CPU compatibility for vmotion

Hello everyone

We plan to virtualize office with a view.

I have a server with 2 xeon E5620 CPU intel 4 c 2.40 MHz. I have to buy another server, but I can't buy the same. The other server have 2 CPU E5640 intel xeon 2.66 MHz 4 c.

Is - is this compatible CPU for vmotion?

I read vmware documentation on CPU compatibility, but I can't find the answer.

Thanks for your help.

Hello

You are welcome

mark it as answered a we are good ;-)

  • With VMotion CPU compatibility

    Hello

only, we have installed a new esx server and now when I try to do a VMotion between my first esx Server I get an error, the incompatibility cpu ecx mask etc...

I found the CPU compatibility matrix but I don't know that I understand... so I want a confirmation, please if my proc is compatible for Vmotion.

Here are the 2 processors, Intel Xeon E5450 and Intel Xeon X 5650

If it's not compatible what should I do? wait for a new version of Vcenter/vsphere? I actually use Vsphere/vcenter 4.00 update 1

Thank you for answering this question!

You said you have two hosts E5450. So why not Vmotion virtual machines to a host and then move it to the new cluster. In this way, you will see that it works or not.

  • ESXi 5 provides a great compatibility for several NIC?

    Hi all

This is my first time to vSphere install, and I want to configure a vSphere cluster with a vCenter server, ESXi 12 and a central storage 5.

I intend to use 6 NIC for each ESXi, its use is less than

    eth0 for vCenter/ESXi management

    eth1 for vMotion

eth2 and eth3 to VM networks

    ETH4 & eth5 for iSCSI (multi-path)

What worries me is the compatibility of multiple ESXi 5 NIC. all 6 of my ESXi NIC are Intel (2 exist on the motherboard, 4 from the Intel PCI-E network card)

Intel® 82575EB Dual - Port Gigabit Ethernet Controller (motherboard)
PRO/1000ET four-port network adapter for the server (network card)

    Here are my questions:

    1. ESXi will still perform well? There is no bad effect of multiple ESXi of NIC? (It is generally understood that this NETWORK 4 ports card will consume a lot of CPU and memory)
    2. Can I have 'real' advantage of multiple NIC? There are many examples of books about vSphere implement, that we would make better use of each NETWORK card based on different functions, so several NIC is a good recommendation. Is it really a best practice in the actual implementation of vSphere? or even a golden rule to follow?

Any response will be highly appreciated and useful to me.

Because of the lag time (I'm in China), please execue if I so can't quickly at the time.

Your design concept of NIC has merit. The following link is a design article about 6 implementations NIC for vSphere 5 using IP storage:

    http://vrif.blogspot.com/2011/10/VMware-vSphere-5-host-network-design-6.html

For a procedure step by step on iSCSI SAN Setup and configuration are trying the following (remember that this article is for vSphere 4.x):

  • Steps for VMotion

    Hi all

Is it possible to do VMotion betweeen two ESX servers without virtual Center? I have the trial version of 3 VI that has hypervisor ESX and virtual center client. I want to do vmotion using VI SDK 2.

Is it possible to perform VMotion using all this?

Do need me a permit for this?

Also, when I try to see the configuration of ESX server licenses, I see nothing in connection with VMotion. I enclose copy of screen of the configuration section for the ESX Server. Can someone explain please these questions?

Both ESX servers are installed on their respective hard drives and are not started from SAN. Two ESX Server sees a SAN disk. What else do I need for VMotion? Material of both servers ESX is the same. There is no problem of cpu compatibility check.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

    A simple answer: No.

You can also install the VC server in evaluation mode. VC server is the central management body that allows you to VMotion VM. If you use the SDK to move the virtual computer, you must use the API of the VC server and not an independent ESX host.

If you want to use these features in production (VMotion, DRS) you need to a license to company for the ESX host and a server VC license.

Screenshot of advertising: you do not use Server VC and all the features that require the VC server are not available as VMotion.

Requirement for VMotion: shared storage for the virtual machine, several networks (production NW for traffic, VMkernel port for VMotion traffic). VMkernel port for VMotion traffic must reside on its own physical NETWORK card with a GBit network! Also, you must labeld compatible networks.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers, Matthias

  • Re: Satellite L300D-242 - CPU compatibility list

I was a big fan of toshiba with 3 in the House, but when I come to upgrade the processor, I hit the wall a little. I have the most up to bios date on my 242 l300d pslc8e-06H013EN and I thought I was not looking for a laptop, an upgrade of the processor was option right ahead.
I tried a zm-82 amd dual core as an upgrade for my TR-42, but the system does not even start.

    Q. has anyone had a successful that laptop upgrade or is there a cpu compatibility list?

Zm-82 was a tenner and I went back, but if there is a dual core I can slot, it is much cheaper to replace a good laptop.

I look forward to see if anyone has any advice.
P.s. I did research the dual core, it wasn't a random purchase.

Generally upgrade CPU on Toshiba laptops is not supported so there is no such list.
What you can find is an official document on the CPU and GPU upgrade - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9401AX0001R01.htm

From time to time theme on CPU upgrade is very real fact on this forum, that you can try to get such threads and try to know what other people write about. Do it with advanced search option.

Let's see if anyone else has good experience with the upgrade of CPU on L300D.
He must have a platform AMD, right?

