Display disk utility are in a conflict of space available

I have notice that only 15% of my 1 TB drive is available. Disk utility displays 474 GB available, but the bar of 163. When I read the information on Mac HD, it is said 469,89 GB available. What is going on? What can I do to resolve the conflict?

Also when I hang up my iMac running os x yosemite on the hard drive can be used and seems to work very well.

I tried to reformat the hard disk, but it has failed it is still not recognized on my mac pro book

    Hello amartnez,

Thank you for using communities of Apple Support.

From your post, I see that your drive external hard seagate was pulled from the socket during backup with Time Machine, and now it is not recognized by your MacBook Pro. I know how it is important to ensure that you are able to connect your external drive to your Mac. I have something I want you to try.

Because the external hard drive seems to be working on another computer (iMac), please try a different USB port on your MacBook Pro and see if it recognizes the external hard drive on the desktop and in disk utility. If so, that means you have a problem with this specific USB port on the MacBook Pro.

    See you soon!

  • How can I display the partitions hidden in the new disk utility?

Yosemite (10.10) and previous versions of disk utility, I was able to activate the debug mode display the partitions hidden recovery via a Terminal command.  However, in El Capitan (10.11) the terminal command does nothing.  So, how display/display the partitions hidden in El Capitan?

I am using a disc external HARD for a diagnostic tool and I don't want the scores of recovery on the outside so that I have save space.

    in Terminal type

    diskutil list

This command is always the same in ElCapitan.

  • Why disk utility displays different amount of space used?

    Hey everybody,

I have a Macbook Air with 120 GB of space and OS X El Capitan 2014. Utility disk say I used 27,96 GB but the bar graph divided above say I used about 44 GB of space. Why is this?

As you can see utility disk State 27.96 but above all, I have used that in the bar graph divided it say I have used over 40 GB of apps. How is that possible? I certainly don't have 40 GB worth of apps!

Please, do not rely on this information in Spotlight display. It will be accurate if you have recently indexed the reader: Spotlight - how to re - index folders or volumes - Apple Support. Always count on what disk utility screens or read the information.

  • Make the disk image using disk utility and the message "Apple_HFS: 0" is displayed

I'm doing a disk image to try to work on that later. This is an image of a failed disk drive. Some areas can only be read, I know and the process takes a long time because of this, so I'm willing to be patient.

I get messages in the disk utility window that says "Apple_HFS: 0" and "Creation of image xxxx.dmg.

The disc has about 700 GB. I started it about 20 hours ago, and the blue bar is about 5% of the way, so not much happened.

I fear that the message "Apple_HFS: 0" means that the disk image is not made. I am concerned about the part "0". I don't know what that means.

I don't want to do it for days and days and find that there not to make a disc image all this time.

I realize that the fact that the external drive is damaged (probably damage) means that this process will take longer than normal. I am willing to leave it for a week so that he can make a disk image. But not more than a week because then it is not worth my time.

So my question is: does the message ' Apple_HFS: 0 "means something bad, or that the message normally during this procedure?

Apart from this message and the message "Xxxx.dmg imaging", there is no other message.

I think I'm making progress because the bar has moved since I started the process. For a long time I couldn't see a bar at all. And today, after spending the night, there is a small bar, as I said, about 5% complete. But it's very slow. It would take at least a week for the disk image to be made. I just want to know if the messages that I see are normal or not.

  • Major problem of disk utility, think I have bricked my MB :(

    MacBook Pro 2014

Please help with this, I don't know how I managed to spoil it. What can I do to fix? Did a clean install and tried to erase the disc. Yes I know I'm a total fool... to try to create a new empty but still fails with etc - 61. I'm out of my depth here. IM myself kicking. At the moment I have installed OS x on an external HARD drive which I use to this post. IM so afraid, I broke my computer, my mother will kill me!

I have a 16 GB USB key where it remains the way to using that? I'm out of my depth here.

    Hello MSC7XWDC,

Thank you for using communities of Apple Support.

If I understand your message correctly you are trying to do a wipe and installing Mac OS X on your computer, but you're stuck on the part when you create a partition for it.  Because the partition has been erased, you will have to create this boot partition following the instructions below.  Once this is done, you can go through the installation process.

    Partition a boot disk

If you want to partition a disk that you will use to start up your Mac, follow these steps.

Partitioning a disk erases all files on the disc. Don't forget to copy the files you want to keep to another disk before the partition.

You can specify the number of partitions and the size of each of them. If you want to use your Mac OS X startup disk partition, don't forget, it is large enough to install the Mac OS X software and applications, and the files that you will use.

    1. If you are partitioning an external drive, make sure that it is connected to your computer and proceed to step 5.

If you are partitioning of the disk that you used to start your Mac, print this page so that you can refer to it later. To print this page, select print from the Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear).

    2. Choose the Apple menu > restart. Press the command (⌘) keys and R as your computer restarts.

When you see a white screen with an Apple logo in the Middle, you can release the keys.

    3. In the Mac OS X Utilities window, select disk utility and then click on continue.
    4. Select the disk you want to partition, click Partition.
    5. Choose the number of partitions in the pop-up menu Configuration of Volume.
    6. Click on each partition and type a name for this, choose a format and type a size. You can also drag the separator between the partitions to change their sizes. If the name of the partition has an asterisk next to it, it is shown larger than actual size in order to display his name clearly.
    7. If you want to use a partition as a Mac OS X startup disk, click Options, and then choose it the GUID partition scheme.
    8. Click on apply.

After you partition a disk, an icon for each partition of disk appears in disk utility and in the sidebar of Finder Windows.

  • Cannot use disk utility to create the partition of the free space on the external USB drive.

I have a red 3 TB Western Digital drive in a USB hard drive docking station.

The reader is GPT, and I have two volumes on it (a single volume is "Microsoft reserved", another volume is NTFS).

The other part of my drive is 1.5 TB of free space. I want to create a new partition with free space so that I can put backups Time Machine encrypted external hard disk.

I checked free space on the drive with my Windows machine:

    DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt

    -------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---

    Disk 0 Online 167 GB 20 GB

    Disk 1 Online 465 GB 0 B *

    Disk 2 Online 2794 GB 1526 GB *

    DISKPART> select disk 2

Disk 2 is now the selected disk.

    DISKPART> list part

    Partition ### Type Size Offset

    ------------- ---------------- ------- -------

    Partition 1 Reserved 128 MB 17 KB

    Partition 2 Primary 1267 GB 129 MB

    DISKPART>

DiskPart displays 2 partitions - a 128 MB and the other GB 1267 with 1526 MB of free space.

I took the hard drive of my MacBook Pro running OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 and pulled towards the high disk utility, but for some reason, that it does not resemble the disk utility it is to see the free space, so I can't create a new volume.

    Here are a few screenshots:

... of the physical disk in disk utility (notice how it doesn't seem be all unallocated space on the disk to create a new volume):

... of the NTFS volume in disk utility:

... of information for the drive in disk utility:

... of the partitioning settings page. Notice how the sign is grayed out (I can't create another partition):

I'm a new Mac user. My company recently gave me a Mac, so the first thing I want to do is to create a new partition on this external USB drive to put backups Time Machine figures on it.

In the research I did find a way to do it on a mac computer without erasing the drive and starting over. But you can go to your windows computer and partition the free space of disks. Then use the mac to set the free space as mac os extended journaled. Here's what I found. http://www.PCWorld.com/article/2066191/how-to-partition-a-hard-drive.html the only other way would be to copy the file on the external drive, somewhere, so you can delete it and re partition for windows and mac. Then reinstall windows files. I'm not familiar with windows systems.

  • File types do not appear in disk utility

Disk utility displays the total amount of space used, but is no longer present file types, for example, applications, pictures, audio, etc.  This is the new standard for ElCapitan or a problem?

You are looking on the disk, not the Volumes (Partitions) on the disk.

    Hi joecuv,

The error is returned by app installer from Apple OS X uses to extract and install the .pkg package files.  I'm not too familiar with the inner workings of the application of the program installation, and after some searching found a user on the Apple Discussion site with a similar error, when trying to install iTunes. This user has managed to install iTunes after the safe boot mode.  When booting in SafeMode Apple prevents some startup items and other third party charging software and performs a check to start the drive.  This could allow the utility to install extract and install the software successfully, therefore, I recommend trying this approach.  It may or may not work.

Please read the complete instructions for use and/or print them before continuing.

    1. Download and save the installation program offline posted at the bottom of the Installation problems | Flash Player | Mac page in the section "problems".
    2. Disconnect all wired devices that are not essential to the functioning of your computer.
    3. Restart your computer in safe mode, see OS X Yosemite: start in safe modeand log on to the user account with the problem.
      • Start in safe mode will take more time as normal and things look/will not work the same when connected (by graphic example may seem different, wireless/network may not work, etc.).
    4. Proceed with the installation of Flash Player using the installer downloaded in step 1 offline.

If Flash Player is installed when it is started in safe mode restart as usual (on the same account used in step 3) and ensure that it works in normal mode.

    • Once connected, launch the browser and go to the help page at step 1.
    • Click on the "Check now" button  The widget will display which version of Flash Player is installed.

If it works, you'll want to determine which startup program or a third-party software interferes with the installation utility so that you can properly install other programs in the future.

If you get the different, or even the application setup error when you try to install in safe mode, I recommend you contact Apple for assistance that the error comes from their utility application.

Please post back here if this did or didn't work for you.

    Thank you.

  • Can I create a recovery bootable USB through disk utility?

My HARD drive is dying, I can't access my Macintosh HD partition anymore and I can't reinstall OS because I SMART errors. Before the format and reinstall the attempt to load slow my computer, random errors, etc. So I definitely think that the HARD drive is near death. My plan is to replace my HDD for a Virgin SSD, I perform this task several times on computers of the victory but for MAC, I wonder how I will load the new OS. Can I make a bootable USB with the recovery partition, but on a USB key tools? Unofrtunately I have more available Mac to create the USB bootable through itunes.

My computer is the MacBook Pro (13-inch mid 2010), I have also all original packaging somewhere, if there is a CD that I can use, I certainly can get too.

    Any advice?

    Thank you!

Apple have this to do a USB installation...

Create an installer for OS X - Apple support bootable

Another option is to use the diskmakerx.com application

You must have the OS installer downloaded to make these methods of work is probably not practice on your failed drive.

Both of these options are to run a 'normal' operating system too. The recovery partition is not 'normal '.

Another option is to use the Internet recovery mode if your Mac supports...

Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support

On macOS recovery - Apple Support

Use wired ethernet for best results, since it will download a bootable OS & then download the installer of the OS also.

I suspect you have the update of the firmware installed to add this feature if it has been updated over the last 3 years

You may be able to generate a score of alternative recovery to another disk (such as a USB key) If you want to just "compensation of base OS.

OS X: on Recovery Disk Wizard - Apple Support

A last solution would be to clone your drive failing on an external drive (or use the new SSD in a proper case). That can be done in the modes of recovery via disk utility. Basically, you use a feature to "restore" to clone one volume to another. (I don't see clear instructions for the moment so ask if you want to pursue this option).

  • Disk utility first aid operation was unsuccessful and iMac freezes when it is reloaded

iMac Intel Core (2010) 320 GB 4 GB of RAM.  Running OS 10.11.6

Started computer, white screen appeared with the icon of a folder with an exclamation mark in the folder.  Nothing else to do, so restarted iMac, hold down the command and 'r' to open disk utility.

Ran first aid, recommended "incorrect block are 1172 instead of 601.  File system check or repair a failure.  Operation failed. "" "First aid running not a, if possible save the data on this volume.  Click OK to continue. »

Discount to zero is successful, but screen is frozen with no access to the hard drive.  I can't open the preferences system due to frost.

The circle of rainbow of spinning of death continues to run so I am not able to get any other repair mechanism.

Anyone have any ideas on how to proceed?  The iMac is obviously not able to boot to the hard drive.

This probably means the HD has failed and must be replaced. How you proceed, is to take the computer to your local Apple authorized provider who can help replace the disk and get you back in business. If you are not aware of any local could be held, please click the following link to start to find one close to you.

  • Problem with disk utility...

After upgrading to Mac OS Sierra custom poster disk utility looks like more detailed information about what is on my Macintosh HD, only a blue strip for the used area of the disc and the white for the empty area. Any suggestions?

Try to fix permissions of drive with disk - Apple Support utility

Ant then reset the management system (SCM) controller on your Mac - Apple Support

  • Disk utility reports hurt his stats in recovery mode

I have a 2 TB HD in my iMac which is only about 10% full.  Disk utility reports 1.81 TB free, just like in the finder get info tab.  My Time Machine backups are about 190 GB in size as well.  All of this is consistent.  When that I start by pressing command-R however, disk utility reports that the HD is full.

I bought a new SSD and that you want to replace with the SSD HD, so I need to restore to the SSD HD, then Exchange.  The SSD is only 500GB, then disk utility fails restore - he thinks that there is not enough room.

Anyone encountered this, or there at - it another way to clone the HD for the SSD?

I have a late 2009 iMac 11.1 El Capitan 10.11.6 running with an i7 2.8 and 12 GB of RAM and 2 TB HD.  (Originally, he arrived with Snow Leopard).

    Thanks for any help.

I would like to give CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper a try.

  • Disk utility says Everything is Fine, when it's not

I am trying to understand what the point of disk utility. I checked (several times) my boot drive (SSD) and a second internal HARD disk, disk utility says it all goes well and nothing in need of repair. Meanwhile, I can say drives are certainly * not * ok since I get poor system performance, and the HARD disk is sprayed randomly when I access/copy some files.

I went and got the SMART utility and Disk Warrior, SMART utility written my boot drive is FAILING and my HARD drive has FAILED.

I am now under DW on it, but I'm pretty annoyed that utility disk is essentially useless to see if there are problems with the discs...

Disk utility and disk warrior can only repair the files in the directory, they are unable to repair a disk that is physically / mechanically failing.

  • Cannot restore the files from hard drive damaged in disk utility

    Questions

    1. can I save my files/fix this problem without having to restore via disk utility?

    2. What am I doing wrong / I can do to restore correctly on an external hard drive via disk utility?

    Background

Last week when I turned my MacBook Pro 2012 I got stuck on the gray login screen. The progress bar moves very, very slowly and when he finished my laptop spontaneously restarted and repeated the same thing over and over again. Here's what I tried to do so far:

-Start in SafeMode: does not work

-Extended Apple Diagnostics/Apple Hardware Test: test results: no problem found

-Utility (recovery and valorisation of the Internet) disk: disk hard Mac (Apple HDD) and Recovery (partition) HD are not damaged, but the partition disk0s2 is (created after a failure; a year not logged - if it matters) and in 'check' and 'fix' the latter I get inconsistent error messages.

    Disk utility error messages

Most often, I get this error:

The volume disk0s2 was found damaged and must be repaired. Error: This disc needs to be repaired. Click on the ERD.

    Stopped disk utility check "disk0s2."

Disk0s2 volume could not be repaired after 3 attempts.

Error: Disk utility can't repair the disk. Save as many files as possible, reformat the drive and restore your files packed around the top.

I also received this error message once:

Wrong number of extended attributes (it should be 730585 instead of 730589)

Wrong number of access control lists (there are 1364 instead of 1368)

Save the files to external hard drive?

Before that I didn't even used/accessed Time Machine.  I have a new HDD external, formatted for Mac. I created two partitions: backup and Time Machine (so I can start using it once I have find this current issue). When I try to restore disk0s2 external hard disk I get an error restore failed (252 or 254, I think).

When you drive is damaged, it is extremely difficult to make progress.

I recommend the lessee a spare drive in an external enclosure and install MacOS on it again. Then boot from that and you are back in business. You can use the full power of Mac OS AND additional utilities to recover your files.

More 350 000 files on your damaged disc are Mac OS - and those that can be installed in replicas of prefect by a new installation on a new drive. You can't Brute force 'all' copy of a damaged disc. What you want back damaged drive is not Mac OS X files - you want YOUR files. They are stored in the Directory/users in a folder with your short user name. with additional utilities, you can simply copy this directory, or use a recovery as data rescue program to get individual files.
