Disadvantages with VMware Workstation (7) running on a server rack Xeon?

Hello

We intend to run VMware Workstation on my company (7) on a server rack Xeon based (the next generation of Xeon, i.e. Beckton/Nehalem-EX, with 8 cores, planned in the 1st quarter of 2010), and then access all of these virtual machine guests (based on Windows, both the server and desktop kind/flavor) by separate remote desktop connections direct to them.

I had a very hard time, trying to find out if there is (large or small) disadvantages with this approach?

We do not want to use Vmware Server for this, because its characteristics (for example with respect to snapshots) are lower than those of VMware Workstation, and nor do we want to use ESXi, because we always want to run Windows as a host on the server operating system.

Is VMware Workstation our best choice then, and there will be no significant disadvantage? I think it's as if there is a missing in the VMware portfolio, product i.e. namely I miss a server product with all the features of VMware Workstation, which still runs on a different host OS, what am I?

In any case, again, the main question is:

This plan of ours is stupid, and in this case how should we best solve it? Is there really an advantage by using VMware Server instead of VMware Workstation in this situation and in this case more exactly what?

Any input or answers will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

VMware Workstation on a good Windows installation will do you fine.

Ideal if you conclude that the MS-host in this day you don't need no matter what Antivirus or firewall.

Then such a facility will do what you expect.

I wouldn't consider VMserver - workstation surpasses VMserver my experience

  • Can anyone confirm if host vista can go to sleep when vmware workstation is running?

I posted a question on my vista machine not to fall asleep when vmware is running. I have all the answers.

Now, I would like to ask differently. Can anyone confirm or deny that your vista machine to sleep when vmware is running. Please indicate your vista edition and vmware workstation version. Please also note that VMware is running any active guest of the OSes. In my case, even if vmware won't be meme si vmware ne s' execute running no matter what guest OS, the machine won't go to sleep sleep once expired. Strange - if you just click on 'Start' - & gt;... - & gt; "' Sleep menu", the machine will sleep very well, even if vmware is running some OSes comments.

Chuck, I use Vista Business SP1 with VMware Workstation 6.5.2 and he falls asleep without problem with or without a running virtual machine.

You configure the duration of sleep through Control Panel > plan Options of food, then by setting it to this power, or are you using some sort of freeware Vista shutdown/sleep timer app?

  • Display with VMware Workstation 9 and Enterprise of Windows 8 comments bug

    Hello

I just installed VMware Workstation 9.

I created and installed a VM of Windows 8 Enterprise comments.

Everything works fine, except that when I go to the Windows 8 settings via bar charm (not via the desktop...), the display setting menu is occasionally screwed up!

This problem appeared just after I installed the VMware Tools in the guest OS. Before that, there was no display problem. Believe me, I've taken care of that by testing entirely.

My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. My processor is an Intel Core i7 870 (4 cores) and I have 8 GB of memory. My graphics card is an AMD ATI 5850 with the latest drivers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS: This is not one type of bug in time. I can repeat this every time I have to create a virtual machine Windows 8 Enterprise comments. The problem was also there with VMware Workstation 8. My guess is that VMware tools are buggy, at least with certain type of graphics compared to Windows 8...

  • NAT with VMWare Workstation 9-Urgent problems

    Hello

Try to use NAT in VMware Workstation 9 and am lost in my VM connection.

But when I use the network bridge, it works very well.

Is someone can you please help me solve?

I tried reinstalling VMware workstation for all n No.. times and restored the settings of the Virtual Network Editor as well.

    Help, please!

It seems that the client does not receive a DHCP address? Assuming that the virtual network adapter in the virtual machine settings is 'connected' (which, I guess, because you said Bridged works very well), you can check if there is a problem with the installation. Please run services. MSC (or net start from the command line) to see what VMware services are running on the host computer.

  • Problem with VMWare Workstation combo, .vhd virtual drives and physical disks in the sector of size 4K?

    All,

I suspect something wrong with some of my virtual machines.  I have been using these virtual machines for a while, and I see some weird behaviour recently.

I see a lot of corruption in the virtual hard disk (.vhd based).  CHKDSK automatically gets performed many large files such as Oracle datafiles get damaged etc...  It all seems quite random and inconsistent, but I am using .vhd virtual machines in VMWare Workstation for years without problem.  This problem is new, and hard drives are basically unstable.

