Diagnose/improve the wireless Airport network

I'm no expert on wifi networks, but try to improve ours.

I have an Airport Extreme, connected to a modem of the Charter down.

Upstairs, in my office, that I have an Airport Express with a printer connected via USB.

I think I Express correctly configured to expand or develop, or whether the network.

My MB Air is sitting on a desk about 7 feet to Express in my office.

If I connect to the Express via Ethernet to the MB Air USB connector, my download speed is about 65 MB/s, download about 4 MB/s and the Ping on 31ms.

If I connect via wifi, download is about 20 Mb/s and the stay of the upload and the same ping.

Make sense?

Anything to improve the wifi?

When websites take a long time to react and fill the page, what is the download or ping, or both?

Thanks in advance for all the education on wifi. Enjoy.

Make sense?

Makes perfect sense.  First, we assume that the Express extends the network by connecting using wireless back to AirPort Extreme, correct?

When you "extend" with only a wireless connection and connect using wireless on your Mac, you will generally lose about half or more the speed on the network.

Why? The wireless should make a "leap" in Airport Extreme for the AirPort Express. He must then make a second "hop" of the AirPort Express using Mac wireless. It will take a lot of overhead or bandwidth.

When your Mac is connected directly to the AirPort Express Terminal, the wireless is only to make a "leap", so find you speed or bandwidth that is lost when the Mac connects to the Express on a second Wireless 'hop '.

You want to improve your network?  Connect terminal AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme, using a wired Ethernet cable connection.  There is no loss of speed of the signal through the cable... until approximately 325 feet or 100 meters... so the Express receives a signal of full speed... rather than a slower wireless signal... because the wireless signal slows the other he has to travel and also slows down if it encounters obstructions in the signal path... like a wall or a ceiling.

When websites take a long time to react and fill the page, what is the download or ping, or both?

Could be both, but is usually a DNS problem. Try to use the Open DNS servers or the servers of Google to see if things improve. In general, the DNS servers are better than those that use your Internet service provider.

  • Need to improve the wireless home network

I am trying to improve the coverage of my home network.

I have Fios, and with existing wireless features, there are several dead and weak coverage areas in my house.  This is due to a combination of the place where my router's (limited by the power input) and the confuration from home.

I have CAT - 5 running for most of the rooms, so adding wired devices is not a problem.  I went out and picked up an EA4500 router, and my plan was to convert my Fios router a bridge and then use the EA4500 as the DHCP server.  However, even with this router, my coverage is not improved.  My preferred solution to get 1 or 2 additional access points that I can plug into my cable system, however, I would like to have a common SSID for the network.

    Is a home-based solution available?

It would be probably better get these access points that you plan to learn to eliminate these "notspots".

as suggested previously, you can get a WAP610N or one of the new series of EA (set to bridge mode) router.

  • Can't find the wireless Airport device?

I just bought a new Airport Extreme. I am able to connect to all my other computers to this new Airport Extreme except an old Power PC G4 Mac Pro which I still occasionally use. Before this new Airport Extreme, I was able to connect this Power PC G4 Mac Pro to the previous-generation Airport Extreme. When I go to the Airport on the Power PC utility it does not have the new Airport Extreme. I tried to restart the PC to power, but that did not help. Can someone tell me what I should do to get this connected PC power?

    Thanks for the help.

    Lou

When I go to the Airport on the Power PC utility it does not find new Airport Extreme

You would not use AirPort Utility to connect to the old AirPort Extreme Power PC.   AirPort utility is only used to install and configure the router to the airport... and you have already done this.

The G4 would connect just like any other wireless device connects to a wireless network. Select the network and enter the password to connect if requested.

If the old computer still does not connect, it is possible that security on the old computer's wireless settings are not compatible with the security settings higher than more recent that the newer routers use these days.

  • An Amazon fire TV Stick can join a wireless Airport network?

An Amazon fire TV Stick can connect to the internet via an Apple Airport WiFi network?

It should work... but I strongly encourage you to get rid of the names of apple...

Use all the names that are short, without spaces and pure alphanumeric characters.<10 characters.="" do="" not="" use="" apple="" recommended="">

Also, use changes to comply with the above... but may be > 10 characters if you are paranoid.

