Don't WRT54G2 - a computer on network

Hello, I searched through several pages to try to find a solution to our problem, and although I found a few others like it, I still need help.  We had a Linksys Wireless-G router that has played both our DSL modem did.  We bought a WRT54G2 and was able to get my computer back online (mine is the internet gateway) and the laptop from my employer online using the Network Wizard.  However, we were unable to get computer my colleague to connect to the network and get online.  It is the same as mine, a desktop computer.  All are Windows XP.

I have tried everything I know to do including some tips here, but nothing worked.  I found that his didn't give any IP info when I do the search CMD IPCONFIG - say everything is disconnected.  He still has the antenna to the back of his computer accompanying the old router - I guess he still needs that?

After you run the Network Wizard on the computer, it shows the new network and trying to connect, but can't.  I tried to delete it and run the wizard again but still not good.

Any help is appreciated.

Lisa

Problem solved .  We ended up calling the technical support as the laptop lost connection to internet as well right after my last post.

We had to uninstall the adapter wireless on another desktop computer, download a driver updated via my computer and install it on his.  She also gave me a new password key for all 3 computers.

From now on, everything works fine.  We'll see what tomorrow holds!

Thanks, Brickmonkey, for trying to help me I really appreciate it!

original title: it is a boot sector virus

Please no one knows the answer?

I use MSE on XP. Have all implemented the automatic updates firewall that all fixed at a fairly high level of security, and to update and scan with MSE usually twice a day. When I'm not using the computer I disconnect the network and reconnect when then necessary safety precaution.

Sometimes, when I return to the computer is not found on the network, and the only way to restore the network connection is to re-boot. Then, I find it almost impossible to re-start as he died within 5 seconds after pressing the power button / stop. I tried holding the power button for a few seconds, but nothing helps I just keep on pushing sometimes for dozens of attempts and it stops automatically turn off the power. He intercepted not eventually if I keep on pressing him for dozens and dozens of attempts. It is?, is it a virus of a description, and if this is what and how is he riding in, on and why is MSE does not pick up.   I had similar situations where the IP address of my printer (Ricoh Aficio) has been changed, then turn off the printer and thrusting me on an audit of the laborious systems. ?.  Anyone has any ideas.

    Thank you very much

    Bob.

PS Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all.

Of course, it sounds as if you use the power button on the computer case.  Otherwise, good.

I guess that until you're away from the computer, disconnect from the network.  Even if you don't have the computer off, disconnect is still excessive.  However, if you do this, Windows should not bother you that you describe.

During your absence, the computer go to sleep or Hibernate mode (if so, which) or have you configured it stays on indefinitely until you deliberately shut down?  If the computer is set to go into sleep or Hibernate mode after a certain period, you have the same problem reconnecting to the network if you return before the computer is spent in sleep mode or Hibernate mode?

You have Service Pack 3 and the subsequent critical updates installed (for example, you use automatic updates)?

The next time the problem occurs, open the event viewer (start > run > eventvwr > OK) and look in the Application logs and system errors or warnings.  By default, when you open the log event viewer must be sorted with the most recent events at the top.  If not, click the title once (or twice) of the column to sort.  He can't go very far back to find questions.  If there is an error or a warning, double-click it to display the property page.  Then click on the copy icon (right underneath the up/down arrows).  Then paste in your response here.

You have your router configured to disable the SSID broadcast?  Even if it sometimes seems on Web sites for safety, it does not add to your safety really but creates network problems.  Do not disable the SSID broadcast, especially for Windows XP machines.  See http://blogs.technet.com/b/steriley/archive/2007/10/16/myth-vs-reality-wireless-ssids.aspx as this article points out, also not use MAC filtering in your router.

Another thing that might cause problems of reconnection (especially if you have your router's SSID broadcast disabled) is a connection to a nearby unsecured wireless network.  You should look through the list of preferred networks tab in wireless network your wireless adapter properties dialog box, and 'Delete' you don't want to connect to all networks.  To get here, open network connections (start > run > ncpa.cpl > OK), right click on the wireless adapter and choose Properties.  Then go to the wireless networks tab.

Even if you have properties of the adapter wireless open dialog box, select your network from the list of preferred networks and click Properties. Then click on the tab 'connection '.  What is the box checked for automatically "connect if this network is in range"?

Finally, in regards to your printer, it is a recommended practice to configure devices like printers have a static IP address instead of the obtain an IP address from the DHCP server on the router.  As you have observed, in some circumstances (the printer is off for awhile), the router can assign a different IP address for the router than he had when you first set up the things.  Some wireless printer drivers (HP, for example) are smart enough to deal with this, but most is not.

Read the manual of your Ricoh printer to determine how to assign a static IP address.  Pick one that is in the same subnet (i.e., the first 3 bytes of the IP address are the same as your other IP addresses), but out of the interval used by the DHCP server on your router.  You can find this information from the router configuration utility.

For example, the DHCP server on my Linksys router is configured to assign not more 10 starting at 192.168.1.100 IP addresses.  Which means that the first computer to connect will get 192.168.1.100, the second 192.168.1.101 and so on.  So I configured my wireless printers to have a static IP address that is lower than, for example 192.168.1.50.

