"Don't forget to download history" setting is ignored

I don't know if it started the update of Firefox 8 immediately, but FF is currently saving downloads in the menu background despite the fact that I've got "Remember download history" checked.

I can't find anyone else with this problem and think that something in my profile directory is may be damaged. Can anyone suggest what file in there is likely to be the culprit? (so that I can remove it).

I see this in other versions of Firefox as 3.6.24 thus, this isn't a recent change.
