Defrag never really finished because the files are handled constantly
by the user. This can be seen by the fact that, after have defragmented once,

So, rather than having the user to decide on a routine of defragmentation, Vista does everything
in the background, the applicant any intervention from the user. In this way, the
hard drive is kept in good condition constantly instead of occasionally and
Once again when the user decides that performance is affected by

  • Disk Defragmenter does not not (opening) in Windows 7

After installing Windows 7 (Home Premium 64-bit), Disk Defragmenter does not work, Windows 7 menu, or by Accessories > system tools, or by a simple click on the .exe. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the detailed response.

The problem was in fact Norton 360 3.5, which is supposed to work with Windows 7, but who would not run its own Recovery Disk Defrag. I had a suervisor to Norton Commander remotely the computer to solve the problem, but all he managed to do was restart my computer so that I got the dreaded black screen saying "this is not a genuine copy of Windows 7". I solved that by starting in safe mode, using System Restore and then remove Norton (forever! No problem with Trend Micro). Disk Defrag eventually gave me a message that the parameters had been taken over by another program and allowed me to delete these settings. He then worked.

  • Disk Defragmenter does not open in Windows 7

Since I started using Norton, Disk Defragmenter does not work and my computer is very slow. How can I me Defrag to work and to speed up my computer?

    There are 2 issues here:

    1 Defragmenter does not
    2 PC is slow.

If the disk is very fragmented, it can cause the PC to run poorly, so let's handle defrag first and then we can look at the additional steps to speed it up.

There are several reasons why the built-in Defragmenter may not work correctly:

    1. the disk is too full (you need at least 15% free space, sometimes 20%). Solution: Delete files unnecessary and programs until you have more than 20% free space.

    2. the disc is damaged and must be repaired. Solution:
    a. open "My computer" and right-click on the drive that you want to disable frag.
    b. Select 'Properties' and click on 'tools '.
    c. Select "Check now" to check the drive for errors.
    d. Select the two options and click on 'start '.

(This can take time and can restart the PC so that it can do the check at boot time. Be patient and let it complete).

    3. There may be malware on the PC
Solution - run the Antivrus, then Antispyware scans (can take a long time if ever made. Be patient):
    a. analysis of the entire system with the anti-virus & manage everything that exists;
    b. analysis of the entire system with Anti-Spyware & manage everything that exists;

    4. Disk Defragmenter can be altered, needing a system restore to fix it. Solution:

    a. start - all programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore (click here to open);
    b. Select a good restore point before you start having problems with Disk Defragmenter.
    c. start the restore process and let an end (descriptive name of something restore operation as "Repair Defrag").

    5. There are other programs that run the Defragmenter interruption integrated. Solution:
    a. close all running programs.
    b. If you think there may be some programs that run in the background.
    c. press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and
    d. Select "start Task Manager".
    e. under the 'Applications' tab, you will find a list of all running applications - you can close these by selecting "end task."

    6. If still no luck, try disabling the screen saver when you run Disk Defrag (you should very well leave the system only when running the built-in defragmentation utility).

    7. If still no go, try to run the defragmenter in Mode without failure. If she runs, something interferes with it in standard mode and stalking the interference may not be easy. Note: Some versions of Windows 7 disables the ability to run the Defragmenter built-in in safe mode. If disabled, it will say when you try to start it in safe mode.

    8. Disk Defragmenter may no longer be on the system or is damaged while it needs a re - install. Solution: Reinstall the built-in function.

There are several ways to re - install the built-in Defragmenter:

    A:
    a. open the menu 'start '.
    b. type '% Windir%\Inf' in the 'Search' box and press 'Enter '.
    c. in the window that opens, find the file named "dfrg.inf.
    d. right-click on "dfrg.inf" and "install".

    B:
    a. go into "start > run" on your computer.
    b. Type "rundll32.exe setupapi, InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132% windir%\inf\dfrg.inf" and press "Enter."
    3. click 'OK' to make the program automatically reinstall itself.

    C:
    a. go to start > all programs > Accessories > right click on command prompt > select 'run as administrator '.
    b. at the command prompt, type "regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll" and press "enter."
    c. type 'regsvr32 dfrgui.dll' and press 'Enter '. This will reinstall the missing Defragmenter files.

Most of the problems will be resolved in #6 above, but if not and if your windows installation is otherwise works well, consider downloading a free trial of a commercial defragmentation tool rather than the drastic measures to restore the frame-s functionality.

Third-party programs are more robust and many work in the background, so you can use your PC during defragmentation.
Most third party programs offer a free, fully functional trial (better ones are for 30 days). Install one of them allows you to disable built-in and if you decide to uninstall, removal will replace the built-in function, repaired several times in the process: it's worth a try...

b, readers to defragment your drive.

The PC should improve speed, as the above steps are performed. Here are additional steps to optimize PC for speed:

    10. make sure that your PC has as much memory (RAM) as possible.
Solution - Know how much RAM your PC:
    a. go to start > right click on 'Computer' > properties
    b. this list the type of processor and speed and how much RAM is installed, and what version of windows is running and the Service Pack. Sign it, because it may be necessary later.
    c. search your PC name and model # followed by 'memory' and see what is listed. This tells you what type of memory you need and how many "Sticks" your PC will accept.
    d. get the maximum amount of memory your computer can contain and install it. Search for "how to install memory on one (your model name and #)" to find videos on how to do this if necessary.

    11. make sure that the registry is clean.
Solution: Get and run a good registry cleaner.
    a. check to see if there is a registry cleaner already in the system;
    b. otherwise, download CCleaner here: http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/
    c. run the registry cleaner until he finds and corrects any errors.

Note: Be careful with registry cleaners as there are many autour with new ones coming all the time with some would have been causing more damage than they help. Use a proven reliability.

CCleaner is one of the originals and very safe.

Once all this is done, your PC will be in the best possible shape.

Good luck and let us know if you have any questions (ask your questions and I will then answer best I can).

PS: If after all that, the PC is still not doing well, repair may involve repairing the windows installation and possibly re - install windows itself. These aren't simple solutions. If so, indicate if and guidelines can be provided.

  • Regular disk defragmentation does not intervene. Computer can be in mode "sleep" during the defragmentation?

Disk defragmentation. will take place every week at 01:00.  Computer is in "standby" at that time.  Is this why disk frag does not happen every week?  When I defragment manually I have to confirm the status of administrator... it would have something to do with it?  I use Windows 7 Home Premium.

    Hello Lauren,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.

You did it any significant hardware or change software on the computer before this problem?

I understand that disk defragmentation does not work as expected. When this works even if your computer is in "sleep". Therefore, I would suggest trying the following steps and check if the problem persists.

    Method 1:

Step 1: Check if the Disk Defragmenter service is running.
    a. click Start and type services.msc in the search box.
    (b) in the Services window, double-click the Disk Defragmenter service.
    c. check if the Disk Defragmenter service is set to Automatic Started .

Step 2: The question may arise also because of the intervention of third-party software. So, I suggest clean boot of the system and check if the scheduled defragmentation works.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: See "how to reset the computer to start normally after a boot minimum troubleshooting" to prepare the computer to start as usual after a repair. "

    Method 2:

Try to set the Defragmenter to wake up the computer from the mode "sleep" and check if it works.

    1. Click Start, type taskschd.msc and press enter.
    2. In the left pane, click the arrow next to the Task Scheduler Library, Microsoftand Windows to expand the folders.
    3. Click the defrag folder.
    4. In the center pane, right-click on ScheduledDefrag and click Properties.
    5. Click the general tab.
    6. Check the box run with the highest privileges .
    7. Click the Conditions tab.
    8. Check the box to enable the computer to run this task and click OK.
    9. Close Task Scheduler.

Check if the Defragmenter works to wake up the computer from the mode "sleep" as expected.

Why is it good to prevent fragmentation?

Basically, it significantly increases life expectancy of your hard drive (especially since you don't have to leave the system on all night - a much 'greener' agricultural practice), not to mention it also increases the performance of the system.

I've upgraded to windows 7 ultimate x 86 a few months on my Toshiba. Form below-
