    There are two approaches you can take.

    One solution: you can copy files into smaller "chunks" until you identify the file that causes the error, and then try to find out what is the problem with this file.

    Another solution is to download the program "Robust copy" (Robocopy) to Microsoft and it allows to copy your files.  You download and install in the Windows 2003 Resource Kit (works fine on XP).

    Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit:
    <>http://www.Microsoft.com/en-US/Download/details.aspx?ID=17657 >

    Once installed, you can open a command prompt window (start-> Run-> "cmd") and enter the command:
    Robocopy "C:\photos" 'E:\photos' /R:5 / s
    Where "C:\photos" will be replaced by the source directory, and the 'E:\photos' is the destination directory.  the "/ S" option will copy the subdirectories and the R:5 option retries 5 times on error before moving on to the next file.  Errors should be displayed on the screen and I found errors of command line to be more descriptive than GUI errors.  There are a lot more options, but this should help you get started.

  • Windows has encountered a problem, try to copy a file... why?

    Windows has encountered a problem, try to copy a file... why?  MikeW

    There are many possible reasons.  What you have tried to do over time?  Is there additional information printed with this message?  A few possible reasons come to mind:

    • The file was opened exclusively by the operating system or another program
    • The full path to the file from the C:\... contain more than 256 characters
    • Permissions problem: you have read permissions for the file or permission in writing to the destination
    • The file entry or damaged directory disk sector. (Run the command chkdsk with the /R option to this address)
    • The file is larger than 4 GB and you try to copy it to a disk formatted with a FAT file system.

    I'm sure that there are more reasons, but need more information.

  • Error message "unable to copy the file"hiberfil", it is used by another person or program." Problem copying content from your PC to external hard drive.

    Original title: problem to copy content from your PC to external hard drive.

    I use Windows XP 2000 and am trying to restore my pc to factory settings as it is continuously 'stick '. When you try to copy my drive "c" on an external drive I get a message saying "unable to copy the file"hiberfil", it is used by another person or program." Close any program that might be using the file and try again "." What is 'hiberfil' and how do I close it down as I am not aware that I use?

    Concerning

    Pete

    The hiberfil.sys will be created every time that you start... If you put in hibernation enabled in your control panel, Power Options and the file is 'open' to think that you can actually choose to Hibernate at any given time.  When you Hibernate XP gives a note of it and will write a hiberfil.sys sometimes important in the c:\ folder so that when XP fires again upwards and returns from hibernation, XP will read the hiberfil.sys file and return to the situation that you were in when you put into hibernation.

    I use to be a chronic hibernant because it takes less time to return after hibernation as a cold start.  Sometimes, it can actually be slower that a cold so start your system based on the amount of RAM has.  The more RAM you have, the more your hiberfil.sys will, if sometimes it's faster to move with just a cold start if you Hibernate (26,03 seconds for me).

    If hiberfil.sys is giving you a hard time (you would not in any way copy it) disable hibernation in your Power Options and the file will be deleted immediately since it would be is no longer necessary.  That would solve this, but if you are trying to copy the entire C drive, you will have other files to complain after that.

    It is certainly possible to make a complete copy of the C drive, if you want, but you will have to initialize on something next to your drive hard if you want to do this so the XP files are not used - then you can copy anything and everything.  You can get some imaging software of disc that will also help you.

    It depends on what the problem is you want to solve and what you wand to end up with when you're done (so far, unspecified).

    I would work on figure our why your XP is paste and fix it in place.  XP should not be sticky.

  • Copying files between hard drives problem

    Hello

    I have problems copying files between hard drives on my computer. I was having this problem on Windows 7 and Windows Vista, but never met him on XP.  It seems that there are several similar topics, but I think I've noticed a few oddities in my own experience...

    I have several drives, between 500 GB ~ 1 TB.  Problems arise when I try to copy a folder with a large number of files (pictures, records about 4 GB in size, typically).  Initially, the transfer rate would be HD burst speed, somewhere between 90 MB to 150 MB.  Speed would be reduced to about 30 MB, or even lower.  The transfer ends by becomes so slow that the operation would take hours to complete.  If I try to cancel, it would take minutes to do.  The computer run slowly for a long period of time, with an offset of intermittent until I have to reboot the system.  This occurs regardless the source and destination drives.

