T2370, up to 2 GB DDR2,

    Recently, I noticed that the laptop stops frequently when I'm listening to music, watching movies, or sometimes when you work. I did some research on the problem and I found that most people say find the manual on COMPAQ.com and watch the plug in order to open the laptop, then spray/clean fans / or heating of the parts. Is it the right thing to do.

    Several times a laptop overheating is directly related to the cooling of the processor. The main culprit is the fan. The fan draws in air from the bottom and it blows on the side. It will also suck in the hair, dust and other debris. Often this kind of thing is trapped by the heat sink and the wire time accumulates in a layer that stifles the cool air, go to the processor, making the fan to redouble their efforts.

    Read this:

    http://support.HP.com/us-en/document/c01657439

    What I recommend is to take a canned air and blow out vents in the side and the underside of the laptop. If after that you still have overheating problems and your laptop is under warranty, you can take your laptop to an authorized Service Center HP and ask them to clean the fan and the heat sink. You can check your warranty here:

    http://www13.itrc.HP.com/service/ewarranty/warrantyResults.do?admit=109447627+1286541891570+28353475

    If it is out of warranty, consider looking for the service manual for your specific model, in the manual it is patterns to disassemble the laptop. It is much easier that remove a motherboard, so don't feel intimidated by the idea of clean the fan. Also you can remove the heat sink and then remove the thermal grease and apply a new layer, which also helps reduce heat related issues.

  • Safari restarts immediately after you stop smoking, or to quit the Force

    I have a problem whereby Safari restarts immediately whenever I quit the app, either through the command-Q or via force quit. I can always restart my laptop when it's market (and Safari does not immediately restart after restart), but sometimes I want to close Safari to remove distractions or save battery. I disabled all Extensions of Safari, but that did not fix the problem.

    An additional bit of weird behavior, it is that once Safari restarts after resigning, the browser window is hidden until I Alt - Tab to Safari.

    I heard that the SIMBL plugins can cause this happens. The only thing I've had has SafariStand, that I uninstalled it a long time ago (and I see all the entries of SIMBL in the Application Support folder or in the activity monitor).

    I use Safari 9.0.2 in El Capitan 10.11.2 on a Late-2008 aluminium MacBook (5.1) with a self installed 240 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Happy to share the newspapers/screenshots. Thank you!

    Please read this message before doing anything.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It is unlikely to solve your problem. Don't be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    The test is intended to determine if the problem is caused by a third-party software that loads automatically at startup or logon, by a device, by a police conflict or corruption of system files or some system caches.

    Disconnect all devices wired except those required to test and remove all the expansion cards from secondary market, as appropriate. Start in safe mode and log on to the account of the problem.

    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or an earlier version, or if a firmware password is defined, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can not do this. Ask for additional instructions.

    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run as normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things work at all, including an audio output and a Wi - Fi connection on some models. The next normal boot can also be a bit slow.

    The login screen is displayed even if you usually connect automatically. You need your password to log on. If you have forgotten the password, you will have to reset it before you begin.

    Test in safe mode. Same problem?

    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and make sure you always have the problem. View the results of the test.

  • Compaq Presario SR2010NX beep code error starting: longbeeppausecontinuinglongbeepspausebetweeneach

    Hello.  My Compaq Presario Desktop PC SR2010NX of 2006 began just not start.  It gives me a sound code of long beeps that accompany pause after each beep and continue indefinitely.  I have tried convenience cheques, and it looks as if it was the 'memory '.  My question, FEI's memory, what cards are hardware compatible with my PC.  I had a breakdown.    to install a new set of 2 GB cards in July - and I had technicians immediately reinstall my old 2 cards (issued factory) replacement cards they have advised me to buy are not compatible, and when I went to pick up my computer, the computer would not start.  I have askede to reinstall my old cards and the computer booted suceesfully, and I left the store!  I am sure that I do not know what new products could be compatible with my old PC.  I thhink 4 GB is too myuch for my computer, and he couldn't get half that - but what brand should be like new hardwrae?  I wasn't expecting my old cards fail when they were resettled - three months since the change of memory attempt - thre months they started normally.  They have been re-hurriedly harnessed and dismissed the case, and then I left the store.  (The tech threatedned me with fear of "motherboard failure", which just made get the computer and leave immediately.  The old cards cannot have been relocated safely.  I'm taking it - but I will not be pushed around.  Of course - as old as mine PC would gradually motherboard failure.  Until it fails.  It was the memory card, but what woud cards my PC take that would be accepted as new hardware and allow my PC to boot up normally, if it is the cards and not yet the motherboard?

    I have now read the post with indicator on the upgrade memory.  It was very useful, and I wrote notes for the Presario.

    It says, maximusmis 2 GB to 1 GB cards/no stamped with the form of the data of motherboard page.

    It is divided between 2 cards 512 MB factory.  It has only 2 slots.

    Thank you.  My Compaq desktop computer has grown on me.  I got Vista bfore and I didn't know what I think.  If it can be repaired, I think 8 years (purchase date 4 November 2006) were fun for the low-end model.  It was a good choice, and I have never regretted buying at what cost.  It was better than expected.

    I haven't used my Compaq Presario continually over the past eight years - that's why it lasted so long!  Dud ut do work, however.  I had retirement is put online last year

    I liked HP Photosmart first 6.5 photo editing.  I liked Wordpad.  Mechanically, it was scientifically.  The material began to go when the built-in CD/DVD internal drive has failed.  I bought and had a replacement (DVD player (cd) internal HP) installed in July 2014.

    The new internal DVD writer HP compatible service pack XP? I have SP2) - I don't think it's about compatible new material.  This caused unable to start new businesses after three months?  New feature of device recognistion and old motherboard? Don't know?  (short circuit)?  I left the old CD/DVD recorder factory in its case - it's there and the springs are working to open and close the casing and check it / A short?  Don't know anything about electric

    Another point, when the original memory card 512 MB on factory 2 cards have been resettled, he was press-technicians to get the computer to boot - so the computer's case has been closed.   (I took the PC on their part awqay as fast it was closed upward).  I thought safe in maintaining clips?  Maybe not securely harnessed.  Could also be from the old factory of 512 memory cards in each clip spare wedge - to alternate which card and which support clip.  I have not tried this or re-cutting to the place of repair.  (I do not have any technical installation and not have ny contact danger here - I do not touch the computer).  It is the matter of repair - these people in a hurry, they sell - they tell you something will work, they overtest, they overdiagnose - they push you autour-yyou never recover your computer to use as is - it is disturbing to go, if you are not a consumer savvy or technical.

    May not be able to take new material old = change motherboard in chipsets, etcs. features.

    Ialso had an error saying years only. IPC Port would not work.  (. COMI is the base model for the CPA called Palm Zire Hotsync Manager.  I don't think the Palm Zire software uninstalled iI, and the message is a (!) origin unknown error message is:. COMI, has failed to initialize.  It's a pop-up error message appeared during the startup process.  The repair people off the message.  The boot has been at once - disconnect - the plugin twice and electric start.  It was based on the plug in the socket, removed and reconnected before the start =.  Technicians tried to solve this problem, but it is not important from my point of view.  All of those, cumulatively, could be symptoms of a hardware change progressive until the end of the use of PC - they are all could be chips card mother falling out or something there (the CD player, the.) Port COMI - don't know about the real, even if start program - which can only be that.)

    I tried the power reset function discussed in the Troubleshooting Online Web pages - 5 seconds to reset, / 15 seconds to reset - power off (unplugged) and hold the power button / stop without plug-in for 5 or 15 seconds (depends on the Web page of the online manual!)  Once, after an attempt to reset of fifteen seconds, the computer has no beep, and he almost made a second rumble noise - but then no change afterwards.  The redonnee start-up sound code beep after that the computer was turned off and then restarted again.

    PC is sitting in his corner.  I don't want someone break while I think about what to do.  He's going nowhere right now.

    This is the first time, it would not start.  I am a bit worried and disappointed, but, I know that my PC is old, and one day, it will fail to work.  That is the reality.  If it fi fixable, I'm interested to hear about the fit-it.  Thanks again.

    Hello @lliil,

    I read what you posted and it seems that you have a hardware problem with your computer. The only thing I can do for you is to provide you with the HP support document: BIOS Beep Codes, which will help you to correctly identify what's wrong with your computer. Given the age of the computer apart from this if you want to know if it can be fixed, I recommend do you get into a local computer repair shop and let them take a look.

    I hope I helped. Thanks for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Compaq Presario SR5130NX: Cannot start Windows Vista after failure - HELP!

    Hello! My building has undergone a complete failure so 4 days ago I used it. Power resumed 3 hours later, but I was not able to log on since.

    Normally, I turn on my PC, and about 30 seconds later, a window pops up asking you my password. After entering it, the PC come by my office. Now, when I turn on the PC, it brings me to a blue screen with a mouse cursor in the Center (which I can move), but there is nothing to click on.

    When I press F8 during the boot process and choose an option from the window "Advanced Boot Options", I still can't start my computer normally.

    Here's the "Advanced Boot Options" I tried, after consultation with my brother a little more PC-savvy:

    1 repair your computer - after I see my black screen that is usual with the words "Microsoft Corporation" under the green bars that scroll from left to right for about 15 seconds, a blue screen appears with the mouse pointer in the Center (which I can move), but there is nothing to click on.

    2 mode safe - while the PC display several files on start up and down, it stops on "Loaded: \windows\system32\drivers\disk.sys" for about 20 seconds, then proceeds to a black screen with the words "Safe Mode" in the 4 corners and the mouse cursor at the Center (which I can move), but there is nothing to click on.

    3 safe mode with network - see "Safe Mode" above.

    4 safe mode with command prompt - see 'Safe Mode' above.

    5 last known good Configuration (Advanced) - see "repair your computer" above.

    6 start Windows normally - see "Repair your computer" above.

    7 debug mode - see "Repair your computer" above.

    I downloaded a DVD recovery based on Linux in knopper.net, allowing me to access important files, which I copied from the desktop to an external hard drive (4.1 GB iso file).

    PC Windows XP of my brother has a recovery disk, but my Windows Vista PC did not come with one. I've seen a few paid versions, but looked resources due to cool weather and free shipping.

    I can't tell if I have the 23-bit or the 64 bit version of Windows Vista, so I downloaded both versions of an open source sourceforge.NET startup repair, which I burned on 2 DVDs. After you run the startup repair program using two DVD, the diagnostic results have been uploaded online at ubuntu.com for review and technical analysis. Here are the links:

    http://Paste.Ubuntu.com/16019372/

    The last report ended with the words "start managed to fix...".  You can now restart your computer. "But I always encounter a blank screen (black or blue) when I try to log on to my PC.

    Hello

    Since you already have KNOPPIX I try Gparted and use it to 'clean up' the score because it will stop in an impure State.

    NTFS

    [1][11]NTFS-3 g / important

    GParted will try.

    Also, I would consider the old problem with fat systems, floppy disks etc. which sometimes a copy of sys files from a floppy disk to a hard drive has reactivated a bootable system.

    So, if system files have been damaged, then replace them since a Setup disk.  Because he goes to options, what kind of work.

    My daughter has a CQ60 notebook that was working fine this morning, but this afternoon the Q W E R U I O and P keys have stopped responding. I could check, all other keys are not affected. Any suggestion would be gratly appreciated.

    Before I / we assume that the keyboard is bad you need to reinstall the driver, that seems to never work, but we should give it a shot anyway. Go to the control panel and find the Device Manager. Click on that and find "Keyboard" in the list, click the small arrow to decompress. Right-click on the keyboard and choose to uninstall the driver, ignore the warning and continue. You will be prompted to restart the computer and start it will automatically reinstall the driver.

    Here is your service manual and a few videos in the media library of the HP Services.

    http://h10032.www1.HP.com/CTG/manual/c02985882.PDF  Look on page 4-18 and a bit beyond. Be very careful when you remove the cable from the ZIF connector on the motherboard, if you break that he condemns the whole motherboard.

    http://h20574.www2.HP.com/default.htm?lang=en&cc=us&hpappid=psml  If you have difficulties to navigation in your model and videos, post again and I'll give you some instructions. Give the page time video too load. Yours is very easy to remove, there are 3 screws marked with a symbol inside the battery bay keyboard that hold it in place and it throws just to go to the nearest rear of the screen.

    Once, you get to the video page, navigate to the keyboard in the left column.

    Note that it does not list the CQ60-200 series, but the 100 series is the same.

    You can also order the keyboard of HP once, you know the part number, it will be at the back of the keyboard ending with

    -001.  You will pay bonus for it through HP and you will not be able to order the parts anyway, I discovered that it is only available in the United States, it is perhaps different in the United Kingdom.

  • Compaq Presario CQ71-320SA: failure of the update of the BIOS via Support Assistant / should I update anyway?

    This morning I found that my laptop had not finished closing 8 hours ago. I stopped by pressing the button Off for 6 seconds and restarted. I then looked a likely cause and saw that a BIOS problem was probably the cause.

    I'm went to the site of HP support & with information about http://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c00007682, I followed step 1 and I saw that my BIOS is F.11 21/08/2009.

    Support site told me that I need F.11Rev1/20/10/2014. I installed, rebooted and saw that he had failed.

    What's worse, is that the program Insyde update it says that the 2009 version is updated - see below.

    Hello

    You can manually update the BIOS for your laptop by downloading from the link below:

    The current version available is F.23

    http://ftp.HP.com/pub/SoftPaq/sp51501-52000/sp51527.exe

    Once the download is complete, double-click the downloaded file and follow the instructions on the screen.

    You will notice may-continuous display blank for a few seconds, which is quite normal. Once the update is actually the device automatically restarts.

    Note to back up your data before performing the update. Also have your adapter connected to the laptop.

    If you have hard to turn it off, and it stops working:

    Restore point:

    Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

    Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

    Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If the above does not work, try to make a Bootable ERD to do a Startup Repair:
    As is the case with most computers/laptops these days, they do not come with good Vista disc to repair only the recovery disks.
    As your grave in the category above, download the ISO on the provided link and do a repair of the disc.
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
    When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.
    You can make a tool to restart system, System Restore, etc. with it.
    Read all the info on the website on how to create and use it.
    I have a "compaq presario v6210US', which worked great for a while, then it just stops and restarted and the screen remained black. Now it keeps restarting itself, but the screen remains blakc. I can hear the fan and hard drive and any other works the way it's supposed to. I've heard tell that this has happened to a bunch of other people then it sounds like a defect to me. How do fix or do I just remove the hard drive, launch the Presario and get a mobile phone competitors?
    Hello @Sachmo499 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    I understand your laptop keeps restarting and shows a black screen.
    Here is a great place to start the troubleshooting of starting on a laptop:
    Computer does not start and the lights blink or the computer will beep.
    Troubleshooting of the black screens with no start-up or start-up error message.
    Tests of hardware failures (Windows 7, Vista) or hardware failures (Windows 8).
    If you want laptop startup problems or black screen, regardless of the brand, you will find this number in the world. Currently, there is no recall for this product.
    If you have the laptop repaired I would say asking HP telephone support options service/repair. You can contact HP Technical Support at 1-800-474-6836 in North America. For all other regions click here.
    If you want to remove the HARD drive and connect it to another computer to back up your information, you can follow this guide: PC portable Compaq Presario V6000.
    I several times installed upgrading after the blue screen event ever.  The download is an application called V8.9.2.1002_logo_Win7Vista3264.exe.
    The Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver is not in the list of devices in Device Manager > show hidden devices.  I found information on the HP site indicating how do I know if my computer has the driver, because I thought that maybe it has not been installed correctly.  I found the Intel Matrix Storage Manager program folder in the start menu > new programs.  I can't know what version it is.  Reading tells Me to text file in the folder to open the Device Manager and search for specific controllers SATA RAID and SATA AHCI controllers.  If not in the list then it appears that my OS is not running in two modes.  I can't find these devices in the list, but the Read Me text file advises me to contact the manufacturer in case of doubt.  My warranty has expired, so I'm here asking for help.
    When I use the HP product detection analysis to try to automatically scan for driver updates, it reads my product incorrectly.   Running the tool has sometimes followed by a crash and blue screen.
    I do not remember the changes that I made at the time when the events of the blue screen started to happen.  There was an event yesterday blue screen and the message on the desk said a problem with the HP Recovery Manager and backup.   He advised me to install an update from the HP website.  The link did not open so I downloaded the version 4.0.100.1189sp39296.exe of HP update.  I've also updated my graphics driver.
    I would be grateful if someone could help me solve this problem.   I'm worried about damaging my computer.
    Hello:
    First of all your needs from laptop to have the hardware (CPU and chipset) Intel to run the Intel Matrix Storage Manager.
