Computer is slow, 39, ongoing process
Original title: Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 3
I 39 processes running in Windows Task Manager, and essential activity is files .exe, in fact, 37 of the 39 process are .exe files, the other 2 are system and the system idle process. Why are there so many executable files running? My computer does not work smoothly, and I think that it is for this reason.
Two reasons the most common computers run slowly is high CPU usage and a lot of hard drive activity.
Look at your "system idle process" - it displays all the time unused CPU you have. If the number is high, then you are not bound to the CPU.
Disk access can also slow down your machine. Check the led access to your drive on your computer. If you don't have enough RAM in your system, then operational memory tends to overflow into the virtual memory that will make your drive to be almost constantly in use and will definitely slow down your machine. Too many programs running at the same time can cause this problem.
You can use a program like "Autoruns" to view the programs that start with your system and you can prevent any departure by unchecking the. Download and run the program, then click on the 'Startup' tab to view the list.

Is the another great category why my computer is slow?
I get a lot of beach and the General slow balls spinning this month.
One thing I checked last week my storage status. 237 free GB to 999 GB and 618 for which is the category "other"! I hate this wave "other" category. Here is a screenshot.
You can see that I have barely keep anything on my internal drive. I don't have a lot of applications. The ones I use regularly is Mail, Safari, Lightroom and Photoshop.
A few years ago I learned about a procedure in disk utility to completely erase the disk space, but when I went to do, I couldn't find more, as El Capitan got rid of him. Is there something similar I can do?
Is this large amount of yellow on the bar as alarming as it looks and probably why my computer is slow?
Thank you!
p.s. in another thread, I will post about a glitch that happens with my trash. Maybe it's related.
The function of Secure Erase of Trash was removed to El Capitan. One of the reasons was that it worked as expected. The other is that it reduces the life expectancy of the SSD.
I would suggest your download and install OmniDiskSweeper. When you rum ODS, it will tell you the names of the files and folders that use the most space. You can then decide for yourself or ask us what can be detected or moved.
The first step in the process must be a full backup of everything.

Windows XP computer is slow to start and stop.
original title: PC is VERY slowIt takes awhile to start and turns off, surfing is quite slow as well. How do I speed it up?
Some reasons for the slow pace of the computer:
1. computer has not been maintained - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Maintenance
2. the computer is infected with the malware - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware
3. the disk is too full. Remove useless stuff, uninstall unused programs. Do not forget to save!
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Backing_Up4. flaky third party software. Toolbars and modules are particularly guilty in this area. Uninstall toolbars (Google, Yahoo, ISP brand, etc) and look at what modules are in use in your browser (s).
5. computer has too many unnecessary programs/processes running in the background. Manage your Startup:
For XP - How to troubleshoot using the Msconfig in Windows XP utility - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310560
The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspxFor Vista/Windows7 - Start Orb > Search box > type: msconfig and when it appears in the results area above, right-click and choose 'run as administrator '. Autoruns is also very useful.
6. the user runs an inflated/invasive such as Norton and McAfee antivirus program. Replace it with a better program. I recommend NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (free). Avira is also good, but the free version has an unpleasant reminder screen (Google for instructions on how to disable it). The user can also run several real-time antivirus/firewall/security programs.
7. the user has installed new programs that are processor and/or memory-intensive (Photoshop, AutoCAD, Mathmatica or similar) and does not have the power of the equipment.
8 drive fails and is in PIO Mode (IDE only - not applicable for disks SATA drives). It's very much slow (like being in 1985). See Hans-Georg Michna here information -http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10
If the hotfix registry PIO only 'glue' (or you have a SATA drive), the drive is probably faulty and needs to be tested.
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_TshootIn addition to the above, see also http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/help-my-computer-is-slow.html
Note: If the computer has always been slow, in addition to the above user may have bought a machine with a less powerful processor and not enough RAM (memory). The normal use of the computer, 512 MB to 1 GB is sufficient for XP; Vista should have a minimum of 2 GB; Windows 7 is less demanding than Vista, but the minimum of 2 GB should also be used.
MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic! -
Hello: My question is not uncommon, I hope there is a simple solution. My computer has slowed down over a period of time and want to get the speed. I have tried Microsoft downloads (my computer would not accept them), System Tools, disk cleanup and defragmentation, bought "Fixcleaner" to aid, etc.. Nothing seems to speed it up. Simple suggestions for a non-expert user?
Simple? Probably not. In addition, programs such as Fixcleaner and Advanced SystemCare 4 are almost always doomed to failure in cases like yours. However, it shouldn't be so hard to speed up your PC.
Do you have XP Home, XP Pro or XP MCE?
What is the brand and model of your PC?
What is the status of malware from your PC?
What security programs are you running? (For example, Norton or McAfee?)
You all post-SP3 installed security update?
How much RAM do you have?
What is your hard drive and the amount of free space is left on it?
If you need help answering these questions, let know us.
Here are the usual causes of slow:
1. malware (malware). You need to rule out first! This page has excellent information:
2. some programs aimed at combating malware (for example, Norton and McAfee). Ironically, they can slow things down because they use simply much too many resources. Sometimes they cause conflicts with other programs. And their default mode is to scan your entire hard drive whenever you start. Fortunately, there are other programs of anti-malware software available that use much less resources (p. ex., NOD32, Avast and Avira).
3. too much of certain types of programs still running in background - with or without your consent. (Then again, a lot of programs running in the background of the consequences trivial.)
To determine each program and process, you are running, use the task (Ctrl + Alt + Delete) Manager and click the processes tab. You should be able to sort by CPU usage or memory usage for a good ideas that are resource/memory hogs. You must write the names of all the processes for future detective work (or take a snapshot and print it).
Use these sites to determine what these programs are, and learn how configure them to not always run when starting:
http://www.PACS-portal.co.UK/startup_content.php#THE_PROGRAMS
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
http://www.AnswersThatWork.com/Tasklist_pages/Tasklist.htmSometimes, it is recommended to use msconfig to configure programs to run at startup. A better, more thorough program is Autoruns:
http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
But before that, you must use the settings preference of the program in question. Otherwise, for some programs, they will return to the list of startup anyway!
If you do not want to use msconfig, it can be accessed in this way:
Start | Run | Type "msconfig" (without the quotes). Enter (or OK)
4. not enough RAM, causing the PC too rely on the pagefile. A quick way to determine if what is happening is to open (Ctrl + Alt + Delete) Task Manager, and then click the performance tab. Then the three values under Commit Charge (k) Note: in the lower left corner: Total, limit and peak.
The Total number represents the amount of memory you are using right now. The vertex figure represents the maximum amount of memory you made since the last boot. If these figures are lower than the value of the amount of physical memory (K), then you probably have lots of RAM. In case you want to study it more, you can run the Page queue Monitor for Windows XP:
http://www.dougknox.com/XP/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm
5. you can also verify that the access mode of your hard drive has not changed from DMA to PIO:

I have windows vista 64 bit, which worked well until the last windows update and now wait for 7 to 10 minutes before the commissioning is complete. I have received information from a previous question and followed the instructions to check the programs that can slow down the process. It doesn't matter what programs I have disable the startup process is still slow. I noticed that Norton anitvirus does not run on start up and shuts off when I check on the Security Center. Is this the cause of the problem - there was a conflict with the last update?
Any help would be appreciated.

Think about it an absolute must - manually update your drivers.
Vista and Windows 7 updated drivers love then here's how update the most important.
This is my generic how updates of appropriate driver:
This utility, it is easy see which versions are loaded: run DriverView - define the VIEW
for the drivers Microsoft hide - updated those without drain in their names. (Also updated
the BIOS and chipset drivers.)-Free - DriverView utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system.
For each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver,
Description, version, product name, company that created the driver and more.
http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/DriverView.htmlFor drivers, visit manufacturer of emergency system and of the manufacturer of the device that are the most common.
Control Panel - device - Graphics Manager - note the brand and complete model
your video card - double - tab of the driver - write version information. Now, click on update
Driver (this can do nothing as MS is far behind the certification of drivers) - then right-click.
Uninstall - REBOOT it will refresh the driver stack.Repeat this for network - card (NIC), Wifi network, sound, mouse, and keyboard if 3rd party
with their own software and drivers and all other main drivers that you have. Now in the system manufacturer (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) site (in a restaurant), peripheral
Site of the manufacturer (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI, for example) and get their latest versions. (Look for
BIOS, Chipset and software updates on the site of the manufacturer of the system here.)Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - right click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after
each installation.Always check in the Device Manager - drivers tab to be sure the version you actually install
presents itself. This is because some restore drivers before the most recent is installed (sound card drivers
in particular that) so to install a driver - reboot - check that it is installed and repeat as
necessary.Repeat to the manufacturers - BTW in the DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER device - check
manually by model.Look at the sites of the manufacturer for drivers - and the manufacturer of the device manually.
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/driverssupport/HT/driverdlmfgr.htmInstallation and update of drivers under Windows 7 (updated drivers manually using the methods above
It is preferable to ensure that the latest drivers from the manufacturer of system and device manufacturers are located)
http://www.SevenForums.com/tutorials/43216-installing-updating-drivers-7-a.htmlIf you update the drivers manually, then it's a good idea to disable the facilities of driver under Windows
Updates, that leaves about Windows updates but it will not install the drivers that will be generally
older and cause problems. If updates offers a new driver and then HIDE it (right click on it), then
get new manually if you wish.Stop Windows 7 to automatically install device drivers

Laptop: my computer is slow
I've had my computer for a while and it started to slow down in general. Is there anything I can do to make it faster?
Bill
There are a variety of measures to take to improve your computer's performance and to run faster. First of all, I would recommend checking your hard disk space - you should have at least 15% free space, preferably more for optimal performance. If you have a lot of files big media (movies, photos, music) stored on your hard drive, moving those disc external hard can help speed things up. Also empty your trash for free space. Here are some other tips:
- Update software and drivers by using Windows Update and HP Support Assistant
- Update the BIOS
- Defragment the hard drive (do NOT defragment if your computer has a solid state [SSD] drive, as this may damage it)
- A virus scanner and remove virus/spyware
- Close all apps you are not actively using and try to not leave many things open at the same time
- Use the Task Manager to identify which uses the most system resources
- Clean the computer fans and vents to reduce the heat
- Upgrade memory
These solutions are explained in detail, as well as other useful suggestions, in the following documents:
