Download Open Office - is not possible with Windows 8?

I tried to download free Open office, but the computer says no to this, it is not possible in Windows 8. Are there other free Word and Excel I can download? I Don t need all applications of MS Office, only Word and Excel.
Also - when I tried to open a .doc document saved in Wordpad, I didn t succeed. WordPad only showed a lot of strange signs and not the text. How can I open my word documents in Wordpad?

Please follow the steps below:
1. Uninstall CC program and features
2. run cleaning CC tool: use of the Adobe Creative Cloud cleaning tool to solve installation problems
3. install Creative Cloud again, download and install Adobe Creative Cloud applications
