computer will not start up - the application or the C:\WINDOWS\system32\DNSAPI.dll DLL is not a valid Windows image
When I try to start my computer, I get this message... [the application or the 32DNSAP.dll DLLC:windows\system is not a valid image. [Please check this against your installation diskette.] However, after inserting disc and reboot, I get the same message, and the computer starts. Any suggestions? Please and thank you
Well, I know what this means and have recreated on my system (that's how I got the exact message).
Now we will see this as the system engineers of Microsoft came up with a workable solution that does not involve the possession of a genuine bootable XP installation CD (sorry - there is no Microsoft KB article for this message).
MS has a free support that might be useful:

my windows vista computer will not be validated
I recently installed several security updates, and later my windows vista is not recognized as authentic. I bought it 2 years almost with installed before buying it, so I did not any area recovery CD or windows vista. the sticker on the bottom of my laptop is completely worn out. I downloaded an application key finder and have what seems to be a product key valid, but when I try to run the slui.exe it never ends. I get error 0xC004E003. I also never get an option to activate by phone, I suppose that that option no longer exists. How can I fix? It is the kind of a disadvantage and makes me nervous about using my computer on an unsecured network.
Your error message indicates a "stuck key".
This particular message occur to try to activate a key OEM_SLP - which can be activated by internet or phone-activated, it is based on the BIOS to activate.
Your only real option, as you say that the sticker is now unreadable, is to reinstall Vista using the manufacturer's recovery disks or partition - note that this will erase all your data and programs, so be installed first of all external media!

After finding that someone else had the same problem and I responded went to try the solution but then started to get the message that the file: \windows\system32\config\system is missing or corupted. Have tried to do where I could start up in safe mode and cannot. Tried to boot from the installation CD, but when I try to make the system recovery and choose the system to recover nothing happens. you get a splash screen on startup with an acer for hp dell etc. or the logo of the motherboard
otherwise, it would seem that you have a hardware problem

Vista - computer will not start without the disc
loaded vista on my computer - now computer will not start without the disc
Went into my bios as suggested to check the boot order - and, Yes, I got HDD1 as first boot then CD - but then I remembered something I had seen earlier on my computer - it was on the list the HD which had my system like HDD0 files - so, I checked and there it was - listed option HDD0 so I changed HDD1 of HDD0 and was able to boot my computer without the disk system. Hope this helps someone else with the same prob.

If the system or Mode restore safe work not and you do not have a Microsoft Vista DVD, make a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:
Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.
Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.

NeoSmart containing the content of the Windows Vista DVD 'Recovery Centre', as we refer to him. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.
Read all the info on the website on how to create and use:

ISO Burner:http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html
It's a very good Vista startup repair disk.
You can do a system restart tool, system, etc it restore.
It is NOT a disc of resettlement.
