Convert a small SSD using PC Restore fuller?

Can I use complete PC Backup/Restore to convert a disk hard solid state of my office?  The SSD is small (128 GB) than current hd (250GB).  Looks like this answer has been 'No', but I just wanted to confirm that I'm not missing something.  Seems that the problem is that complete PC Restore does not restore to a smaller disk that was backed up (although I use 30 GB of it).  As SSDS become more popular, seems like it might be a problem.  Am I missing something?  Can I do it?  What happens if I decrease my original 250 GB 1 partition down as much as possible and leave the rest not allocated?

There is a restriction that the player restore you tomust be at least as large as the original. To quote:

http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/Magazine/2007.09.backup.aspx

Because the backup of the computer includes a picture of all of the computer, some restrictions apply when restoring to different hardware. First of all, the backup image contains drivers that are used to start the machine after the restore is completed. In rare cases, the pilots needed to start on the new machine could not be present. This can happen when you restore an image backup taken on one type of disk controller (IDE, SATA, or SCSI) for another type of disk controller. Even in this case, it is still a good chance that you can complete the restore successfully, because the common Windows drivers included in the backup of the image would probably compatible.
Second, the restoration cannot be carried out if the new computer has at least the same number of hard drives and each hard disk is at least as large as the original, it replaced. Don't forget these restrictions if you plan to use the backup of the computer for the migration to new hardware.

Windows 7 has much better support for SSDS, I'd take the option to install Windows 7 on SSD and simply copy the data across.

  • How can I make a full copy of the C drive to a smaller SSD for one SSD more?

    My C drive is currently a 149 GB SSD.  I want to replace it with a new, unformatted 256 GB SSD.

    I would like to know 1) if there are specific things to be aware before you format the new drive.
    (2) how to copy all of my current C: drive on the new SSD, and
    (3) how to assign my new, bigger than my C: drive so that I can then format my old smaller SSD as a clean player.

    I put the new drive as SATA port 0 (or 1, depending on where your begins).

    You can use Clonezilla to clone:
    Should work just fine. It will automatically affect the C: drive. Just make sure that it is configured to start first in the BIOS (won't matter on the drive letter, but you don't want a start - they look identical other than the disk space).

    Problem solved. Thanks for the tips on Acronis True Image.

    On my first attempt to mirror from my hard drive to my new SSD using this software, I chose not all partitions, so I wasn't able to get my tablet to boot from my new drive.

    On my second attempt, I created a backup of all partitions on the disk. I recorded this backup file on my desktop. Then I plugged my new SSD drive in an external USB enclosure and which connected to my laptop. Then, I got the backup file on my new SSD. When this was complete, I swapped drives was started for as small, but fast SSD drive.

    Thanks again for the tip on the software. He was free and worked perfectly.

  • Cannot use or restore Vista after SP1 uninstall

    original title: cannot use or restore after uninstalling SP1 Vista - please help.

    In order to perform an upgrade of Vista installation to repair the damage caused by a virus recently, I uninstalled Service Pack 1 (because installation upgrade will not work with SP1). I know there are other things I should have done (a sfc/scannow in theCommandPrompt) or SP1 slipstreamed DVD, but I did not know them at the time, nor did I think there will be problems as a result of an uninstallation of SP1. As the title suggests, I got kind of wrong.

    It all started after uninstallation, which seemed successful. I rebooted, and instead to get Vista without SP1, I get an error code of the variety of the command prompt (just the black screen with white writing). This continues for a couple of times, and after a few remedies attempts that fail miserably, I decide to systemrestore(using the Vista CD, of course) at a point before uninstalling SP1. I think it will work, but the first time, as it gets to the "development of restoration" and how he hung for three hours before, I decided to turn off the computer because he was of course not moveable anywhere. I restart and let the boot from HARD drive upwards to see if maybe something worked, and I get to the login screen of Vista, how I notice none of my devices work. The mouse or the keyboard responds (both are USB) and the attempts with the PS/2 versions don't either. I thought maybe it was a driver problem, so I reinstalled the driver chipset at the disk using my laptop (took thedesktopHARD drive, put in a box outside, then executed the installer of the chipset on my laptop and said to install outside driver), but it could not solve the problem. I also tried other restorations, but invariably they fail after a certain point, which gives me an error message:

    "System restore failed due to an unspecified error. The file could not be opened from a transactional point of view, because its identity depends on the result of a unresolved transaction. (0x80071AA7).

    I googled errormessageand see that most people encounter it while trying to install a service pack, I thought it was a problem with restoring Vista without SP1 to Vista SP1. Thusly, I used the command from theVistaCD command-line option to read my Windows Update log and got the following:

    I can't interpret it, although it seems to confirm my suspicions the transition from other than the SP1 and SP1 is causing issues. If someone else could interpret this?