    On some Samsung drives, this problem is actually lead to the corruption of data on the source and destination drives and i/o error messages.  CHKDSK runs at startup, try to solve the problem, but the data would be lost or unreadable disc.  I have since thrown the Samsung WD drives, do not have IO error, but the file copy problem persists.  I also disabled chkdsk at startup for all readers.

    My drivers and Bios are up-to-date.  Computer is free of viruses and malware.  I have no more trouble with Windows 7.  Curiously, if I compress my folders/files in one RAR file, I have no problems copying (transfer rate remains stable at 30 ~ 50MB).  This leads me to believe that this is not a hardware problem, but a problem with the Explorer of solutions, and that respect more particularly with the number of files transferred rather than size.  (But unpacking these files also lead to poor performance sometimes...)

    Is this a known issue that will be corrected?  I really like Win7, but because I work with large number of files and many backups all the time, stability during the file copying is a must.  I have perhaps to go back to XP, or use another OS entirely...

    I had the same problem;

    My system-

    Windows 7 Pro 64
    Core i7 940
    7200 RPM dual 500 GB SATA
    Gigabit ethernet

    Gigabit ethernet switch
    Gigabit router

    Buffalo NAS 1 TB, RAID 0, Gigabit Ethernet

    -----

    I was getting speeds of transfer of a maximum of 500 / 600 KB/s between the hard drive and network storage drive. I went through a number of * fixed * on the web without success, however, I disabled "TCP AutoTuning" and "RSS" rebooted and voila, I now get speeds of transfer of 9-10 MB / s and from the network drive.

    The fix
    It should be noted that, in addition to this, I have updated to the latest updates for Windows and off the DRC in the Windows Options under programs/features.

    How to disable TCP AutoTuning and receive scalability side

    1. Open a prompt with administrator rights.
    2. Type the following commands, and press enter (the second command on RSS is optional):

      netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel = disabled
      netsh interface tcp set global rss = off

    3. Restart the computer.

  • Copy the file problems

    First of all, my problem is the following. I know that the only way to copy a folder

    is to create a new folder where you want to copy the original file and copy each file bakary

    and then delete the old file... for some reason my copy seems to be failing. Here's the code.

    function moveItems (fName, pNum) {}

    Temp1 = new File('/p/toConvert/regular/'+fName+'/ImageProperties.xml');
    fileObject = new Folder("/p/toConvert/Done/"+pNum+"/"+fName);

    {if (fileObject.Exists)}
    check = temp1.copy (' / p/convert/do / "+ pNum + ' / ' + fName);
    Alert (Check);
    return;
    } else {}
    Alert ("not here");
    }

    {if (Check)}
    Temp1. Remove();
    }
    return;

    Temp1. Remove(); works and removes the old file, however my alert said that the test failed, although remove worked so that we know temp1 exists, and since fileObject.exists has been spent to get the alert... I have no idea of what the case is, it will not just copy. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    It is the logic of your if statements. You test if the file exists before copying, but not after. And it is difficult to say without seeing all of your code, but you might want to change it (check) if (check == true)

    But I think the key is to not to use the true/false returned by copy. Test to make sure that the file exists before deleting the old.

    var f = new File('/c/temp/-_01-2_-.jpg');
    var fCopy = new file ('/ c/temp 3 /-_01-2_-.jpg ');
    f.Copy (fCopy);
    If (fCopy.Exists) f.remove ();

  • Copy/move files - security problem

    I have a laptop gateway model MP8708, which ran on XP.

    Jack was no longer working with the power cord and the battery wouldn't hold a charge. The computer is unusable without the power supply cord is not an option to turn back on my old Gateway computer. Instead of investing the money in the repair of a computer that is several years old, I bought a new computer.

    On the gateway computer (original), I got my computer set up to always ask for my password before it would allow access after 5 minutes of inactivity proved, or whenever the computer went into hibernation or has been disabled.

    The original hard drive Gateway has been removed so I could copy or move my files from the old hard drive to my new Acer laptop hard drive, and I have a device that allows me to use a USB to connect it to my new computer.

    The new Acer running Windows 7.

    -When I try to drag a file on my new hard drive, I get this: "file access denied. You need give the administrator permission to copy this file. "If I click CONTINUE, I get"file access denied. You need permission to perform this action. You need permission from the administrator of the computer to make changes to this file. »

    -When I try to drag an entire folder of my old hard drive to my new hard drive, I get: "file access denied. "You need give the administrator permission to copy this folder. When I click on CONTINUE, I get: "file access denied. You need permission of the administrator of the computer to make changes to this file.

    I guess it's because I had a password set up, I have * * know the password.

    How to get the old hard drive to let me copy or move these files? They are MS Word files as well as jpg, or audio files, etc., not computer programs.

    Thank you.

  • Portege M400: cannot copy the files on the disk HARD - can't see any of my files in Word

    I bought the M400 a few weeks ago. There are a number of problems. Adobe reader gives "an internal error has occurred", manual installation of download gives "error occurred in the file zip", download or copy of the files on the hard disk gives error "there is no space" when there are only 8 gig used from 60 GB. Now, I don't see any of my files in Word.

    I can also copy the files from the cd or DVD. I'm in canada mississauga on Horus, usually resident in the United Kingdom, so I'm in a precarious situation because I can't in my office to sort out the issues.

    Can someone advise me please why all these problems are happening, do I have to use the recovery disk? Baz

    > Forgive me but how to put the hard drive in business.

    I think that the Johnny means that you connect the HARD drive to another computer using the external USB HDD controller. These external USB HDD cases can be purchase in every store of the computer.

    However, if you n t need data that are placed on the HARD drive, you could simply start installing the OS from the recovery CD. This will format the whole HARD drive and install the new operating system as well as all the drivers, utilities and software further.

    Hello

    The USB drive is formatted in NTFS (New Technology File System) or FAT32 (File Allocation Table 32)?

    Windows stores the file on NTFS metadata using a feature called Alternate Data Streams. In other words, metadata is stored in an another 'stream' (an object file with a different identity system) as the stream that contains the file data. Since FAT32 does not support ADS, given in these alternative streams cannot be copied and will be lost if you continue copying.

    If you have all the data on the USB, then you can format the drive. If unsaved data then you must back up the data on the USB key on the hard disk of the computer, and then restore it after perform the format.

    Try formatting the USB drive to NTFS and check if the problem persists. To do this, follow these steps.

    a. Insert the key USB and go menu start, then computer.

    b. right-click on the USB key, and then click Format.

    c. under "File System", select "NTFS" and then click Start. Once the format is done, check if you can copy the files successfully.

    I hope this helps.

  • The behavior of copy (.png files) screen when using TextEdit and printing

    I have long used the method to copy and paste texts and/or pictures to TextEdit and print files .rtf or .rtfd below:

    I use the command-control-shift-4 and the cursor to select things and paste into TextEdit.

    That stopped working in the Sierra.  I tried several methods (PDF format conversion, fall in Pages and Numbers, for example), but nothing worked: the Canon PIXMA MX922 printed on a white sheet and left the box of small characters with text "filter impossible."

    There is no new printer driver on the Canon site; However, there is a new driver IJ Scan Utility and I downloaded it already after that installation of Sierra and the scanner works fine, as also directly print something (e.g. on the Web).

    Now, after several days of testing and I was wondering, I tried this yesterday:

    Instead of the above command, I used (which I do when I want to save it to the desktop) command + shift + 4.  I copied the file .png from office, dropped in the TextEdit, printed, and... IT WORKED.

    Copy and leaving fall directly in the TextEdit and printing, is so not working, but let fall the same screenshot on the desktop and copy and paste into TextEdit and it print shops.

    I noticed several other annoying problems to Sierra, some I've reported here (communities), some didn't.  Business-as-usual: first version of an upgrade is full of bugs, which 'disappear' in future versions, until a new update is made available, the loop continues, continues, and...

    He works here.

  • Best way to copy a file in the Finder

    I am really struggling with the Mac interface, after having been a user of PC/Windows for decades.  I can copy/move files in Windows Explorer with ease.  On my MacBook, this simple task seems impossible.  My goal is to copy a file from one location to a specific folder.

    In the Finder, I select the file I want to copy and select 'Copy' from the Edit menu.  I then navigate to the folder that I want to place the file, highlight this folder and select "Paste" from the Edit menu.  He went to put in the parent directory of the file I selected, not the folder selected.  Tried to do this by dragging a file (which is really hard when using the touchpad).  When I fall on the folder I want, once again, place it in the parent folder.  As I was doing this on a network (WD Cloud NAS) drive, I gave up and a PC to move the files where I wanted them.

    This is ridiculous.  I thought that Macs were supposed to be easy to use.  I'm almost at the point of return my MacBook to the Apple store.

    Hold down the Option key while you drag and drop.