Still have questions try locking channels 2,4 ghz to use no security just to test... If he still refuses to connect when other clients in the same place can then you are facing a more serious problem.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio X 305, which gets the connection is terrible in the dorm rooms, that I stayed at last year. At best I get 2 bars.

    (1) I download full bars at home (Fios), which suggests that everything is working fine with my computer. I checked to see if my driver is up to date and it is.

    (2) Nothing in the room who should hinder the reception (refrigerator, etc.). Even if the walls are concrete, I'm right next to the window.

    (3) no one else has the same problems. Whether PC or Mac, people receive a connection much better than I am.

    (4) I already called for help and that they could not understand.

    Hi kmfdm22,

What exactly is your problem? You have a low speed connection WLAN or not your laptop is not all WLAN routers in the range?

What operating system is currently installed?
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, there is a WLAN power save may decrease the performance of WLAN so it s advisable to disable WLAN energy saving. Just check the windows plan power settings and disable the function for each WLAN energy saving power profile. You will need to set for maximum Performance.

You do not have a network printer if you are using usb, I was trying to explain your printer supports print wirelessly to it and this is why you is offered the update, its for the printer.

  • Repairs on the wireless connection

I have a Dell dimension and we have wireless broadband via a router. In this computer, the connection with the browser keeps turn off even if the wireless connection says "excellent". We must repair the connection to the internet to relive. We use Windows XP Pro SP3. This problem will not occur with any other laptop or computer in the House.

    Hi Tinker7,

    Method 1

This problem may occur if theenable IEEE 802. 1 X authentication for this network check box is selected. If this box is checked, but there is no server to authenticate the connection is interrupted. If you turn on the wireless network connection, it disconnects again after a short period.

  • TCP/udp connection via the private wifi network

I want to develop applications using the wireless private network with tcp/udp connection for my Blackberry 8320 (Version 4.2.2.180 without SIM), do I need authorisation from RIM so that they work in the unit? If it is true, how can I get permission?

    I noticed http://www.blackberryforums.com/wifi-hotzone/100800-8320-wi-fi-limited.html

    who says:

"The Blackberry 8320 with wi - fi connection is limited. The only program that can use the wi - fi is the Blackberry browser... all the third-party programs... ie. Opera Mini, JiveTalk and even RIM's instant messaging programs. Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, are all designed to connect using data from EDGE of the phone... None of them can detect or use the wi - fi! »

    If it is true now?

You can use the interface = wifi parameter in the URL to specify that the connection should be performed by Wi - Fi.  However, please note that this setting is available in version 4.5.0 and highest BlackBerry device software.  Therefore, you must first put your BlackBerry handheld.  FURTER details can be found here:

  • Airport Express - to extend the wireless network

    Hello

I have 1 Airport Extreme, make a wireless network and I have 3 Airport Express, to extend the network.

the Airport Express Terminal 2 have connection whit Airport Extreme. The last of them is too far. The last of them can connect to one of the Airport Express 2 located in Pentecost Airport Extreme connection to expand further?

Sorry, but no.  The distant Express which is too far can connect to one of expresses it airport who are already extending the network... so that it can be used for AirPlay or to connect a USB printer. .. .but the distant Express cannot "extend" the wireless network and provide additional wireless coverage.

Ideally, your network could have AirPort Extreme, placed in a central location in the House, and each Express which extends the network would be located approximately the same distance from AirPort Extreme... and... ACH Express would be closer to the AirPort Extreme to another Express.

If this is not possible, then you need to look at a wired Ethernet cable solution for at least one of the Express features, or an Ethernet Powerline solution if you cannot run the Ethernet cable.

  • Can the utility Airport automatically adjust a mobile wireless network to a non roaming wireless network?

    Greetings,

I have expanded my wireless Ethernet (network roaming) cable network.

The Time Machine (primary base station) and the Airport Extreme (base station #2) lights is green and two base stations work properly when played back via the AirPort Utility.

I disconnected the cable Cat5 LAN of the time Machine (happening at the WAN on the Airport Extreme connection) assuming that the go-ahead would begin orange flashing on the Airport Extreme.  He did not.  Everything always worked as far as I could tell.  If I had the cable connected or not, everything worked again 'normal' as it should as far as I could tell.

