disable AutoPlay

Whenever I attach all remote drive - thumb drive, smartphone, CD - it seems that about 4 or 5 all programs want to open files - Paperport, Photoshop, Adobe, etc.  90% of the time, I just want to search for files and directories.  Often, I have to wait for these programs start before I can close them.

Is there a way to stop these programs want to automatically open all?

Hi, Mantisjmh,

Start > Control Panel > double-click default programs

Click on Change AutoPlay settings

Uncheck the box Use AutoPlay for all media and devices

Click Save (lower-right)

Close the window

When you open default programs, you have the option to set the default program.  There are drop down menus to select from each item.  If you use these, don't forget to click on save to save the changes.

  • Disable AutoPlay or switch divs?

If it's in the wrong section please pardon my noobishness, and feel free to move it there where it should be.

I am currently working on a Web site and the client asked me to include an swf on its new Web site animation. It was not made by me, nor do I have the .fla file.

It's easy enough to view the file, the problem is that he asked me to disable automatic playback.

I was wondering if it was possible by editing the Javascript file? I was wondering it was possible to call the first div, leaving the "webvideo" div "playagain" hidden until the button is clicked.

Please could someone tell me if this is possible. I don't know javascript, so I'm really at a loss. Thank you.

  • How to disable AutoPlay?

Toggling off "autoplay to authorize" in settings does not work on some Internet sites. PCWorld.com is an example. I'm doing something wrong or if this feature is broken?

Do you mean the media.autoplay.enabled preference? Unfortunately, sites can now bypass this setting by considering the player stopped when the page loads and then using script to send reading order to the reader. This gap should be closed in Firefox 41, according to an article I read in the bug tracking system. But I don't know if that's what you see on the site of problem.

I click on settings and change automatic playback off. the next video I select start automatically. I set AutoPlay to off. I changed the setting of the large control panel. This did not help. the videos continue to AutoPlay.

  • I am trying to disable AutoPlay

I tried to run gpedit.msc but Windows says it can't find the file. I am planning to try the "Let me fix it myself" approach, but I would check for alternatives first thought.

Refer to the following Microsoft KB Article:

"How to disable the Windows Autorun feature"

You will find 'gpedit.msc' apply only to Windows XP Pro.  XP Home doesn't have a gpedit.  About 1/3 down from the article is a paragraph titled 'Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP'. Just after that it's a "Fixit" button you can hit to have Windows for you to do or you can continue to the section "Let me fix it myself".  Your choice.

Look for the symbol in the 'Elements' of you control panel, and then double-click the symbol icon. This will open this symbol and on the left side of the screen, in the "Properties" Panel, you'll find the checkbox for "Autoplay".

    Gidday.

As an Australian, I am faced with download limits on my internet and often catch to navigate to pages that auto-charge content I can not want to show, or at least not until I read the comments/reviews. Is it possible to prevent this content (think: Youtube movies or other sites) to auto-jouer without permission?

    See you soon.

Not with the Flash drive, customer, but maybe some sites have preferences that you can save?  (This is the site that decides if videos start automatically or manually).

    Hi ByteBowser,

Welcome to Windows Vista answers Forums!

From Windows XP SP2, AutoPlay is enabled for removable drives also. This includes ZIP drives and USB mass storage devices. If you activate the settings disable AutoPlay, you can disable AutoPlay on a CD player, on removable media, on all players readers.

When you set the option as options to disable automatic execution, it is set as default and no change is possible.

However, in order to disable specific Autorun features in a selective way, you must change the NoDriveTypeAutoRun entry in one of the following subkeys in registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\

The following table shows the settings for the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry entry.

    Value

    0x1 or 0x80

Disables autoplay on drives of unknown type

    0x4
