Configuration problem for ESXi lab network settings

Hello

I'm setting up a personal lab on a laptop. I created 2 virtual ESXi servers with VMware Workstation.
Creating virtual machines ESXi, I chose the NAT option for networking:

s3.PNG

I then tried setting up two interfaces vmkernel on vSwitch0 by default for each ESXi server, select obtain IP settings automatically everywhere, as follows:

ESXi1

s1.PNG

ESXi2

s2.PNG

I have created 4 virtual network adapters for each host and add them as active adapters to the switches.

The problem... or ESXi pings host each other!

What I am doing wrong?

What are the pings, I launched of ESXi1

~ # ping 192.168.138.136

PING 192.168.138.136 (192.168.138.136): 56 data bytes

-192.168.138.136 - ping statistics

3 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

~ # ping 192.168.138.137

PING 192.168.138.137 (192.168.138.137): 56 data bytes

-192.168.138.137 - ping statistics

3 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

That's what I thought. I suggest that you wipe the cloned ESXi host, create a new virtual machine and install again. You can also consider using a separate subnet for the vMotion network to avoid problems.

  • Configuration complicated for my scenarios network

    Hello

I don't know if exactly what I want is possible, but I'll try to describe what I want as indicated as possible...

I use Windows Vista as a host and I have Windows and Linux as guest OS. Most of the time, I have access to the Internet from only 2 different locations, my house and the University. At the University, the connection is simple, wireless and I need to use a HTTP proxy for http connections (I also have access to the SOCKS proxy). At home I have access via the ethernet cable and sometimes also wireless, but in this case, the connection is direct, I don't need proxies. On the host system, on my laptop, I have an application that will take care of the power of Attorney for me, I just need to make profiles and everything will work, but is irrelevant. The wired connection at home don't use DHPC, I have a static IP for each of the computers on the network.

Now, I'm looking for a way to configure VMware network connection in a way where I don't need to change the type of connection network each time I go from the House to the University or the other way around. I mean, if I select NAT, I want NAT to work on the University and at home, if I select bridged, the same...

Right now, I "bridged" selected "reproduce the physical network connection state. DHCP is enabled in the two guests (Linux and Windows, Arch and XP Pro to be precise), and I'm connected to the University WIRELESS network. Everything works so far, the only drawback is that I need to specify the proxy in the two guests. I don't know if the same exactly the configuration works well for me, both wired and wireless connections, but I guess that Yes?

    What I need/want to do:

    (1) is there a way (I have a feeling that it will be not possible) to set up the two guests or at least one of them, to set up the VMware network, somehow that I don't need to specify the proxy? I mean, the proxy is already set on the host computer, it is working, use this connection, use this proxy. Is this possible?

    (2) this is the most important point, and it is important only for the XP client. I am Web Designer and I use the client XP install a lot of browsers and do my debugging it, however, my local HTTP server is on my host machine and in the home, simply browse through 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' and I can see my Web pages. I need to be able to see these same pages by the VMs, no matter if I'm at home (wired or wireless) or the University.

Already, I can access my Web server host, wired home car. Because of the connection of bridge, I just need to get the ethernet address (instead of localhost of course) of the host, and it works. The problem is with wireless networks and I think that it won't matter that I am at home or University. Both have the IP dynamic and maybe another thing that does not allow me to access the HTTP server on my host machine.

How can I do it then?

    > Nazgulled wrote:

    > This isn't the problem. As I said, I "m already running service a host with both configurations ron proxy." I think that the proxy will listen only on 127.0.0.1 and it is probably the only thing I have to > change, other than that, it is good to go...

    Is what proxy?

    > But what I really wanted to know, how to do? Laughing out loud... I already use the trigger guard, how to set up this VMnet1 to work as I want then? That's what I want to know... I've been digging > in the "Virtual Network Editor" but I can't do it...

"Virtual Network Editor" is the right place to go...

If you have not changed the default value:

    • You should have an interface VMnet1 and VMnet8 host in addition to your physical network cards. Check with 'ipconfig/all' of the host. The IP address for VMnet1 is one you need to use.

    • You should have a VMware running DHCP server that provides the correct IP configuration for VMnet1 and VMnet8

    • You should be fine by adding just an another vNIC on the hardware configuration of the guest.

    If it does not exist:

    • Open the "Virtual Network Editor"

    • come on in "Host virtual cards" and add VMnet1

    • go to "Host Virtual Network Mapping", click on the ">" next to VMnet1 and choose "subnet". Enter a network with a mask of 255.255.255 192.168.x.0 address.

x must be a value that is not already in use on the host computer or on the same physical network.
Click again on ' > ' and choose DHCP, accept what is shown.

  • You should now have a network of 'host-only' of work.

  • In both cases:

Take a look at the screenshots. Finally, it should look like to shown here.

  • How do I configure Openfiler for ESXi 5.0 (on which has been installed in the workstation).

9.0 pre-installed VMware I installed in my laptop. I created a 5.0 as a VM ESXi in workstation. And I installed vSphere client 5.0 in my laptop. And I am able to access ESXi from my laptop through the vSphere client.

Now, I created a VM with Windows 2008 R2 on top of ESXi. I installed vCenter 5.0 in Windows 2008 R2 Machine. I have just to connect to vCenter using vSphere client (which has been installed in my laptop) and added ESXi as host in the inventory.

Now, I created a VM with Openfiler. Everything is fine. I want to use this Openfiler as a storage array, and I want the SAN with ESXi and Openfiler configuration.

