  It would be preferable to replace the cartridge as SOON AS POSSIBLE. This will prevent further damage of the printer. Sometimes, when the cartridges of remain empty and not replace, it can damage the print head and then you will perform in a whole other issue.

  Well, after letting it sit unused printer for several months, yesterday I just plugged into the USB port, and Windows 7 instantly recognized the Dell Laser 1500 printer and installed the drivers.

  It seems to work very well without any problems! However I do nothing advanced as use it as a network printer. But in my case it worked fine with Vista and seems to work correctly with Windows 7.

  Please post on the forum. The error you are getting is normally a pretty quick fix. The first thing to do is to make sure that you do not have a hardware failure, so for now please remove data cables and leave them unplugged.   I had a color laserjet cp1518 for a few years.  Never out of the box untril 6 months ago.  It wouldn't install say remove the packing inside the rear door material. Today, I tried again.  Same message.  Contacted HP cat and went through all the tests and told me it's a hardware problem and they would replace if under the vices.  The guarantee missed while he was in the box!  Any ideas on what could be the hardware problem?  It has never printed a page.   I took the printer to the seller who has solved in 30 sec.  There is a plastic piece inside the back door that looks like it belongs to the printer.   It is not, it is the packaging!  Don't think that HPa to screw up as I have a 4l laser approximately 18 years and a laserjet1000 which is not much younger.  The two have never had a problem.

  We contacted several times to Dell for assistance to remove the memory in the printer mentioned above.  We have 2 of these printers that have been purchased in 2014 and just out of warranty, which broke.  While we follow the HIPAA guidelines we cannot throw out them without removing any residual memory.  Repeatedly, communicate with several people in Dell support told us to buy a new maintenance contract so that they tell us how to remove broken printers memory.  This is ridiculous.  We are an organization non-profit organizations with funding from the State of New Jersey.  We ordered all our computing devices recluse by Dell for 10 1/2 years.  We have been a loyal customer.  This time when we ask for a simple request how to do to remove the memory of these broken printers, they help unless we PAY for an interview on contracts for equipment which is BROKEN.  Makes no sense and is a bad way to do business; in particular, with a not-for-profit organization.

  Any help is greatly appreciated.  We just need to know how to remove the "residual" of the printer memory to ensure that no confidential information is stored in the printer. Thank you!

  Please try a hard reset by following the instructions contained in this message, How to perform a hard reset, by @Rich1. It is important that the power cable from the printer is plugged directly into the wall outlet, not a surge protector. Questions when it is connected to an uninterruptible power supply/Strip/surge protector power.
