Hello Gene,

It seems that the Virus or malware is not completely removed from the computer. Iwould suggest you first try to run an online virus scan and remove items infected your computer.

Run a Virus scan online direct assistance of a care utility.

http://OneCare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

Also, follow the steps mentioned in the link below as well as to get rid of malware.

How to get rid of malware.

http://social.answers.Microsoft.com/forums/en-us/vistasecurity/thread/ba80504b-61f1-4D71-960f-b561798b7b42

You can also download Windows Defender on your computer and try to scan the computer using Windows defender and delete infected items.

http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/products/winfamily/Defender/scan.mspx

http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/products/winfamily/Defender/default.mspx

After the audit of scan virus online if you can start the Windows Security Center service. You can also check the dependence of the Security Center service and check if they have been set to automatic and started. You can restart all services of dependence for the Security Center and check if that helps you solve the problem.

I hope this helps. Let us know the results.

Thank you and best regards,

  • What is the Windows Security Center and is compatible with Avast antivirus Protection?

I installed a paid for version of Avast on my Windows XP computer. (I won't be upgrading to a more modern version of Windows.)

I also called Windows Security Center.

Is the Windows Security Center virus protection, or is it simply a place to control and discover whatever you have antivirus protection?

If it is a virus protection, it would hurt Avast and if so can I uninstall it?

If I removed Avast and didn't have Windows Security Center, I should any type of protection against viruses on my computer?

The only type of protection against viruses in addition to Avast, I am sure that I have on my computer is Windows Firewall. I turned that off and am now strictly protected by the firewall of Avast. Windows Security Center notifies me of cannot have two firewalls upwards at the same time.

If Windows Security Center antivirus protection it would do no harm to leave it on if the firewall is disabled and Avast is installed? Part of Windows Firewall Security Center Windows or another program?

    Guesses are welcome. Thank you.

    Hey there Clinton!

I've identified two questions here, your normal text questions and my answers in bold:

Is the Windows Security Center virus protection, or is it simply a place to control and discover whatever you have antivirus protection?

Windows Security Center is not a virus protection it's just simply a place to control and view the status of the installation of malware * protection software, but also the firewall on your computer.

Part of Windows Firewall Security Center Windows or another program?

Windows Firewall is a separate component.

Does Avast! Damaged, if I have another antivirus running program?

It is not clear what might happen, but software may conflict with each other and may not work as expected.

I hope that I have answered all your questions!

  • cant get anti virus program to turn it on in the windows Security Center

I have windows vista and an alert pops up, saying: my antivirus program is disabled. I opened Security Center says AVG anti virus reports that it is turned off. I clicked on the button, and it didn't turn it on. another box pops up asking if I trust this program click Yes, I have confidence in it. Yet once, nothing happens.  any suggestions on something that I could try.

Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Windows regularly checks if an antivirus program is installed on your computer, that they are running, and that it is up-to-date. The status of your antivirus program is displayed in Windows Security Center. However, Windows doesn't detect all antivirus programs, and some antivirus programs report their status to Windows.

If you receive notifications related to security on your virus protection software, but you know that your antivirus software is installed and updated, you can follow the steps below to stop receiving these notifications. You should do this only if you are unsure that you have a full, the up-to-date antivirus program installed on your computer and that real-time scanning, which checks every file before it is opened or used, is turned on.

To specify that you are using an antivirus program that Windows does not find

    1. Open Security Center.

    2. Click on protection against malware, and then, under virus protection, click on show me my available options.

    3. In the Windows Security Center dialog box, click on I have an antivirus program that I will control myself.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Security Center displays your antivirus settings as not monitored, and you will not receive more notifications about your virus protection software.

    Note

    • The show me my link options is not available when the Virus protection setting is marked on.

I try to do a repair of the system with one or the other repair disk or installation disk.  If you don't have either, you can do a repair disc by clicking on start-> Control Panel-> backup and restore by clicking on create a system repair disc.  If this does not work, you may need to restore your computer to factory settings.  I would back up all the important files now while you still can because you don't really know how damaged your computer is.

    Good luck.

    =======================================
Here's what I use and recommend:

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with everything I threw at them.
Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven very reliable and compatible.

Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except away from Standard, Web and network is working.

    Prevx - Home - free

    Windows Firewall

Windows Defender (is not necessary if you use MSE)

    Protected IE - mode

IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)

I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.
(Sometimes you have to temporarily turn off with the little icon to the left of the + bottom right of IE)

Avast - stop home - free - all shields you do no need except leave Standard, Web and network running.
(Double-click the blue icon - details look OK. - upper left Shields - those that you do not cancel).
    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Or use Microsoft Security Essentials - free
    http://www.Microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Prevx works well alongside MSE or Avast

Prevx - Home - small, fast, exceptional CLOUD free protection, working with other security programs. It comes
a scan only, VERY EFFICIENT, if it finds something to come back here or use Google to see how to remove.
    http://www.prevx.com/   <-->

    PCmag - Prevx - Editor's choice
    http://www.PCMag.com/Article2/0, 2817,2346862,00.asp

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only. If you ever suspect malware, and that would be unusual with
Avast and Prevx running except a low occasional (not much), updated cookie and then run it as
a scanner. I have a lot of scanners and they never find anything of note that I started to use this configuration.

