  I see only one solution: you have to somehow use external DVD player and make it visible to your laptop. I try didn t, but I guess you need to start your laptop using WXP startdisc and load the MS-DOS driver for external device.
  If you will have success to access external hard drive I guess that you will be able to start the recovery procedure.

  Thank you for your message.  It could be that your player has gone wrong, you have another computer that you could test with?  Otherwise, you could check the Device Manager to see if it could be a driver problem (steps below).  Click HERE , and then run the FixIt!
  Click 'Start' > right click on 'My computer' > select 'manage '.
  Click on Device Manager.
  Do you see a yellow! next to your CD/DVD drive?  If so, you may need to go to your computer manufacturer's website and download the latest driver/firmware.  Is it permits?  If this is not the case, turn it on and test.

  Alright. That is the problem. I installed windows 7 on my laptop because a virus crashed my windows vista and the lost disk. After installing windows 7 my dvd player wouldn't even appear or open. As there is no power going to it. Before installing 7 worked well. I want to downgrade back to windows vista. I had an iso, mounted police and when installed would not let me because the car is not active or something. Went to disk management in the config of the admin and active player. That I reset.   Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

  Try a reboot.

  Make a backup using Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure that data files can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

  Try to set up another admin user account to see if the same problem persists. If back to my Mac is enabled in system preferences, the guest account will not work. The intention is to see if it is specific to an account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

If the system is operating normally, there may be 3rd party applications that pose a problem. Try to delete/disable the third-party applications after a reboot using the UN-Installer. For each disable/remove, you need to restart if you do them all at once.

  Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then make sure that the cables in both
  ends. Remove and replace, do not just tight. For laptops, you can often clean power and
  contacts data with a pencil eraser.

  Some DVD players do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the manufacturer of system and
  manufacturer of device to see if there is a firmware or drivers for your drive if necessary.