So here's my question: by disconnecting the ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme, does mean that automatically toggled Airport Airport Extreme for a network utility not travelling?  In other words, rather than extend the network via ethernet, wireless network is expanded wireless?

    What Miss me?

Return to the configuration with the Ethernet cable connected to AirPort Extreme

Open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme, then click on modify in the window that appears

Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the screen

Check the current setting of the network Mode

He must "create a wireless network.

    Is it?

If this is not the case, the AirPort Extreme has never configured for a roaming set up in the first place.

  • Change of modem can improve the speed of Airport Express Extender?

My router is a Airport Extreme 6th Gen.

When Wi - Fi and close this Airport Extreme base station, I get average speeds of:

117 Mbps down and > 11 Mbps upward

At the opposite end of the House, I use a wireless extension: Airport Express 1 St gen - model A1264 (MB32 1LL/A)

Here, the download speed goes up to 14mbps

Download speed rest > 11 Mbps

My ISP will not have my current cable modem: 6580 Motorola (jumpered to disable router) to provide speeds greater than 100/10 (though even I can actually slightly higher than average, I have indicate above).

If I replaced the modem with my ISP (Time Warner Cable) provisions for 200/20Mbps (speeds I pay in fact) - and * if * I got then that 100 Mbps speed increase (wireless) when close to my Airport Extreme base station (and I think I'll) - should I then expect to see a significant speed increase at the opposite end of the House , where I rely on the Airport Express wireless extension?

In other words, is expected to double the speed of my modem now gives me wireless (when you're on my Apple Extreme base station) also be reflected in an increase in speed at the end of the House where I must rely on the Express Extender 1 generation and where I am now only download speeds see 14Mbps?

    BTW:

    1. I can not move my extreme or my Express.  They both must stay exactly where they are. Neither can they cannot be permanently interconnected via ethernet cable.

    2. I don't think the speed reduction I describe is a bandwidth issue because I am the only one on the network and do not have multiple downloads on several devices at the same time.

Before I ring $$$ on a modem that won't improve my speed, you will appreciate any guidance I where I need more.

Change of modem can improve the speed of AirPort Express Extender?

Just a little, at best. The Express pourrait spend 25-30 Mbps. No guarantee, with strangeness wireless... it is maybe the same or worse based on my experiences.

If you need more speed at the end of the House... the AirPort Express must be located to half way between the AirPort Extreme and the end of the House. Ideally, he would have line-of-sight with AirPort Extreme.

Yet, you say that you can not move the Express or the extreme and can't get the Ethernet cable. Have you considered or tried Powerline Ethernet adapters?

  • How the name of your AirPort network expanded

I set up my AirPort Express for wireless extend my AirPort Extreme wireless network, but there are a few things that are not clear.

    1. must / can the Wan have a different name?

    2. which network you connect to?  The original network or Wan name?    If this is the original name, so how do your devices know to use the network regular extended vs.

    1. must / can the Wan have a different name?

It cannot have a different name if you use to extend the wireless network.  See this thread for more information:

Possible to give Airport wifi extender name custom wifi?

    2. which network you connect to?  The original network or Wan name?    If this is the original name, so how do your devices know to use the network regular extended vs.

The theory here is that devices will connect to the airport with the signal stronger. The theory works well with Mac, but not so well with computers and mobile devices like the iPhone and the iPad.

Plan to temporarily cut off the WiFi when you move a PC or a mobile device from one area to another area which will be closer to another airport. Then, turn the WiFi and the device will usually meet the most powerful signal of the nearest airport.

First of all, try to review the next steps, offered by community member @Great-Christine-Tree:

First of all, we have a step by step guide to guide you through the process of diagnosis here:

HP PC - troubleshooting Internet and wireless network

A second option is to try the following steps:
    Powercycle the network:
    1. turn off your laptop.
    2. unplug the power to your router.
    3. disconnect the power to your modem.
    4. wait at least 45 seconds.
5 reconnect the modem and wait for it to come back online.
6 plug in the router and wait for it to come back online.
    7. turn on your laptop and test your connection.

Turn off the power to the adapter:
    1. open Device Manager. (Win Key + R > type devmgmt.msc > OK)
    2. expand the network adapters.
    3. right click on the Ethernet adapter / wireless, and then click Properties.
    4. click on the power management tab.
5 remove the check mark next to allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
    6. click on OK.
    7 test cycle.

Reset the TCP/IP settings on your PC:
    1. go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
    2. right-click on the command prompt icon and select run as administrator.
    3. in the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without the quotes and press ENTER.
4 restart your PC and test.

It can also help to reset the winsock catalog:
    1. go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
    2. right-click on the command prompt icon and select run as administrator.
    3. in the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without the quotes, and then press ENTER.
4 restart your PC and test.

    Reinstall the NIC drivers:
    1. download the drivers from here , but do not run them again.
    2. go to your Start menu/screen and type Device Manager.
    3. expand network adapters.
    4. right click on the wireless adapter and choose uninstall.
5 install the drivers downloaded in step 1.
    6. restart your PC and test.

    Test an ethernet connection:
Explicit. Test if the problem persists on a wired connection to the adapter hardware troubleshooting wireless can be directed to the appropriate areas.

    Test another connection:
Many people excluded their home network as a problem if another device working on the same network. Networking is not as simple as that. Each device interacts differently with your router or modem and it is impossible to exclude the settings for this device until the laptop has been tested on another network.

If these steps do not resolve the problem, try this document published by Microsoft for network management issues: wired and wireless network problems. You can change the operating system with the drop-down list in the upper right of the document.

Please let me know if this information helps you solve the problem by marking this message as 'accept as Solution', this will help others easily find the information they seek.  In addition, by clicking on the Thumbs up below is a great way to say thank you!

I was finally able to solve this problem and I posted the results on another forum, I used for this purpose.  Here is the text exactly as I posted on the other forum.  It answers some of your questions.
Regarding other software that manages the wireless card, Yes, there are (Atheros), he was not managing the adapter (off a long time ago), however, to be sure, I removed it to run in the registry.

Here is the text of how I solved the problem, I mentioned.  If you have more questions, feel free to post them.

    *****

I am just posting this here because I could solve the problem and not able to find a reliable source on the internet on a fix for this and for a problem that is the result of my attempts to fix it.

This is the situation and my landline.

I was getting this error message

    "Impossible to migrate dependent packages.

After trying to install a pacakage KB. It did not matter that one but they have been associated with the Wireless settings.

I continued to try to install the newer packages.
    KB893357
    KB917021
    KB918997

Each gave me the same message

    "Impossible to migrate dependent packages.

I read online that I install KB937143 (update IE7) could help.

I did this and still got the same message on dependent modules.
I also had another problem occur.
In the section my network places properties connection wireless adapters, whenever I clicked the Add button / PROPERTIES without window appears to allow me to change the settings, however, I was able to remove items from the preferred networks window.

My Automatic Configuration Service wireless is running and took Windows to configure my wireless settings.

I downloaded the updates for my driver Wlan (WiFiHP 500) and I still had the same problems.

I restarted KB918997 using the/log option and read the log file. This is the last important lines:

    33.849: MigrateHotfix: hotfix migration KB937143
    34.129: migrating QFE KB937143 with command line: update.exe z q - B: sp2qfe

    36.793: MigrateHotfixes: KB937143 Migration failed
    36.793: DoInstallation: Migration failed
36.933: failed to migrate dependent packages.
39.597: message displayed to the user: cannot migrate dependent packages.

I then uninstalled the KB937143 package and reinstalled KB918997 update with the newspaper of Pétion and he went along. I also tested the buttons add and PROPERTIES in the window of Favorites and those networks worked too.

I checked the logfile KB918997 and he showed this:
42.311: MigrateHotfix: hotfix migration KB932168 have
    42.511: migrating QFE KB932168 have with the command line: update.exe z q - B: sp2qfe
88.768: MigrateHotfix: Hotfix KB932168 successfully migrated
    88.768: MigrateHotfixes: return code: 3010
    88.928: DoInstallation: Migration succeeded

As a side note, I restarted the laptop frequently just to be sure.

So, really, the option of running with the Ko log file helped me diagnose the problem.