    Your C700 CTO may have either hardware Intel or an AMD/Nvidia chipset so I can't tell you what your laptop has.
    You can tell however, and you can tell what mode of the controller to your PC is currently running (AHCI or RAID).
    If you have PC, go into the Device Manager and if you have a category of an ATA/ATAPI IDE controller based on an Intel processor, click to expand that and if your laptop is running in AHCI mode, the controller will have the AHCI word in the description of the controller.
    If your mobile phone is set to RAID (which I doubt), scroll down further on the Device Manager list, and there would be a category of storage controllers if the command is set to RAID.
    Click to expand, and you would see a description of disk with the word inside RAID controller.
  • Atheros AR5007 802. 11 b / g adapter on Compaq Presario A931NR + basic router F7D1301 Belkin v1 (01)
    Hello Support Forum
    Problem with Atheros AR5007 802. 11 b / g adapter on Compaq Vista laptop
    Compaq Presario A931NR + basic router F7D1301 Belkin v1 (01)
    Belkin told me that I should update my Atheros card driver to use WPA/WPA2.  I can only use WEP with the factory installed Atheros AR5007 802.11.b/g WiFi adapter.  Device Manager reports that the driver software for your device is updated.
    Atheros AR5007 802.11.b/g WiFi adapter
    Driver provider: Atheros Communications Inc.
    Driver version: 7.3.201.25
    Driver date: 30/05/2007
    File version: 7.3.1.25 built by WinDDK
    Could there be an update for my Atheros AR5007 802. 11 b / g adapter
    All the answers most welcome
    Hello:
    Let's take it from the top...
    I know for a fact that you can get your wireless card to work with your Belkin router. sm09 and others were able to get the same card to work on them.  I have every confidence that you can too.
    No more than I do (other than you perhaps), wants you to be able to connect to the internet as you had planned to in the first place.
    The devil is in the details.
    Here's what I recommend...
    1. Download this driver and remember where you saved it. Do not install it immediately.
    http://h10025.www1.HP.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-99392-1&cc=us&DLC=en&LC=en
    2. go to your network and sharing Center and disconnect your current wireless connection.
    3. go to your device manager, click on the section of the network adapters, and then right-click on your Atheros wireless network adapter.
    4. Select uninstall and then if there is a box to check who says unistall drivers, check this box.
    5 reboot the laptop.
    a. it will detect the card wireless again and can install drivers.  If she did install the drivers, please return to this Atheros device in Device Manager and click on the driver tab, check the driver version and date.
    b. If it is 9.2.0.444 some time in 2011, and then the driver you need to get your adapter to work has been installed.
    c. If the driver is another (earlier) date/version, now, install the file you downloaded previously. After installation, go back and check that the 9.2.0.444 version is now installed. He must have
    6. If the wireless card it does not install when you restart the laptop, now to install the file you downloaded above and check once more to make sure that version 9.2.0.444 is installed.
    7. return to your network and sharing Center and set up your wireless connection as you hear it.  WPA2-Personal - AES.
    8. cross your fingers...
    Stop 0 x 124 is a hardware error
    If you are overclocking try to reset your settings to standard processor and see if that helps.
    If you keep getting the BSOD here are things more than you may want.
    This is usually hardware related, defective heat, memory or processor even if it is "possible" he is associated (rare) driver.
    Stop 0 x 124 - what it means and what to try
    Synopsis:
    A "stop 0 x 124" is fundamentally different from many other types of bluescreens because it arises from a complaint of material.
    Stop 0 x 124 minidumps contain very little concrete information, and it is therefore necessary to address the problem as a case of material in an unknown state of distress.
    Generic troubleshooting ' Stop 0 x 124 ":
    1) to ensure that none of the hardware components are overclocked. Material which is pushed beyond its design specifications - by overclocking - may malfunction in unpredictable ways.
    (2) ensure that the machine is sufficiently cooled.
    If there is doubt, open the side of the case (be aware of all the relevant conditions guaranteed!) PC and direct an electric fan squarely to the motherboard. Who will rule on most cooling problems (lack of).
    3) update all drivers related to materials: video, sound, RAID (if applicable), NIC... anything that interacts with a piece of hardware.
    It is best to run the latest drivers anyway.
    (4) update the BIOS of your motherboard according to the manufacturer's instructions.
    Their website should provide detailed instructions on the brand and model-specific procedure.
    (5) rarely, bugs in the operating system may cause "false positives" 0 x 124 events where the hardware wasn't complaining, but Windows thought otherwise (because of the bug).
