    Hello

I recently acquired a Portege 3490CT and have installed Windows XP on it. Everything works fine except that I can't adjust the BRIGHTNESS of the screen. I believe that this can be done via the software, which does not support Windows XP.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I can adjust the BRIGHTNESS in the BACK using TSETUP, but Windows seems to get around any setting that I'm doing here.

    Thnaks in advance.

    Hello

To use this feature, you must in particular drivers.
This device has not been delivered with Win XP and I also found this driver in particular on the Toshiba driver page.
I guess, if you want to use the WinXP renounce this function.

    Hi michaelnachname,

Here you can already find a thread on installation of Windows XP Portege 3490CT:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-euro...D=16411䀛

As you can read, you must format the HARD drive and copy the folder the XP disc on HARD drive i386. Then, you can start Setup from the HARD drive without a CD player. :)

  • Portege 3490CT - turn off problem

My Portege 3490CT began to fade after between 1 and 15 minutes from powering it. It now has a damaged operating system because Windows Update was not able to complete an automatic update. Of course, I cannot locate a recovery CD and do not have a CD Player for her in any case.

Y at - it an easy solution for this problem of sleep and no one know where I can source a W2K recovery disk?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Stuart,

This type of unexpected shutdown is usually related to overheat probably so heatsink CPU having dirty upward with the dust and debris sucked into the cooling fans. It can be cured by clean dust accumulation.

The recovery CD copies are available from any Agent of Service authorized Toshiba.

  • No sound on Portege 3490CT with Windows XP Home edition

    Hello

I bought a Portege 3490CT on eBay. Everything works fine except there is no sound available. I use WinXP SP2. I know there is a problem with the service packs, but the same problem exists after installation of Windows XP without service pack: it seems to be, that there is no audio devices available. The Windows Device Manager indicates only something a device "legacy". I think that it does not find the real device of Yamaha.

Install the new driver of Toshiba homepage gives only a "driver not installed" error message.
In the BIOS there is no option to disable the sound equipment.
    It is perhaps damaged?

I hope someone has an idea...

    Thank you and best regards
    Mirko

Usually the legacy term device is used to refer to any device that is not Plug and Play compatible.
I can only suggest why it doesn't and I think it s a driver problem.
The sound card that is installed on this laptop is compatible with Sound Blaster Pro and Windows Sound System.
The computer uses a YMF744B. The YMF744B integrates master audio bus PCI, 64 optical interface of synthesis wavetable, AC-2 interface and control AC97 CODEC.
In case you would recommend for Yamaha YMF752 or the driver that supports the chip YMF752 you are looking for the most recent driver.

    Hello

What the BIOS has been installed on your laptop?
If you use the Toshiba BIOS so there could be an option called configuration of the device.
(it s is available on my Satellite)

You change the option for all devices, you will be able to change the PC Card controller mode. I think you should play a little with this option.
In other cases, the user was able to resolve a similar issue by changing this option.

Please report if you re successful because it would be very interesting for me.

  • Extension of storage on Portege 3490CT

    Hello

I would like to extend the main storage of my 3490CT with an Intel Pentium III.
However, it has 256 MB. The chips seem strange. Where I get fitting parts?
    Thank you
    dagoross

Akuma is right. Portege 3490 cannot be upgraded because you already have 256 MB of RAM.

You want to upgrade the HARD drive? What HARD drive you have right now?
I think you can take t each HARD drive because your laptop is quite old and I know, that it limited the 28-bit LBA ([www.48bitlba.com])

  • Installation of Win XP OS on Portege 3490CT

I'm trying to install XP Pro on my 3490CT. Looking at this forum, it seems that a large number of owners of 3490CT is installed this OS on the unit.

Can anyone provide me with the Protocol of installation for this facility? What do I need, what order drivers need to be installed, etc.? I have all the drivers known for this unit of W98, W2k, and made interesting enough XP (Toshiba's official US site).

My unit has 384 k ram, and media port replicator.

I already posted a request on this forum that explains in detail the problem I had with XP on this unit (1 / / 6/06 - aswnys).

The operating system works well but I have no communications function at all; [i.e. internal network/modem, network on the port replicator, usb device (wireless) network, the network (cable/wireless) pcmcia card all cannot be enabled in the operating system].

Has anyone installed XP on this unit and has the function of comprehensive communication (modem/network]?

The aircraft had W2k installed. Installing XP is an upgrade that includes SP2.

I would appreciate any guidance on this.

    Andrew

    Hi Andrew

It's always a great challenge to install newer OS on older models. Try to install the operating system and if you need drivers for some hardware components to write again. Maybe we can identify the hardware parts and find the drivers to download from producer page.

Please let us know how it works. I have a Portege 7200 but I didn t try installing WXP yet.

    Good bye

  • Portege 3490CT - replacing the fan

My portege started to freeze after about 10-15 minutes of use and the internal fan doesn't suddenly and more.

I guess it's the fan which is the cause of the problem that the screen remains the same (IE probably not the graphics problem) and there is no odd blue screens or errors and CTRL ALT DEL does nothing...

I had the laptop out and checked for dust and the connection of the fan and everything seems ok.

Is it possible to get a fan on its own or is it attached for the heatpipe (it now is back together and can't even remember what it looks like!)

The 3400 series use the same fan?

Apologies for all the questions, but I really need my small laptop works again

    Thanks a lot :)

    Hello

It seems that your laptop crashes or stops because of high temperatures inside the laptop. For the most part, this problem occurs because of the dust and dirt. Fans cannot work full implementation. I don t think you need to replace the cooling module. Maybe the complete clearing of the module and the fans will solve the problems. Also check the settings in the energy saver.

I m not 100% sure about replacing fan on this unit because I don t know if it s just a fan or the entire module that must be removed. But the best way to find out is to contact Toshiba service. There you can also order parts new and compatible.

  • FN keys are not displayed on-screen Portege Z30T-A

    I recently bought a new PORTEGE Z30T-A PT24CE-01600EN5

It is pre installed Win7 and I upgraded to:
OS Microsoft Windows Version 8.1 Pro 6.3.9600 with their CDs.

The problem is that the FN keys are not displayed on the screen.
When I got my laptop under Win7 I would press the FN key and options would appear on my screen, it was great. But after a day, it does not display anything on the screen.

How can I solve this problem?

    Hello

At first, I must say that the described issue is not a problem.
Under Win8.1 Toshiba offered the use FN keys in two modes:
    -Special mode of operation
    -Mode of F1 - F12 standard.

If you use open Win8.1 Please help Desktop > tools & utilities > system settings > keyboard.

Here you can change the mode of function keys.

    Please test its operation.

  • Problem of definition of screen with Satellite 4600

I wonder if anyone can give me advice on my toshiba satellite 4600 laptop. I am running XP service pack 2 and the machine is around 6 years old, has a celeron 733 mhz processor, 256 MB of ram and HD 30gig. The problem is that it doesn't seem to change the definition of the screen (which is necessary for many games).

In the display settings properties there is choice between 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768, however, it is by default to 1024 x 768, and if you change to 800 x 600 all that happens is that the office gets more into the screen of the monitor leaving a black border around the unused portion of the screen (it is like when you resize a photo) (, the picture becomes smaller)-the icons are tiny, so, really, it is always 1024 x 768, but just a smaller version.

When playing the Pinball game that comes with windows XP, the game is really small in the middle of the screen of the monitor, but when I click on 'fullsize' the game remains the same size, but the border around it is growing.

On my other computer, the game expands when you click "fullsize" because it changes the definition of the screen. For the most part, my laptop is unable to change its definition of the screen, but I think it would change the definition of the Frogger game.

I reinstalled windows XP and add service pack 2, but the problem persists.

I ran Belarc Advisor for what exactly is my material, and it has under the display:

-Trident Video Accelerator CyberBlade XP (Toshiba) graphics card
    -Default monitor
    -Generic TV (monitor)
    -Toshiba 8 (monitor) (143 "(live)

I checked the Device Manager in system properties and it lists the display driver:
Trident Video Accelerator CyberBlade XP (Toshiba)
There is no error with the driver, and when I tried to update the driver it says that he could not find a better match than the software that I currently installed.

I thought that the notebook had 3D graphics but it cannot handle even fairly basic graphics in games. Someone at - it ideas?

    Kind regards
    Yvonne

Hi Yvonne, thank you very much for this tip.
It s really a nice info and I think it might help others with the similar problem.

    Hey mate,

First of all I must say that replacement of the screen, and the disassembly of the laptop is usually quite complicated and delicate. You must remove a large number of screws, it must be very careful. So it's not easy to replace the screen.
Maybe you can find some instructions if you're looking for with Google

And a replacement screen or number, you can get your authorized service provider. Simply contact the guy and ask for help and they can exchange the screen too.

  • Portege 3490CT - please help me to boot from the CD ext

    Hello from Maine, USA.

I bought the 3490 ct and a TDK USB CD-ROM drive brand. The 3490CT came with a formatted hard drive. I would start my CD of the OS with the USB CD-ROM and get this computer.

Can it be done? I need to get the Port Replicator and floppy drive?

I tried opneing computer to remove the hard side and put the files manually, but it seems difficult to remove and I don't want to spoil anything (it is surrounded by these tiny wires that are difficult to work with)

Help! How can I get an OS on this thing!

    Thank you
    Craig

    Hello

Your machine does not start from this USB key.

You can only recover your machine using a Toshiba player connected to the Port Replicator port or PCMCIA Toshiba CD player.

    Kind regards