  • Satellite L755-128 - CPU compatibility problem

    Hello dear colleagues,

    As the title says, I have a Toshiba Satellite L755-128 code PSK30E. He has a 2nd generation processor Intel i5 - 2410M.

Laptop that works fine and everything, but I recently got a nice agreement on a more recent laptop with lower overall record, but a better processor. It's an and Latitude E5530, with a 3rd gen Intel i5 - 3230M.

Go to the Intel website, I saw that basically two processors have the same TDP of 35W and the same size of package, both run on HT and have two hearts, the only difference is that architecture from 32nm to 22 nm and the frequency is higher.

In addition, 2nd generation supports 1066/1333 MHz memory, and 3rd generation supports 1333/1600 MHz. My memory is 1333.

Of course, as you may have guessed, I intend to swap the processors between the two laptops. Updated the BIOS on both of them, then replace the processors, re-assembled and starts, surprise: The recognized enjoy the old version of i5, ran fine and all, but Toshiba does not.

He just opened when I pressed the button, but the screen remains black. Then I pressed the button again, it also normally stop. (I repeat, already updated BIOS update, as someone recommended). I disassembled again the Satellite, check if everything is in place, and second starting time still the same.

Then, I am annoyed and exchanged in return on their original laptop processors. And both of them work fine.

So if someone has encountered this problem could you please indicate if you managed to sort it out?
What seems to be the problem, not the Satellite Map mother does'n not support 3rd generation Intel?

If so, why? Or if that would work, what should I do?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hello

I put t know any laptop manufacturer that officially would fund an upgrade of the CPU.
For the most current updates on laptops are your own decision and no one could provide you with a confirmation that your laptop with new processor work or run correctly.

Indeed many people try to update processors, and in many cases, it also works on Toshiba laptops.

But there are a few important notes:

    (1) you must ensure that the chipset of the motherboard would support new CPU. In case it doesn't, you can not use

    (2) even if the new processor would be supported by the chipset, it is still pending regarding BIOS support. BIOS is changed for each series laptop and it is possible that some processors would not fully compatible or supported by the BIOS.

As you can see, the upgrade of the CPU is not very easy and it s no matter that a laptop computer that was equipped with the same processor the L755 takes in charge the other CPU there are many more factors that could affect these updates.

  • addition of CPU/memory for desktop computers in composer linked clone pool

    Hi all

I want to add more CPU/memory for desktop computers in a pool of composer linked clone but I want to build a pool of test out changes first, while the production area is still in place. Can you screw with virtual material in the main image and then take a snapshot and build the pool of test out of it without him bring the clones in the production pool?

I think that the process would be as follows...

    1. modify the parameters of material on the main image of Win7

    2. run the main image and let it recognize the CPU and additional memory (probably needs to restart the CPU I think)

    3. close the main image and take a snapshot

4 create a new pool of test off the coast of this new snapshot

    Thank you!

Yes it may seem straight, it won't cause any problems. If you want to be very careful with your prod environment, you can just clone the base image and make your tests on it.

  • Mulitple-NIC vs. CASL for VMotion

    Hello

    TNX for reading

    I use Vsphere 6

My Switch have Nexus (2Port 10Gbs for Vmotion)! and I don't know which one is better!

Mulitple-NIC or CASL (LAG and Active Mode) for VMotion?

and another Q is for an optimal speed to migrate Vmition. better MTU (Jumbo frames).

    tnxxxxxxxxxxxx

It's actually the answer to your question "Mulitple-NIC or CASL (LAG and Active Mode) for VMotion?", i.e. to use Multi-NIC vMotion rather than LACP.

vMotion network is on an another vswitch. VLAN 500 IP 192.168.1.2

Running Cisco UCS, the vNIC for vmotion are the vlan 500 but vmotion works only when they have access to the vlan 350 the management vlan.

Sorry for the question noob but not vmotion need access to the vlan management in order to work?

    Thank you

No, what you're doing - vMotion running in a dedicated subnet - is actually recommended to do this. Ensure that the UCS switch ports are configured correctly, allowing the VLANS required.

  • Question about the collection of NETWORK adapters for vMotion / VM vSwitch

    Hello

We use vSphere Enterprise Edition 5.1.

We also create separate vSwitch for management / vMotion and VM.

Each vSwitch receives 2 network cards connected to the different switch for redundancy.

We would like to know is necessary to provide the collection of NETWORK adapters for these vSwitches?  Currently, only enable us NIC Teaming for VM vSwitch only.

    Thank you

VSwitch vMotion, we have 2 assigned NIC (nic2 and nic6) with 10 VLANS.  NIC2 and nic6 are connected to 2 different physical switches.

    Should I choose

    (1) both are active

    (2) both are assets + grouping of NETWORK cards?

Question - if there is only 1 VLAN, it seems that NIC Teaming is also not very useful unless we use 2 VLAN (Multi-NIC vMotion).  Is this right?

If you use Multi-NIC vMotion, there is no need to have two different VLANS, all you need is depending on configuration

on your vMotion switch, please create two vmkernel port for vMotion with the same VLAN ID, but the grouping of NETWORK cards as below

    vMotion_1 - VLAN ID: 10

    Grouping of NETWORK cards

    vmnic2 - active

    vmnic6 - watch

    vMotion_2 - VLAN ID: 10

    vmnic6 - active

    vmnic2 - watch