    At the time of writing, Windows 7 does not have to suffer from a defect, but it is nevertheless important to keep Windows up-to-date.
    6) trying (stress) test these hardware components that can be put to the test artificially.
    The most obvious examples are the RAM and HDD (s).
    For the RAM, use diagnostics from built-in memory (run MDSCHED) or the utility memtest86 3rd - party to run plenty of evidence of hours of testing.
    For hard drives, verify if CHKDSK /R finds any problems on (s), including "bad sectors".
    Unreliable RAM, in particular, is mortal, as well as software, and anything other than a 100% clear memory test result is cause for concern. Unfortunately, even a 100% clear result the diagnostic utilities does not guarantee that the RAM is free of any defect - only that none have been encountered during the test passes.
    7) as the last of the non-invasive troubleshooting steps, perform a "Vanilla" Windows reinstallation: just the OS itself without additional applications, games, utilities, updates, new drivers - or ANYTHING that does not come from the Windows 7 disc.
    Who stops working mitigate the problem of the 0 x 124, jump to the next step.
    If you run the "Vanilla" installation long enough to convince yourself that not a single 0 x 124 accident occurred, start installing applications and updates slowly, always stopping between successive additions long enough to get an idea of the question if the machine is still free of 0 x 124 breaks down.
    Smash back, obviously the latest addition of software may be somehow connected to the root cause.
    If the stop error 0 x 124 persist despite the above steps, and the equipment is under warranty, consider to go back and ask for a replacement that does not suffer periodic MCE events.
    Be aware that want to perform the subsequent hardware troubleshooting steps can, in some cases, void your warranty:
    (8) clean and carefully remove the dust inside the machine.
    Reinstall all memory modules and connectors.
    Use a can of compressed air to clean the RAM DIMM supports as much as possible.
    (9) If all else fails, start removing items of hardware one by one in the hope that the culprit is something non-essential that can be eliminated.
    Obviously, this type of testing is much easier if you have access to equivalent components in order to perform swaps.
    If you are in the situation to have completed all the steps above without a resolution of the symptom, unfortunately the most likely reason is that the error message is literally correct - something is fundamentally wrong with the hardware of the machine.
  • Compaq Presario S4500UK won't start after disconnecting from the wall outlet. What is a CMOS battery problem?
    Reconstruction of recent software with HARD drive internal extra (March 2011) under Windows XP/Linux dual-boot installation worked fine.  CD/DVD RW drive, started giving errors so replaced cyclic redundancy check drive a week ago.  All still OK.  Change of electricity supplied and increases energy use conciousness off the machine to the outlet of the overnight after normal shut down.  Machine will not re-start not in the morning.  Not load BIOS; all lights came briefly and then die after 3-4 seconds with power still led on.  You can get a similar effect by plugging the keyboard into the PS2 Mouse Jack I did once!
    After 20 minutes or so try all kinds of things managed to boot from the CD of Linux.  Shut down/restarted and everything is fine so I don't switch off at the wall.  Also seems to be OK after brief power off for 5-10 seconds but the problem persists with any long disconnection.  It seems that after 10 to 15 minutes from power-on and 2-3 attempts to restart, BIOS comes up and all is well, but he stopped in the middle of a start of Windows or Linux on a couple of occasions.
    Am I right in thinking the problem might be the result of a dead CMOS battery?  The reason that I ask is that the clock seems to keep time OK and there is no apparent problem with the BIOS once it loads.
    Any help/advice would be much appreciated.  New config info below.
    I don't have all the answers so I went forward with replacing the CMOS battery, but that did not help.  The problem is also obvious if I turn it off and leave it for an hour or more before trying to restart even if I do not unplug the wall plug.  It seems to take about 15-20 will start again before it fires.  I would be really grateful for any clues as to what is wrong.
    OK, guys.  I finally solved the problem.
    After you have calculated the power needed for the config curent, I discovered that, using various ways to estimate, he walked between 321W - 383W.  It was pretty weird that the only thing I added was a HARD drive and a memory stick and the wisdom of the other guys on this forum, it's that there is a lot of capacity within the factory installed power of 250W.  Yes and here's the rub: the modern replacement devices usually have upgraded capabilities and use more power.  And so when I replaced the drive CD/DVD RW added a few watts, as the sectoral approach of the floppy drive.  It appears also that the optical USB mouse needs more juice than the good old PS2.
    I just installed a new 450W PSU Powercool and Bingo!  The processor is faster, too.
    Hope that my pain and trauma saves someone else having to suffer the same.