  • .exe files are not open; affected by the Windows Security Center of lazy virus

    Hello!

As the title indicates, none of my executables will open his; on the contrary, when I click on an icon or similar function (as in the start menu), I'm inclined to the screen 'open with... ». I noticed that most often, if I run the program as administrator, it is likely to work without having to manually find the file - still a bit tedious however.

I'm assuming that since I was recently hit by the virus which is a fake Windows Security Center, something my registry has also been hit (take into account the fact that I'm not savvy computer in the slightest). It happened on my user account initial and rather than take action on the right, then, I decided that I would use the other account that I had to install a program better anti-virus (Norton provided ISP) than the one I had been using (the two admin). At that point, I had finished all my activity moved to the new account and it worked very well until the virus had one possessing this account as well - delete on the first user account seemed to have deleted only the effects of my account but still affected everything I did after that. This time, I went and deleted all accounts and checked to ensure that it is not at all. After getting rid of the virus, it's the same thing: none of my .exe files will open without using the monitor "open with...". ». I'm not really sure what action to take from here, I have not done much to remedy the situation, and I'm going right through the screen of "open with...". "to get to what whatever - so any suggestions or help would be very appreciated.

    Keypoints:

    • .exe files are not open (However, in some cases, the "Run as Administrator" option overrides it)
    • recently hit with (deleted) and fake Windows Security Center virus ; That's when the .exe is no longer
    • is not much in terms of addressing this problem, do not know what to do with regard to the question of if my situation calls for something specific

I tried to cover everything that seemed important to address; However, if there is more need information, let me know. I am about average in terms of computer navigation and therefore my understanding of what many of these commands, functions and files is a bit Basic.

    Thank you! :)

Thanks for the very comprehensive post. Run the Doug Knox fix (that isn't a .exe that you can do this).

  • Problem the multifaceted - Security Center does not respond / in IE8 Google searches are redirected / cannot attach files to MSN emails (browser blocks) HELP!

My problem is two (or three) times; Windows Security arrested Esentials closed and not would again be turned on; Windows Security Center is disabled and will not respond to all the methods of the market; IE 8 sends all Google search clicks to redirect pages and makes the back browser arrow almost impossible to use. E-mail MSN will not accept all attachments - blocks the browser window.  I uninstalled Security Essentials and reinstalled nothing doesn't.  Have gone to Spybot and Adaware and installed these programs and run them to "clean" the everything unwanteds but re-boots of a Security Center right back. No idea at all what to whether on programs related to the re - search on Google.  Uninstalled and installed the final license, two of them I had to Norton 360.  This program after hours of in-depth analysis has nothing found was not in the line of virus, worm, or whatnot.  Help! It's maddening.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.

    Hi ChazboK,

    1. are you able to send attachments to other webmail?
    2. What is the size of the attachment that you join?

Note: you should never have more than one security program installed on the PC, providing active protection / scan. This can cause performance problems, system instability and may adversely affect the effectiveness of these two products to provide protection.

    Scenario 1:

I suggest you to disable any program of security on your computer and check if the browser redirects.

After reviewing the question you must reactivate the security on your computer program.

Note: run the computer without antivirus software or firewall is a potential threat to the computer; Be sure to activate security software after completing the troubleshooting steps and after identifying the problem.

    Step 2:

Second, the problem may be caused by an add-on corrupted in Internet Explorer. To confirm the same, run Internet Explorer in safe modules mode, and check if the problem persists.

Open Internet Explorer in mode without modules,

    a. click the Start button, click all programs.
    b. click on accessories.
    c. click System Tools.
    d. then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

If disabling all add-ons solves the problem, you can use the add-on Manager to disable all add-ons and then turn on modules only as needed. This will allow you to figure out which add-on is causing the problem.

Remove the damaged module and restart Internet Explorer normally and check if the problem reappears.

After you have used this process to determine which add-on causes errors, you can disable this add-on. Or, you can uninstall the software that installs the add-on. We also recommend that you contact the software vendor that provided the add-on for additional troubleshooting and support.

    Step 3:

If the method above does not resolve the problem, then I suggest you to perform an optimization of Internet Explorer on your computer and find the number.

    How to optimize Internet Explorer

    http://support.Microsoft.com/default.aspx/KB/936213

Warning: him reset Internet Explorer settings feature might reset security settings or privacy settings that you have added to the list of Trusted Sites. Reset the Internet Explorer settings can also reset parental control settings. We recommend that you note these sites before you use the reset Internet Explorer settings

    Scenario 2:

If you are able to send attachments to other webmail then, I suggest you to contact MSN support.
