I had the exact same problem and error as you message the guy but he fixed earlier. I'm not an expert, or even trained somehow. I just worked through until I got everything to install. If you try this, please back up your registry first.

In any case, here's what I did.

First of all, I uninstalled iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Software updater toally, _-anything with Apple in the name.

I opened regedit using 'run as administrator '.

I then went to the registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-1-5-18\Components\DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\108B43C0CEA676640B35306AE7D24051

.. .and selected the folder DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8

    Right-click & click Permissions
Click Advanced, and then click the owner tab
Type "Administrators" in the current field of owners and th check Replace owner subcontainer and volumes

(Note: I did this because I had another key with permission issues, after I fixed the original onelisted above)

Apply the settings, and then click Permissions tab. Once more, add 'administrators' to the permission entries list, and then click on edit and select all the checkboxes of permission. Also click on the boxes of the 2 bottom regarding permissions inheritable.

    Click OK

Now on the main permissions tab, choose administrators in the windows user name or group and then check the full control and read check boxes. Click OK.

In the main window of regedit, you should now see the keys in the right pane for each subfolder in:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-1-5-18\Components\DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8

In the menu bar click file > exit

I downloaded and installed the new handset iTunes9 and apple Quicktime.

Everything worked well. I hope this helps.

    Hi misterDormie,

This problem may occur if the permissions to a specific key in the Windows registry has been denied because the registry is corrupted or due to registry permissions

I suggest you try the following steps:

Step 1: Check with a different user profile

If you do not have a different user account, you will need to create a (see link below).  If everything works fine with a different user profile, you can infer that the user profile is damaged, click on the link to find out how to solve this problem.

  • Error 1402.Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32\Software\Classes\CLSID...

I'm currently using Vista 64 home premium. I got this error when updating and uninstalling software sometimes in recent months. First, I noticed the problem by updating to Adobe Acrobat. By checking the registry in question key, I received the error message that I don't have permission to view the permissions on the key. When you click again, it lets look a bit. What I found, it was the permissions haven't had no users or groups appear under the security heading. By clicking the Advanced button, click the owner tab, the current owner appears "unable to display property information."

To resolve this problem, I had to return to the Security tab, click Add. I selected administrators and the system of the user/group. I then checked for total control but not clicked on apply. I then clicked advanced and changed the owner tab. I highlighted the Administrators group for owning and clicked on apply. I went back to the Security tab and click on apply to give full control. I went back to Security Section advanced and checked for "include the permissions that can be inherited from the parent. All normal users and groups then appeared with the appropriate permissions. I had to do this dozens of times on the different registry subkeys before operation I could run and complete the update from Adobe.

I found several subkeys that have lost the original users and groups. Some deal with software only, some treat the software/hardware parameters. I have found no consistency for corrupt permissions except that they are always a subkey and more often 'properties', "InprocServer32" or "ProgID" and associated subkeys of the people.

Is there a way to reset the users and groups through the registry without having to track each instance registry in which they are absent?

I had known this same permissions problem corrupted or missing of users/groups with Windows NT4 several years ago when working on several computers and servers. My last attempt at solution involved activating the administrator user (command prompt "net user administrator /active: Yes", logging in as that user, exporting the new record, and then logging in both of myself and import this new registry.) It was quite successful, but there was an alert that certain subkeys elements could not be imported. A number of subkeys that have been corrupted have been resolved, I'm not sure that were not the case of the other keys.
