dialog box "Choose the program you want to open this file" is displayed when I start (after shutdown or restart) with my windows username listed in the file to open

As I mentioned, the dialog box appears after every restart.  It occurs after I entered my credentials to logon and proceeded to windows.  It seems to be pretty late in the boot process that things like the chat programs and widgets are fully charged at the time wherever the dialog box is displayed.

The dialog box appears to be the 'Open with' dialog box in Windows 7 standard.

Specifically the dialogue reads as follows:

Choose the program you want to open this file:

File: Mathew [it's my user id and he showed not extension)

If I open the file into something like Notepad, then the information below is presented (the # s are real numbers, but these looked like mac addresses, so I left)

Samhrutha,

I solved the problem.

I found that when creating a new user, no longer had the open with dialog box.

I started the process of resolution of a corrupted user profile (which seems little more than creating a new and copy and paste a few old values), when I decided to try one last thing.

I logged on my account corrupted again and when the 'Open with' dialog that I open the file with Notepad.  I tried to "save under" to locate the file and found that it was located in C:\Users.  Something in recent weeks seems to have put a file without an extension, called "Mathew" (my log in name) in this folder, and it began when I started windows.

I have since deleted the file and am no longer get the "Open with" dialog

Thanks for your support!

  • I can't open anything without: "choose which program you want to use to open the file with" and "Application not found".

I got a used computer and it worked fine for a while. I guess that I did something for her, because now I had a problem with the opening just like files and almost all of the icons in the start menu. I found someone had mentioned this on another post, but it has not been answered and I have the same problem:

"I don't know what to do. I tried reseting IE back to its "settings by default, but nothing seems to work. It doesn't let me open any programs on my computer. I can't even find the virus because there asking what program I want to open it with and when to choose IE he sent me through a series of 'SAVE or RUN' windows and then back to the "choose a program you want to run the file with.» I am only able to access the internet via a shortcut of Internet Explorer button that I dragged on the start menu, because the original one on my desk does not open. »

It's the best way I can explain this problem. I've had this problem for a while now and I have looked everywhere for an answer and still nothing. It would be great to get help, thank you!

After much research, I found the answer here:

    http://WindowsXP.MVPs.org/exefile.htm

    But thanks for the help!

This problem has not helped me with my problems to download iTunes correctly, that's why I set out to solve this problem in the first place. I also get a lot of it popping up every 10 minutes:

"MobileDeviceService has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. »

    The error signature is always:

    szAppName: AppleMobileDeviceService.exe szAppVer: 17.88.0.8

    szModName: kernel32.dll szModVer: 5.1.2600.5781 offset: 00012afb

It won't do anything when I click to send error report or not, it does not close anything as it is normally would. I think it might have something to do with the steps I took to reinstall iTunes properly...

    And

    1. I use Microsoft Windows xp Version 5.1, at least that's the stuff I wrote, do not know if this is the answer you're looking for. I am not sure computers.

When I go to open a file a box comes up to choose what program I want to open with.  At the bottom of this box is a place where I'm supposed to be able to check who always says "use this program to open this file" I can't check this box.  I open office.org and it allows to automatically save in this format.  Microsoft word program has been installed on my computer and he began to do what I said above then my daughter-in-law.  I've since removed the Microsoft Word program, but it continues to make me choose program to open whenever I try to open a document that was created after she comes to settle the Microsoft word porgram.  Now, even if I had clicked on save in openoffice.org, with that I always get this box asking me what program I want to open.  Thank you for your help.  Marilyn.

I guess the box to "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is grayed out, and that's why you can not check it out.  Is this correct?  Is this true for the two files that were created in OpenOffice files AND that were created in Microsoft Word (note that created is the same that that edited not)?

In OpenOffice, make sure that the "automatic file name extension" option is enabled in the file "Save as" dialog box.

    • Click on "My Documents" (or open Windows Explorer and go everywhere where your documents).
    • Click Tools > Folder Options and then click the view tab
    • Scroll down to the bottom of the "Advanced settings" area and make sure that "Hide extensions of known file types" is NOT checked.

  • In Windows 7 when you try to copy files to an external hard drive, getting the error "are you sure you want to copy this file without its properties?

I know there have been a few posts on this in the past, but I have a slightly different query.

To copy files from my drive NTFS of Windows 7 64 bit for my Western Digital My Book World Edition II 2 GB player manually, not with the WD software provided), for some files, the following message appears.
"Are you sure you want to copy this file without its properties?  The X file has properties that cannot be copied to the new location. »
After investigation, it appears that Western Digital My Book World Edition II is not NTFS format and is, in fact, driven Linux.
Their technical support has confirmed that, despite the message, it is safe to copy files and rely on this backup (I want to backup my drive HARD whole so I can do a clean install - so it's really important!).
Is anyone able to advise exactly what means the message in terms of properties lost?

If you right-click on one of the files in Windows Explorer, then select Properties, you will see the Details tab of the properties he wouldn't if the files have been copied to a drive not NTFS. They are written in an Alternate Data Stream (ADS), and the FAT format readers include ADS.

It depends on the file type of the importance of these properties. If you have spent a lot of time, adding titles and comments and authors and authors e-mail addresses to docprops your Word documents, for example, that the work would be lost.

If you can live with the loss of these properties, go ahead - standard properties will be re-writings in the file when you restore from backup. It's of course time and resources.

To avoid this problem, format your external drive to use the NTFS system.