I think I need to create a VMkernel port group and attach that Openfiler VM who. And if I want to access the Openfiler web interface, do I need to have internet access? We can access the Openfiler Web interface without having access to the internet?

Can someone let me know how to connect this Openfiler as a storage Bay for ESXi and configure a San.

Openfiler does not need Internet access and you do not require an additional VMkernel port for access.  If it's production, you share the management and traffic on NIC iSCSI physical separate and thus vmkernel ports.  In this case, it is not necessary.  Did you do the initial installation of Openfiler to create a LUN for the ESXi host access?

I have my VMware Setup and ready to go.  I have test virtual servers on the SAN and want to connect to the virtual disks of data users. I made copies of the VD data user and copies connected to the virtual machine as LUN mapped Raw. They seem to work ok, but I don't know what I have to configure for NPIV? If I do, how can I change the settings for the HBA on the ESXi host? is there a resource for the syntax and parameters? I will follow my own, but if anyone has any experience in this area (NPIV), it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Gregg

There is no need of NPIV for the scenario you describe. In fact, I don't see a case of usage with the current implementation for NPIV (technically), since in addition to NPIV you must always present the LUNS to the ESXi hosts and map in the RDM.

  • Problems with default vmnet network settings

Frankly I hate it when users post things like "our network in the IP range *.» *. 14.*. "because it makes it harder to follow what that means!

To help understand what is the best way to provide comprehensive diagnostic information is to use the command "Collect information to Support" the Fusion of VMware (menu bar) > help > collect Support information and then attach the .tgz file it created on your desktop for a response post.

Yes, what you missed it that put it over 3 years and is more fully applies if using VMware Fusion 3.x.

Here are the commands of base/files and need cd in the directory VMware Fusion as something different in the 3.x line where it did not work right if you do not.  If you want to change the IP address of the VMnets or modify or add additional VMnets and then make changes to the first network file and the only edit dhcpd.conf files if you need to change the additional default values.

    cd "/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion"
    sudo ./boot.sh --stop
    sudo nano networking
    sudo nano ./vmnet1/dhcpd.conf
    sudo nano ./vmnet8/dhcpd.conf
    sudo nano ./vmnet8/nat.conf
    sudo ./boot.sh --start

  • Networking question in VMware Workstation / nested ESXi network configuration problem

    Hi guys,.

I am trying to set up a virtual lab, I setup a domain, a vcenter server and up to 1 ESXi host controller.

I am really struggling with the network aspect in establishing a vmnic for storing shared, please see the attached screenshots and a few questions:

    1. Is a vmnic a real network map? or vmnic correspond to "network adapters" that you put in place since the setting of your virtual machine?

I followed a tutorial and implement 3 NICs on the ESXi host, in Bridge mode, I tried this in my configuration of vmworkstation and I lose the connection to my server vcenter to the ESXi host.

See screenshot attached to how I configured my ESXi host, screenshot is called 'screenshot2esxihost network', I run got each of the maps defined on NAT network.

    screenshot2esxihost network.JPG

See also the screenshot of how I have my configuration of network settings in my VMWare Workstation, screenshot is called "screenshot1. the tutorial does not show how it has its editor of the virtual network configuration, but it puts its ESXi host NICs in BRIDGED mode, and I'm guessing that you can set this time within the virtual network adapter. If someone could tell me what changes should I make in there and on the network cards in my ESXi host, which would be really useful.

    screenshot1.JPG

My domain controller, server ESXi hosts and vcenter are currently on the 192.168.86 range, which currently stood at NAT

See also a screenshot from the vsphere client - I don't see a vmnic "vmnic0", my goal is to be able to add a "vmnic2" for a separate storage network.

screenshot3 unable to add anymore vmnics.JPG

any help would be received with gratitude, I VCP510 review at the end of the month and really hope to be able to get my lab setup as soon as possible.

The vmnic is the rising 'physical' of an ESXi host. So with the 3 network cards that you configured for the host in VMware Workstation you will see under "Network adapters" and you can use them to vSwitches in the section "network".

  • Configuration of the initial network for ESXi

    Hi all

New VMware user here, set up my first environment. I have an ESXi host who has four physical network cards (NiC0, NiC1, NiC2, NiC3).

I installed ESXi, the VCVA device and multiple virtual machines with great success. They are related to the local storage currently, but I want to connect to our iSCSI SAN.

Physically NiC0 and NiC1 are connected to our regular network switch. NiC2 and NiC3 are connected to our iSCSI network, which is a separate network.

So what I did is NiC0 and NiC1 set as active for the management on the ESXi host network. I left NiC2 and NiC3 uncontrolled.

When I use the vSphere client to create the iSCSI connection, he can't see NiC2 or NiC3. I need to activate all four cards can use them in vSphere?

If I enable NiC2, NiC3 and, they say that they are disconnected, because they are connected to our iSCSI network and have no regular network connection.

Am I way off track here?

    Welcome to the community,

I would recommend you take a look at the Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.1 to discover how to set up iSCSI software.

You basically need to do is to remove the 2 NICs (vmnic2 and vmnic3) of the current vSwitch, create a new vSwitch with 2 groups of VMKernel ports and two vmnic and configure groups of ports to use a vmnic as active and the other as unused (i.e. port group--> vmnic2 active = 1, vmnic3 = unused and port group 2--> vmnic2 unused = vmnic3 = active). Once this is done, you can create the iSCSI map in "Storage adapters" and add two VMKernel ports.

It is also important to review the documentation of storage vendors. Storage vendors usually provide the guide of best practices for how to configure iSCSI on ESXi to work best with their equipment.
