What information to post in the Windows Update forum

Windows Update forum is one of the three forums that doesn't have different forums for different versions of Windows (Internet Explorer and the game are the others).  With this in mind, we ask that you postat LEAST the following information.  If you don't know how to find some of the information and then post what you can and let us know that you need help to find information.

    Minimum information to validate:
Version of Windows and Service pack level. (Windows XP Home Edition, SP3; Vista Home Premium, SP1; Windows 7 Ultimate, etc...)
Post also if you use 32-bit or the 64 bit version of Windows.

Update the number of the last update installed before any problem.  If you do not know the number of update, then give the date that the update has been installed.  The number of updates update failed.

Error code updates failed or if you think an update caused a blue screen, give the blue screen error codes.

    Other information to validate:
Measures already taken to correct the problem and the results of the measures.

If the question is never happened before with other updates.

A few other useful parts are:
What program antivirus you use, if it is up-to-date, and there has never been any other installed antivirus program.
If your version of Windows has been upgraded from a previous version or if it came with (or clean installed with) the version you are currently using.

  • MSXML 4.0 sp2 (kb973688) ruined my PC!

Nothing opens once updated widows installed MSXML 4.0 sp2 (kb973688) 11/25/09. Unable to open Windows Update, network and sharing Center, Control Panel(sometimes in classic view it comes up), Microsoft OneCare, MSCONFIG... Tried UN-installing but just blocking the PC. Most things seem to go very well in Safe Mode, but can not uninstall mode without failure. Was able to stop all applications since the 1st commissioning noticed problem when Windows OneCare would give error that stopped running. Eventually noticed it was impossible to connect to any WiFi network. Eventually figured out that basically any Microsoft application opens upward. Was working fine before this installation, previous installation has been more than 2 months before. System Restore does not see any point prior to this installation.

    Hello

There seems to be a conflict with all the background are running programs. Try to perform a clean boot in safe mode and check if that helps.

Follow the steps in the article mentioned below to start in safe mode with network.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

If you are able to connect to the internet in safe mode with network try to download the utility Windows Installer Cleanup from the link below and try to remove the update from the computer and check if that helps.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/290301

Install the utility and run it in normal mode and then try to uninstall the update.

When on the desktop try to perform a clean boot and check that the program is causing the problem.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

The steps to perform a clean boot are given below:

1 log on to the computer using an account with administrator rights

    2. click on start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue

    3. on the general tab, click Selective startup, and then clear the check box load startup items. (The check box use the file Boot is not available.)

    4. on the Services tab, click to select the skin all the Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all

Note: Following this step lets services Microsoft continue to run. These services include networking, Plug-and-Play, record of events, error reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you can permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use with existing restore points system restore utility

Once you start office check if the problem persists, follow the steps in the article and find out which program is causing the problem.

For more information about the clean boot, follow the below given link:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

    1. click on start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue.

    2. on the general tab, click the Normal startup option, and then click OK.

    3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click on restart

    Hope this information is useful.

    Hello Alex Khristov,.

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.

I'd say run a SFC scan to see if there is any corrupt system files.

    Click Start

    Click on all programs

Click Accessories, and then right-click on the command prompt.

Select the Security tab and choose "Run as Administrator"

    Click on command prompt

    Type SFC/scannow.

It will scan and repair any damaged operating system files.

  • -MSXML 4.0 SP 2 files: it\ Program Files (86) \NTI\NTI Media Maker 9\Media Maker\msxml4.dll

I have this NTI Media Maker 9 on my laptop. But scan Kapersky puts it under the vulnerable third-party applications that says - MSXML 4.0 SP 2 files: it\ Program Files (86) \NTI\NTI.dll 9\Media Media Maker recommended to fix. Why is this? and what do I do

NTI Media Maker has included a copy of MSXML 4.0 in its own files, instead of using a copy of Windows. MSXML 4.0 SP2 is now obsolete. It does not update by Windows Update because it's in the wrong place.

It is unlikely that you are at risk of this but if you want to suppress the warning from Kaspersky, you can either

    • Uninstall NTI Media Maker 9 If you do not use.
    • Check with the NTI for a newer version which does not contain the obsolete MSXML
    • Install MSXML 4.0 SP3 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15697 by downloading and executing msxml.msi. Then run Windows Update to bring it up to date. MSXML4.dll in the Media Maker folder and rename it msxml4.old. Change the language first if you want. Unless he uses unusual methods, the program should find the msxml4.dll in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 and function normally. In the unlikely case where the program does not work, copy the files from msxml4 to SysWOW64 in the Movie Maker folder, replacing the files there.

I typed Kodak in search above to start section and checked my programs.

Instead do with msinfo32.exe to open system information.   Then, in the Environment\Startup software do a find, category searches only for Kodak
