Displays the icon is missing from Control Panel

I found an old post of 2009 here:

http://answers.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/Forum/windows_vista-desktop/my-display-icon-is-missing-from-my-control/c3a4d7c1-0149-4c41-BCBC-75ba11c6d99d

I have tried both suggestions described here, but neither one restored the icon display. I was wondering if anyone has ny other suggestions on what to try.

Hi bfogler,

In Vista, here's a possible solution: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/restore-missing-items-in-windows-vista-control-panel/.  It uses even specifically display as one of the examples to be restored.

Good luck!

  • Mail icon is missing from Control Panel, what is the file name?

I have Windows Vista SP1 (x 64) and for some reason any mail icon does not appear in my control panel.

I need to create an e-mail account to connect to the Exchange Server work and Outlook requires that I have do this applet of the Control Panel Mail so that Outlook is not running.

Error message Outlook says it cannot be done in Outlook e-mail account settings when I try to Outlook.

To be clear, this is not for Windows Mail.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you
    -Mike

P.S. of course all my other computers have the mail icon in the Control Panel, but not my only main :)!

Thank you guys, I got things market! :)

    Solution:
    1. I did open default programs and set Outlook as the default e-mail program.  I don't know who really helped.

    2. I found the icon/utility view 32-bit Control Panel items in Control Panel and then clicking on which revealed (and I say revealed!) the Mail icon.

    A few Notes:
    1. I could not open the mail utility using the control mlcfg32.cpl or control method of mlcfg64.cpl.  Or the box or the command window run.
    2. in the Panel of the menu display was never showing the "Veiw 32 Bit Control Panel Items", that it was just an icon buried in the list of control panel applets.
    3. this bit 32 items in Control Panel just seems to be a small bucket of 4 Advanced Control Panel applets, they made it difficult to discover.
    4. Outlook prefers that you perform Exchange from your default account.  It wasn't the case for me, but I can easily choose the account from which to send an email when I create a new e-mail message.  I tested which and it worked.

Everything is good the good ends, I guess, I'm running now.

  • Windows updates has shown installation but when checked 0kb installed and the icon was missing from the tray (Win XP sp3 IE6)

original title: another missing Windows updates missing yellow icon (Win XP sp3 IE6)

I'm having the same problem also.

Windows XP sp3 with IE6. All updates applied excluding this last batch with the numbers you mention, except for two of them.
I can tell you that, just as usual, the yellow icon was present when downloading these updates were. Then he disappeared after that that they have been fully downloaded.
Interestingly, I went to Microsoft Update to check to see the new updates and found downloaded after checked for updates, BUT when I dropped down the details for them they all showed 0 KB!
Here are the updates, that he sent to me (last

and the MSE customer update kb 2544035.
The only one who showed no 0Ko was a MS Security Essentials client update number kb2544035 with 7kb.
I tested two updates from win xp to see if they would be set up and they did, here are the numbers... .kb8900380 and kb2567680
kb8900380 is the edition of August 2011 of malware removal tool.
I tested and found that it was actually installed and worked.
Just one thing. I noticed on restart every time the yellow icon appears in the status bar but only flashes for a second or two, then
disappears once more. I tried to quickly click on it but it does not.
I then checked the taskbar customize notification and I found that it presents itself as an element of the past and said that it is associated with the download of updates.

    Syed N:

    Thanks for your suggestions.
I wanted to post back to update everyone on my current situation.
I was going to ask your manual correction of the WSUS... when I got home tonight. However, at the start of my PC tonight the Automatic Update icon (yellow) was actually download updates once more and things work like they are supposed to. After the download, the icon shows the balloon which informs you that you have updates available and when I clicked on the icon it was admissible and that it took me to the menu as usual at the.
Then, I tested several updates in the menu of the AU and downloaded. They were installed properly and allow them left unchecked the icon stay in the tray as usual.
I don't know what happened, but things are now correct.
You have an overview on why things "fixed", I would be interested to know the why of it. !!!!!!! It is interesting to me.
Maybe the MS is really followed this site and or you guys relay these flaws in MS for the correction.
Thanks for your suggestions, I've forgotten to be able to reset the update components!
    Finally, Syed:
If you can relay the suggestion to MS. I always liked Windows and like the superior ability I have to control aspects of it unlike OSX (Apple MAC) however the link low is a win (including 7) WIndows update mechanism. I was lucky for me and my family, I'm enough common sense to know how to apply updates to avoid the problems of the operating system, but not everyone has this education and too many times same own OS Win with very little in option programs/software and hardware drivers downloaded) have more up-to-date flaws then seems reasonable.
I would like to see MS improve WSUS and also more importantly still provide and ENCOURAGE users to take and the advantage of teaching material that MS can offer users to consumers.
    PA bear:
Also thank you for your suggestions. I didn't know that MSE is a culprit in this issue, but you never know.

I just got my new T510 with Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, and I tried to use Bitlocker to encrypt the hard drive. But Bitlocker is not found in the control panel.

Search used in the start menu and the only result is referring to manage file encryption certificates.

I can't believe that the new T510 missing functionality. Any help apreciated...

OK, BitLocker is in Win 7 Ultimate (and businesses).  You can use Windows Anytime Upgrade to upgrade your Pro to Ultimate--> hit-windows key + break to bring up the properties of the system, and there is a link at the bottom left of the window (I'll memory here) that allows you to perform upgrade anytime.  You do not have to reinstall your operating system or applications, or whatever it is, it happens on site once you have paid the tax.

  • My 'home' icon is missing from the toolbar. How can I get that back?

The little black House (the House icon) is missing from my toolbar. I always used to use to quickly go back
to start a new search. Why he disappeared, and how do I get it back? Thanks for your help.

You can open the Customize and set the toolbar to display items.

    • Firefox '3-bar' menu button > customize
    • If the missing elements are in the palette to customize then drag them back into the window to customize the toolbar
    • If you don't see an article on a toolbar and in the palette to customize, then click on the reset default button to restore the default toolbar configuration

If you right click on an item to toolbar in normal mode (non-personnaliser) mode, then you can remove this item from the toolbar.

    • "Remove from toolbar" will remove this element of the Navigation toolbar and moves it to the palette to customize (Firefox '3-bar' menu button > customize)
    • "Go to the Menu" will move this point '3' dropdown menu Firefox button bar
    • "Move to the toolbar" in the "3-bar" Firefox dropdown menu button will move that point to the toolbar

  • Lack of the "Change desktop icons" option in my control panel

Im trying to restore the icons of 'Trash' and 'My computer' original on my desk.

Ive played a lot with these before settings on other computers, all of which is running Windows XP or earlier. I can't find the appropriate options in the Control Panel on my vista computer. Many forums indicate the "Change desktop icons" option should be "Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization", but the link does not exist in my control panel.

Is there a way I can make this option appear?

    Hello

In the control/customization panel (or right-click on the desktop and choosing Properties), the ability to change the desktop icons under tasks in the left column, will not be like a link in the Center. You declare that this line does not exist? Good luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Crazy" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com Windows help - www.rickrogers.org
