  • How to recover from the failure of a with ESXi USB flash drive?

I have ESXi 5.5 running on a 16 GB USB flash drive.  The system itself has a RAID card and drives mirrored where all virtual machines are stored, so it seems to me that a critical point of weakness is the drive itself.  If die ESXi itself running flash player, is there a procedure to recover the virtual machines on the disks?  Or should I keep a backup of my drive as well?

    1. How to restore the operating system assuming that the flash drive fails? If I reinstalled ESXi on a new drive of the same thumb, would see the VMware VMs existing on the hard drives of the server? Or is the process of discovery of the relatively painless existing virtual machines?

If your flash drive goes down, will not be a problem that you have your virtual machines without danger on the separate data store in the locally attached storage drives. all you got to do is to reinstall ESXi host, he will be happy to see the existing VMFS data store and browse this data store where are stored the re-save you and virtual machines in the inventory.

This is not possible (I never tried myself) If you use an external flash drive, but let's say that you have any material to the specific provider giving this feature as

  • HP DL360 G6 "Noncompliant" with ESXi 5.1

    Hello

I have two DL360 G6 running with ESXi 5.0U1 and I wanted to upgrade to 5.1.

I downloaded die ESXi HP - 5.1.0 - standard-iso and added to the Update Manager, but when I check for an upgrade, I get the error that the servers are "Non-compliant".

The DL360 G6 VMware Compatibility Guide must be supported for ESXi 5.1.

Is it possible to know why it is Non-compliant?

If I'm not mistaken, UM produce generally / alert error "Non-compliant" If ONLY your hosts (ESXi 5.0) do not correspond with your intended base line (5.1 ESXi) when you attach it to the guests. However, once you patch the host with this baseline, it should change to consistent.

    'Inconsistent' should be of concern.

  • ESXi 4.1 and Dell PowerEdge 860

I can't find Dell PoweEdge 860 to VMware hardware compatibility list.  And it is not in "Die ESXi 4.x compatibility" Dell either.  But I found a few post on someone managed to install ESXi 4.0 on a USB key.

My 860 PE has a SAS 5/iR adapt (RAID controller).  Someone managed to installed ESXi 4.1 (U1 or U2) on this model?  Should I use generic ISO image to ISO from VMware or custom Dell?

    Thanks in advance

Right, in my view, this is going to be a monologue

    So I finally tried Dell's custom ISO for ESXi 4.1 U2 (VMware-VMvisor-InstallerCD-4.1_Update2-502767.x86_64-DellCustomized_A02.iso)

ESXi software has been installed without problem.  My RAID controller is correctly recognized as SAS 5/iR adapter.  And things are obviously well run.

However, there is something quite disturbing: the disk data store has the property

    Hardware acceleration: unknown

More, even if my drives are SAS 15krpm, disk i/o is really slow (especially writing). When the server was using Windows Server 2003 R2, the writing on the disc was faster.  I don't know if there is anything I could do...

I just hope that this server could last for the next two years, after which I might be able to have a new

    Hallo zusammen,

    Wir haben yesterday following configuration:

Die Sollter der ESXi SSD, welche als volumes logics angebunden sind als SSD observes können?

Vielen Dank vorab as eure Hilfe!

    LG,

This does not mean that you are doing something wrong but,.

[1] ESXi does not recognize some devices such as SSD when vendors do not support automatic detection of SSD.
[2] in addition, some SAS non-SATA SSD can not be detected as local. When the disks are not recognized as local SSD, they are excluded from the list of available SSDS.

So even though that your HW is in HCL, there is nothing wrong with trying the steps listed in the KB.

    Hallo!

  • 2 physical CPU considered 4 CPU in ESXi

    Hello

I had a problem on a UCS B200 M4 blade. the blade contains 2 physical CPU E5-2660 [email protected] (10 carrots each)

ESXi 5.5 u2 (with or without custom image cisco) installed successfully.

But ESXi 5.5 see 4 physical CPU with 5 cores of each instead of the 2 physical.

I have no idea why, maybe the bios features but do not know which?

    Someone has an idea?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Is the question on the community of cisco. It seems that the E5 v3 adds a new feature called COD (Cluster on Die).

Unfortunately this feature is not supported by VMware for now (even in u2 5.5).

It is possible to disable in the bios.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Deleting comments VM to host on ESXi 3.5

    Hi all

I have an ESXi host VMware 3.5 with 2 comments Windows 2003 server on it systems. About 5 months ago, I came across a problem with the host because I initiated a few shots short of disk space. It caused the two systems to stop and even if I don't remember all the steps that I took at the time, I ended up creating a 3rd guest vm and moved the 2 files to disk vmdk 1 vm comments troubled the new virtual machine to comments. The second vm of comments, I myself turn once again with no problems. Doing this, that I could get the troubled host that is running again and I now want to delete the old vm comments that had the power turned off and don't use it. I know how to remove a guest virtual computer (right-click on the virtual machine and choose Remove in the disc) but when I start the process, it gives a warning message. The part that worries me the most is the part that says: "Please note if other vm share this basic disk, they won't have access to this disk." There are currently no drive associated with this machine vmdk virtual comments and when you browse the data store you see no disk in the guest virtual machine folder. The hardware configuration for the virtual machine only shows memory and CPU.

Before deleting this vm disk prompt, that I wanted to make sure that it is has nothing in any file of configuration, always associated with the VM comments troubled which can make finding the original vmdk disks (since they are always the same, but now in a different location) and delete because at some point, they were associated with the guest virtual computer troubled. I don't need to have my new vm work comments die because somehow he finds these discs and deleted when I delete the old vm comments troubled. While it seems that in the folder created when the guest virtual computer was built and deletes the files in this folder only, I should be OK since I moved the disks for the new folder, rather than simply plug them in their original location.

Please let me know your thoughts and thanks for your help. I know I can do a backup before performing this deletion (I have the Veeam backup free version) but a single disc is 60 GB and the other is 25 GB for any virtual machine backup takes about 5 hours.

    I could do this-

I guess another way to clean up this would be to browse the data store and go to the folder of the node I want to delete and delete all the files, then delete the folder. After that I can remove the server from the inventory since there is no longer any folder or files stored on the drive. It seems that this would actually do the same thing but I don't know if there is any other household who will miss him when removing a server in this way, that's why my preference was to choose the server to remove from the disk method.

  • Need help PowerCLI with recovery ESXi host Asset Tag Info

In the hope that someone, anyone, will be able to help me understand what I can do wrong and how to use PowerCLI to retrieve valid ESXi host Asset Tag information that appears in the tab material status vCenter. I have absolutely no problem of recovery of the serial numbers of host (sometimes referred to as Service Tags), manufacture, model, part, build, etc., but don't can't seem to be able to interrogate the current numbers of inventory number .

None of the following attributes or property values currently returned the information required and which exists (see image below):

    Hardware.SystemInfo.OtherIdentifyingInfo [0]. IdentifierValue

    Hardware.SystemInfo.OtherIdentifyingInfo [1]. IdentifierValue

    Hardware.SystemInfo.OtherIdentifyingInfo [2]. IdentifierValue

    Hardware.SystemInfo.OtherIdentifyingInfo | where {$_.} IdentifierType.Key - eq "assettag" IdentifierValue})

vCenter Server Hardware Status Tab - Asset Tag Info.png

This is the script that I am running. I used PowerCLI Version 5.1:

$VIServer = 'enter vCenter Server Name'

    # Add component snap kernel PowerCLI
    If (!) () Get-pssnapin-name VMware.VimAutomation.Core - erroraction silentlycontinue)) {}
    Add-pssnapin VMware.VimAutomation.Core
    }

    SE connect-VIServer $VIServer

    $HostReport = @)

    $VMH = get-VMHost | Get-View | % {}

$Report = "" | Select the host name, Version, build, manufacture, model, series, Asset Tag

    $Report.Hostname = $_. Name

    $Report.version = $_. Config.Product.Version

    $Report.Build = $_. Config.Product.Build

    $Report.manufacture = $_. Hardware.SystemInfo.Vendor

    $Report.Model = $_. Hardware.SystemInfo.Model

    $Report.Serial = $_. Hardware.SystemInfo.OtherIdentifyingInfo [0]. IdentifierValue

    $ Tag = Report.Asset?

    $HostReport += $Report

    }

    $HostReport | Export-Csv «.\HostReport.csv"- NoTypeInformation

    Disconnect-VIServer-confirm: $false

    Ron thx.

As far as I know, has nothing to do with PowerCLI, this is how vCenter gets this information, and how and where some HW providers make this information available.

With the interface of the CIM, you can dump all the available information and then find exactly the tag died murdered.

    See what this returns

    import-module CimCmdlets$esxiHostname = "MyESXiServer"$HostUsername = "root"$CIOpt = New-CimSessionOption -SkipCACheck -SkipCNCheck -SkipRevocationCheck -Encoding Utf8 -UseSsl$Session = New-CimSession -Authentication Basic -Credential $HostUsername -ComputerName $esxiHostname -port 443 -SessionOption $CIOptGet-CimInstance -CimSession $Session -ClassName CIM_Chassis

You will be asked the password root ESXi.

On some of our older IBM HW, I get the following where we expect the identification sticker.

But the information is there, just to another property.

As we have already mentioned our VMworld session, exploring the CIM API.

There is a lot of information in there

  • TCP Offload checksum 5 ESXi hypervisor

    Hi @all,

I searched for a while if there is no option for the unloading of TCP checksum on the level of physical network adapters or the VMkernel?
I know that there is a possibility to make and on virtual machines with a VMXNET 2 or 3 adapter.

I found the following sentence on this site http://thefoglite.com/2012/08/22/tune-esxi-host-networking-configuration/ I'm curious if this service is really supported.

"Using the cards most recent physical network and ESXi hosts, an administrator is able to enjoy a variety of performance and improvements, including unloading:

Unloading of TCP checksum - Checksum of the packet network operations performed by the network adapter. »

I'd be really grateful and happy if someone can help me on this issue because I need the answer in my master's thesis, which should be completed by next week.

    Thank you
    Florian

Geschehen gern, question hat mich neugierig gemacht auch die. Damit aber vielleicht noch andere von den info profitieren koennen und da das yesterday der Französische Forenbereich ist, die eher Konversation in Englisch halten aber Ich wuerde.

It seems that the documentation on unloading of TCP checksum is rather mediocre, unfortunately, unlike the case with TSO.

Adding to the confusion in full, there is apparently a way to set it up on a vSwitch too? : http://www.peetersonline.nl/2008/11/modifying-vswitch-offload-policy-with-powershell/

I also found reference to the unloading of TCP checksum support in official documents of performance best practices (since at least version 4.1) by VMware:

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/Perf_Best_Practices_vSphere5.1.PDF

For network performance, we recommend the use of network cards that support the features material thefollowing:
    Checksum offload
    Segmentation of TCP offload (TSO)
Ability to handle high memory (i.e. 64-bit DMA addresses) DMA
Ability to manage several elements Scatter gather by image Tx
    Extended frames (JF)
    Receive a big unloading (LRO)

    C Checksum Offload
An option allowing a network adapter to compute the TCP checksum, thus reducing the CPU load.

  • 1st install ESXi does not connect to the network

I used VMware Fusion and several versions of the workstation. I am a computer SCIENCE student and I'm trying to set up a virtual server for the purpose of learning environment.

First, I installed ESXi in workstation computer on my laptop. I scare IT LIKED. I ran to the store bought a fresh HDD to install ESXi to my old server Supermicro (MBD-PDSMA + o LGA). During installation, I received a warning that the Intel Virtualization has been disabled on my motherboard. I activated that can restart the installation. No matter what I try I can not this 'thing' to get an address from my DHCP server. I even tried unpluging my router and using several computers on my network as DHCP servers. Each of them I tried my entire network has received fresh IP address but my supermicro box did not. I tried to use two network, port 0 only ports and only 1 port. After having lost about 24 hours I tried to install 5.0.0 and it worked without problem. I would like to be able to update the latest versions unmolested my network connection is going to die on me when I do.

    Ideas?

My next issue will be storage because not even my JABOD drives appear in my passthrough RocketRaid 2220 and PCI does not seem to be an option for this card. Yep, that's good baby PCI - X... Say what you want about RocketRaid, this card was sitting at the bottom of a box of son with no static case a few years to 3-4 moves and it still works like a champ.

I had the same problem with a card mother similar supermicro who has the same Intel Lan Adapter as yours.  Using the e1000 drivers of 5.0 worked for me.  I followed the instructions in this thread:
