DVD player will not play anything but is listed in the Device Manager

DVD problems

My DVD drive is listed in Device Manager but will not play anything and does not appear on my computer. I tried to install the driver, but an error message says the driver installation failed.  I use Windows 7.  Any ideas?

Tried this?

    Hi Paul

Your message is very short and you don t provide all the details, but I will try to provide the answer to a problem.
First of all, this looks like a hardware problem. I mean the lens of the drive cannot calibrate in the right position and would have problems.
In this case the player would not be able to manage different CDs or DVDs.

But first, you should try this
Access to the registry and try to remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters completely from the following registry key values:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

After this withdrawal, restart the computer.

I read that this accelerated procedure to solve the different CD/DVD drive problem.

But if you will not be successful then a hardware problem is possible and only a replacement of drives could help.

  • Windows Media Player will not play cd but show no errors

Windows 7 Windows Media Player 12 - previously would play music CD (purchased at retail, not burned) that I inserted in the CD/DVD/BD drive very well.  Now, whenever I put in a cd it seems to read the info of the cd (album, artist, title), but when I try to listen to a song, I see a red X.  If I hover over the red X is see "Windows Media Player has encountered an error.  Click the icon for more information. "When I click the icon I see simply a box that says"Error Details"and nothing more.  How to solve this error?

Thanks for the reply very detailed with several suggestions.

There are several known changes made to my computer since the last time I played a CD.  These include some Windows updates (which have been applied automatically during the stops), a Java Update, an update of Adobe Flash and possibly others that I don't know or don't remember.

I was a bit confused about whether it was a hardware problem or software, because Windows Media Player seems to read at least part of the ok CD to get the album and track information, but could not play all the tracks.  Just before I read your suggestions, I tried something to isolate if it was a problem with Windows Media Player or a CD drive problem.  I opened iTunes was already installed on my computer and previously used to play music stored on the hard drive (but has never been used to play music directly from CD).  I inserted a CD with Windows Media Player could not play and iTunes has played the CD fine.  I closed iTunes and then reopen Windows Media Player and now he can play any CD just fine in Windows Media Player.  I am happy to say that everything seems to work fine now, but I have no idea why the problem disappeared after using iTunes when I could re - create the problem at will before that try to play all the CD with Windows Media Player.

As a last test, I put a known "damaged" music CD.  It acts like the previous problem - i.e. can read/display the info of the album and the way tracks but cannot read any track, shows the red X next to each track he's trying to play, and by clicking on the red X opens a box that says "Error Details" and nothing more.  It would be nice if it gave an error code or a more descriptive message.

Thanks again for your response.  We can close this thread because my problem disappeared mysteriously.

  • Satellite M40-145: CD/DVD player will not play some DVD

    Hello!

I am the owner of a Satellite M40-145 bought a little over a year; DVD driver worked perfectly until three days ago, but today I discovered something... strange. Still, it reads the DVD business and burned the DVD + r, but apparently it does not read the DVD - r serious more. I tried with different DVD - Rs, I burned the same DVD player, without success; trying to access the DVD gives a message "insert the disk in drive D:".

In this case, I'm talking about movies on DVD. Please tell me there is a way to fix this without sending the computer to the customer service...
I wouldn't think he fell down a few days after the expiry date of the guarantee.

    Hello

Well, you can try to remove the Device Manager order form.
After restarting again the reader should be recognized again. Then, check if it is possible to read the DVD - R, CD.

But the question sounds like a lens calibration error. If you use different media, the lens must be calibrated again. But if this procedure fails, the drive is not able to read or write the DVD for example.
Unfortunately, in this case only the replacement of the drive will resolve this problem.

I found a thread in this forum that describes a similar theme:

Sometimes this error is displayed because the player does not support the environment.
Always it is every way is supported by readers and I think that in the user manual, you will find an index CDs or DVDs compatible

Maybe the drive is defective and can not calibrate lens in the right position.
But this laptop is not very old, and I can't imagine that the drive is defective
    However, nothing is impossible.

What you can do is to carefully clean the lens and see that it will help.

    Hello

If you use HP MediaSmart DVD to read Blu - ray disc, try the following.

HP now provides a version of PowerDVD 10 Cyberlinks which seems to be a better solution.  Download the latest installer for it on the link below and save it in your downloads folder.

    http://ftp.HP.com/pub/SoftPaq/sp56501-57000/sp56904.exe

Once the download is complete, open windows control panel, open programs and features, make a right click the entry for HP MediaSmart DVD and select uninstall - when this process is complete, restart the laptop.

When windows has reloaded, open your downloads folder and double-click Setup for PowerDVD 10 start the installation.  Once this done, see if your Blu - ray disc now plays OK.

  • My Media Player will not play anything. In addition, my Flashcards with images cannot be read from las night.

My media player played fine until about a month. No new program or anything has been added.

Last night my memory card with photos/videos on it that wouldn't pop up asking me on my memory card display.

    Hello

    1. could you give me the exact and complete error message?
    2. don't you make changes to the settings of Windows Media Player?

    Method 1.
You may need to rebuild the database from the Windows Media Player library.
    Here's how:
To resolve this problem, delete the Windows Media Player database. To do this, follow these steps:
    a. exit Windows Media Player.
    b. Click Start, run, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player and then click OK.
    c. Select all files in the folder and then click on Delete on the file menu.
Note: You don't have to remove the folders that are in this folder.
    d. restart Windows Media Player.

Note: Windows Media Player automatically rebuilds the database.

    Method 2.
Also, try the methods listed in the section below and check.
    Method 3.
To memory card problem, you need to change the AutoPlay settings and then you should get the pop up when you insert the memory card every time.
    I hope this helps.