    Basically I have a non-functional operating system, I can not restore it to a State of operation, nor access the input devices because it does not work on the login screen. Anyone all proposed solutions to the problem, short of a clean install of Vista? I don't want to reformat unless absolutely necessary.

    This is the forum Vista install.

    http://social.answers.Microsoft.com/forums/en-us/vistarepair/threads

    You can try the repair Forum.

    Vista recovery media obtain and/or use the Partition Recovery Vista on your computer to the factory settings .

    There is no Vista free download legal available.

    Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.

    Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.
    See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.
    Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...
    Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Also ask them if it is possible to do the recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.

    They will tell you how to do this.

    Every computer manufacturer has their own way of making recovery disk/s.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, Acer, recovery disk/s etc).
    A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
    The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.
    There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.
    If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
  • Satellite M70: Question on registration after using the restore CD?
    I have reinstalled the OS on my 70 M satellite using the restore CD and now system even once asked me to register with Microsoft and Toshiba. I've already done, so I jumped it. I just want to ask if I use the recovery CD, I have to register again with Toshiba and Microsoft, or is not necessary.
    Hello
    You n t need to save anything when installing Toshiba recovery image.
    The Toshiba recovery image is already out.
    You can register your device on the Toshiba site for more support, but this procedure has nothing to do with the recovery image record.
  • Satellite A660-k17: can I remove the two primary partitions used for restoration?
    Hello
    I have 3 questions :) #.
    1. I burned a copy dvd recovery media, on a laptop A660 k17. There are two partitions on the disk that I think are there for the recovery. The first is 1.46 GB and it's for the recovery and another partition hidden 8.29 GB... and I think that the first contains the Recovery Wizard and the whole environment in which we will get through the repair of the system and the hidden disk contains the actuall with windows data, drivers and so on. Can I remove these two? I ask mainly on the first, if it is not necessary for the system to boot or something after that I have to recover the laptop to the factory setting.
    2 and I also want to leave my partitions so that I don't have to partition the whole drive from C 600 GB again. I have a D drive created but there is this response to a topic already in the forum http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=64754&tstart=90
    who says that when I leave the partitions I created myself, that the recovery will be not available. I have a copy on dvd, but only to make sure no kidding something upward.
    3. when I want a clean system without some software which are preloaded on the oem recovery disk... I have to use windows recovery? or it will be the same as the toshiba one?
    Thanks for the reply possible :)
    Beautiful day :)
    > Can I remove the two primary partitions used for restoration?
    First not, but you can remove the Toshiba recovery partition if you created the recovery DVDs. One day, if you want to install the recovery image once again you can use created the recovery disc.
    After that my son broke his iPhone 4s, I gave her an old iPhone 4.   However, it has a password that we can not remember.  So, I tried to do a reset factory via iTunes.   I followed the process online, including: 1) by pressing the Power button and the hand until the screen displays the connection to iTunes; and (2) then using the restore on iTunes feature that starts to download the latest version of the software.  However, during the restart of the iPhone 4, it goes back to the original rather than repeat password protected screen.
  • Can not you as an administrator when using PC Restore
    I own a Dell XPS M1530 with Windows Vista and has recently had a problem with a virus. Therefore, I decided to back up my data and restore my computer to its factory settings using thePC Restore (Dell Datasafe Local Backup 2.0). Despite the fact that I am the administrator and that you can connect under safe and regular time mode, it doesn't let me log in under the login screen PC Restore. Instead, it displays "other users", and attempts to create the answer "the specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted.
    I spoke with a Dell agent, who recommended I reinstall Windows by starting the resettlement of DVD. After that, the old version of Windows was always on the computer and has finally been removed (using PC cleaning). However, Windows still does not let me run PC Restore.
    I can be sure of the virus, but I would just make sure of that. What should I do?
  • How can I clean install Win 7 Pro on a series of 330 intel SSD using a Sony Vaio laptop as the source. I have the original disc and the authorization only
    My Office HARD drive had a fatal accident and poster now under vacuum. It was a disk of 1 TB with Win 7 Pro upgrade to Win 8 Pro.I have records of origin 32 and 64 bit OS and wish to install the OS on a SSD using the optical drive on my Sony Vaio, which will become then the boot drive in my office.
    [Moved from comments]
    You must do the installation on the desktop. You can not install windows on the disk into a computer and then move the disk to another computer and do work. When installation is complete, it reads information from the BIOS of the computer, on which it is installed and when you put the disc in another computer that Windows does not find the information used during the installation.
    You will need to put the new drive in the desktop, install Windows 7 on it, then upgrade to Windows 7 to Windows 8 again.