I * think * (and I'm totally off base) that is perhaps the issue with my new external hard drives.  These discs have a 4 KB sector size, without e512.  Thanks to this architecture of hard drive, don't mount not the tools of Microsoft or manupulate .vhd files on these disks.  The questions seem to go away if I switch to vmdk or switch to the physical hard disk size-one-sector 512kb.  Because errors are not compliant, that I don't really have a way to document/prove that is the case, but it seems to be.

I use version 9.0.0 on Windows 7 Workstation, and the guest is Windows Server 2008R2.

    My question is:

    (1) what meaning?

    (2) how I prove/document, since it is a contradiction?

    (3) is this a known problem?

(Btw, switching HDD's vmdk is not an option in our case due to an obscure legal agreement with Microsoft.  I have to distribute my VMs in vhd format, even if they are designed to run on VMWare...)

    -> Adam

These discs have a 4 KB sector size, without e512.

(I've highlighted "without e512" in "BOLD" to key in my answer to the host operating system.)

    -L'OS is Windows 7 Enterprise

According to the political support for the 4 K sector hard drives in Windows, Windows 7 does not support the native 4 K (logical 4 k sector size) but it does not support Advanced Format or 512th (size of logical sector physical and 512 bytes of 4 K) and that is can be the question.

  • 40 users with vmware workstation virtualization

    short version

    1. is there a tiny linux distro or another way to run workstation or player without having to start a host bulky all OS?  I would like to than most of the resources that will be displayed at the operating system PROMPT in my computer or player, but I can give him only what the host operating system is not relaxing, right?

2 is it possible using startup scripts or similar for the workstation (or reader) run as soon as the host OS, boots and open a certain virtual machine mode full-screen, to make the user experience more like using a non virtualized desktop computer?

    / short version

    long version

We need to standardize workstations XP users and decided to do it using virtualization.  We're not really big enough (40 users) to benefit from the view, or be able to afford.

We would like to use VMWare workstation to create a virtual master we could do get out for users instead of having to do a format/reload every time they break a system.

However, I want the user experience to be as transparent as possible for end users (of which most is not technical at ALL) the idea of "boot from an XP host, open desktop (or reader), then open their 'real' workstation vm is too much for them, really.

Also, I personall dislikes the idea to run a full blown (XP OS) to host VMWare Player, to host an OTHER OS full blown.  I want to give on the guest virtual computer system resources as well.

    / long version

    1. Yes - it's possible. See it in action http://sanbarrow.com/moa24/videos/kiosk/kiosk.html

2 Yes - XP for example you can set up the shell. Change explorer.exe to a command that starts with a VM specified in modepleinecran vmplayer

    version of Workstation 6.5.0 - 118166

I have two virtual machines W2003R2 and W2008r2 in a physical host with Windows XP Edition family.

The network configuration is in Bridge mode the two.

    No dynamic IP for both.

    Physical PC1

    W2003R2: W2008R2

    IP: 172.17.0.1 IP: 172.17.0.2

    Mask: 255.255.0.0 mask: 255.255.0.0

    No gateways.

    DNS: 172.17.0.205 DNS: 172.17.0.205

And a virtual W2003R2 on another physical machine.

    Physics PC2

    W2003R2: (is a domain controller)

    Mask: 255.255.0.0

    No gateways.

    DNS: 172.17.0.205

Two physical machines have connectivity, no problem, Pc1 and PC2.

Virtual machines have two connectivity with DC IP 172.17.0.205 and also DC for two machines, nslookups works OK.

There is no ping between machines on the physical PC1 comments, well not exactly I have ping of W2008 in W2003 but not for W2008 W2003, there is no firewall and no antivirus, no, default configuration, I tried to uninstall W2008 and install the other W2003 and no results, so there is no problem of OS Windows.

I'm trying to change the configuration of the network, tried to bridge, host, nat, custom, I tried vmware workstation version 6.0 and 6.5.3 and don't find any solution.

    Any ideas?

Is there any antivirus running on the guest operating system?

someone has already tried the "LAN Segments" feature of VMWare Workstation 7?

    I have the following configuration:

    -3 LAN segments

2 machines are configured to be together in a local Network Segment (LAN 2) with the following parameters:

    -The name "LAN 2.

    -Bandwidth: "leased line T1 (1.544 Mbit/s)

    -1544 kbit/s

    -0,0% packet loss

Although I configured this team I always > connection 100 Mbps between these two VM´s. I´ve tried transferring a files 35 MB of a VM to another using a fileshare.

Someone at - there experience this problem in VM7? Do anyone know if this is a known bug?

    Ah--along the way. I use build 203739

    Thanks in advance,

You turn on the team through the power team orders or you turn on the VMs system individually?  There is a known bug where network segment settings do not work for the latter.

  • Student needs help with VMware Workstation

I downloaded the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Workstation Machine virtual VMWare.  I unzipped the zip for Joan/Document/Monordinateurvirtuel

I do not see an executable file or whatever it is or under programs open.  Help

    The instruction States:

After that the file has been decompressed, run VMWare Workstation 5 or VMWare Player, open the Virtual Machine, then turn on.

It's my first Linux + classes.  I can't understand how to start the VMWare Player or VMWare Workstation 5.   I have Microsoft Windows Vista.  Advice would be appreciated as my next task is to configure SLES work in VMWorkstation.

The virtual machine that you downloaded is just that, a virtual machine, not an executable. You need to install/run VMware Player or Workstation and run, and then open the virtual machine.

  • Problems with VMware Workstation upgrade version 6.0 and 6.5

  • Toshiba button Support do not work with VMware Workstation

    Hi all

for all people having the same problem - * Support Button Toshiba do not work after the installation of VMware Workstation.*

    Short solution:
After the installation of vmware workstation 6.x or 7 - the default setting is "Disable Autorun on the host". (you can find it in: Edit-> preferences-> devices). Release the hook and restart. After the reboot, the buttons should be working.

    The long version:
Support Button Toshiba uses the Windows function "MobilePC" - > "Hotstart". HotStart only works when the autostart feature is not disabled (the value of registry key: + HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Po licies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun + has the value 0xFF). VMware is the default to disable Autorun of CD/DVD. Turn on the autorun, restart the Qosmio and Hotstart (and also Toshiba button support) works very well. That's the problem.

    Thanks for the solution. :)

  • WinRunner license with VMware Workstation

Evaluate us VMware Workstation 10.0 and we try to install Winrunner on a virtual machine but the Winrunner trying to get out to the network on the virtual machine to find the license competition, every time, we have created (OS Win 7), installation is suspended. The error indicates the installation Winrunner is unable to find the license on the network.

Verified that the network is in place and works very well. Check that the license exists on the network (installed on another computer to test using a ghost image). Anyone got any ideas on why installing Winrunner can not find the license?

    Concerning

Your guest VM is configured to use NAT or Bridged network mode?  Not sure if it would be serious, but it is possible - if it's NAT - the license service is unable to return to the virtual machine.

  • Need help with VMware Player to run!

I've been using VMware Player 7.1 successfully for some time, but my drive hard host started making noise, so I installed a new SSD drive as drive C on the host computer.  My old hard drive installation was 8.1 for Windows 64-bit, but needed to be cleaned, so I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 64 bit on my new SSD for the host.  My guest OS (8.1 64-bit Windows) has been installed on drive E, then I'm not touching this player.  I then installed VMware Player 7.1 and all is well.  However, when I now run VMware Player 7.1 and try to open my (8.1 Windows 64-bit) guest OS, he says now that the Intel VT - x is disabled.  I've never touched the BIOS at all, but to check I went into the BIOS and Intel Virtualization is always on because it has been.  My system is a motherboard ASUS Sabertooth with an i7 processor and 16 GB of ram.

So I rechecked everything in the BIOS and made sure the virtualization is enabled.  What else can I do to get VMware Player 7.1 running?  Help, please!

The log file created when I tried to run the guest operating system is attached.

    Thank you

    Abby

It is indeed strange that there is a difference with no changes to the BIOS. In any case, other messages in the forums, it seems like some antivirus/end point protection applications can cause these issues (see, for example, binary translation is incompatible with the long mode). You have already installed this application?

It might be interesting to see vmware.log from the virtual machine HARD disk.

  • Recommendations for his new laptop of VMware Workstation 7 run machines virtual esx

I'm about to buy a new laptop and I'm looking for something that is reasonably priced and that will be able to help me study for the new vcp tests by installing esx4 inside the workstation.

If you know any good portable that won't break the Bank that will work for sure for this, I would really appreciate your advice.

    Thanks for your help.

I have the p9600 (2.66 GHz with 6 MB of cache) in mine.  You can just call and order and ask anything you want.  Sometimes (as in my case) they will have processors that are not yet listed yet.  I think the max is just at 3 GHz.  I usually run 3 VMs at a time, or I'll run my team (4 virtual machines) and another 1 or 2 with them.  I used for my RHCT practice stuff and it will use for my VCP and MCITP Enterprise Administrator practice as well.  I had with Vista x 64, but put Windows 7 Ultimate x 64 on it when he came in (MSDN).