After you set up the printer, click Start > printers and faxes.  Right-click on your printer, and then select Properties.  Click the Ports tab.  Already, the correct port must be selected.  Click on Configure Port.  OK your way out and enter IP address static, that you assigned to the printer.

The picture card reader is under g: removable disk, but when I insert the sd card is unrecognized.  No AutoPlay.  Under my computer, it shows a player when the card is inserted but is he named drive letter, just a question mark.    Error message appears and indicates that g: refers to a location that is unavailable.  He says it could be a drive on this computer or network.  This isn't networked.  Card is inserted correctly.  message indicates that it might have been moved to a different location.   How to get the drive recognized or knowledge if it was moved and twhere was - this moved?   Thank you James

    Hi James,

1 - is the device is not detected in Device Manager?

    Step 1:

You can try to change the drive letter and check if it helps.

Access the link below to learn more about changing the drive letter.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-GB/Windows-Vista/change-add-or-remove-a-drive-letter

    Step 2:

Also check if the device is detected in Device Manager. Follow the steps to go to the Device Manager.

    a. Click Start, type devmgmt.msc and press to enter.

    b. Locate the device name in the list of Bus USB controllers.

    c. If you see the item on to the SD card, right-click on it and click on uninstall.

    d. restart the computer and check if that helps.

    Hope this information is useful.

Can I put the network card wireless on my HP model of office p6610f on windows 7 64 bit to get the best wireless connection?

    VJP2002, welcome to the forum.

According to the Product Specifications for the computer, it came not with a wireless card installed.  However, you can add a.  Here is a card that should work for you.  It uses the technology of KT (Gigabit).  This means that your router must support AC.  However, it supports 802.11 a/b/g/n.  There are 3 PCI Express x 1 slots on the motherboard.

There are other options, for example, wireless USB adapters.  You don't have to open the case and install them.

  • Try a laptop through a desktop computer wireless network. Office uses a USB plug for internet access.

I would like to access wireless internet on a laptop (XP; Atheros 802. 11 b / g) with a desktop computer (Win64) that currently, I connect to the internet using a broadband USB connect the device (AT & T USB Mercury).  How can I build a local network of the desktop that I'll be able to connect in the House with the laptop?  Are there restrictions and limitations when using this type of internet connectivity vs a wired version?  (Because of where we live there is no availability ADSL or cable, just wireless).

    Hi Mseibolt,

Thanks for posting. From your post, it seems you are trying to send a signal from your desktop to your laptop using a wireless signal wireless. It is here that I don't see where you have any broadcasting wireless signal from your desktop. If this is the case, then the current senerio would not possible to establish ICS and have it function to your laptop.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • 1 computer think network doesn't have internet access when it does

I have a modem ActionTec with AT & T service and a LinkSys Router. My roommate's computer and my work computer can connect to it wirelessly and have internet, no problem. My computer connects to my network, but then said that my network has 'no Internet' which is obviously untrue as 2 other computers can use internet on this network. I have disconnected, turned off, turned on, you call it. I also know that my computer can still connect wirelessly because it works on a public wireless network. Possibly associated, turn on my computer, a RunDLL error message about how he doesn't get DisplayOnlineTray. Everything worked fine with these 3 devices (modem, router and my computer) to the AT & T had service problems last week. When the internet came back, my roommate's computer and my work computer were fine, but my computer can't see the connection to the Internet. Why my computer is blind in this regard and how can I fix this problem?

Please provide the following diagnostic information from your "personal computer":

What version of XP, including service pack (click right my computer and select Properties, if you do not know)?

    • Open a command prompt window (start > run > cmd > OK)
    • In the black command prompt window, type each of the following lines and press ENTER after each one

    ipconfig/all > "% userprofile%\Desktop\ipinfo.txt".
    ping 192.168.1.1 > '% userprofile%\Desktop\ipinfo.txt '.
    ping google.com > '% userprofile%\Desktop\ipinfo.txt '.
    Notepad '% userprofile%\Desktop\ipinfo.txt '.

Please note that there is a > in the first line and two > in the second and third lines

    • Copy and paste the contents of the Notepad window in your answer here
    • You can close the command prompt window and the window of Notepad and remove ipinfo.txt from your desktop.
  • On my old computer wireless network connection disappeared. When I try to update or roll back, nothing happens.

I just wrote all of the above details in the section title - I can connect to the internet with an ethernet cable, but not with my wireless connection (e.g. in McDonald's restaurants). I bought a new computer with Windows 7 and installed a dlink on this wireless router.  It is then the connection Wireless on my old laptop family disappeared.

It is not entirely because think that the hardware is failing.  ;-)

It seems as if you have uninstalled the Intel wireless controls in Add or remove programs and the wired connection disappeared, can you have uninstalled something else than just wireless stuff.

This laptop has the Wired Intel Pro/100 VE network adapter - easy enough to uninstall something inadvertently to another 'Intel '. ;-)  (The link for this driver is included here).
