El Capitan on older iMac

I have an older iMac (mid-2009), who is currently running Yosemite and using Bootcamp to allow the operation of Windows 7.  Apparently, my iMac will not run Windows 8 or 10 under Bootcamp.  I want to upgrade my iMac to El Capitan, but I must also have Bootcamp.  I read somewhere that my iMac does not support this feature for me.  Anyone have experience or recommendations as to whether or not I should go to El Capitan?

Thanks in advance... Dick

I have an iMac 2009 end running El Cap very well. BUT I have 16 GB of ram, people of the greatest error, especially people with the old Mac, make tries to run a modern operating system without enough ram. To run smoothly, you need at least 8 GB of ram, but I think you should have this Yosemite running too. Regarding which version of windows is supported I don't know, I use Parallels and Win 7.

  • Problems with the compatibility of Lightroom 6CC and ElCapitan on older iMacs

When I upgraded to ElCapitan, Lightroom CC seems to continue to work without problem.  Then I did the first update and since then, I have not been able to use development module in the program.  I posted these problems on the Lightroom forums (see link below), but it is clearly an Apple problem, is not a problem of Lightroom. Lightroom people think it's the graphics processor in the older iMac which poses problem, but as I said above, it happened on the first update, not on the initial installation.  There is now another update on hold, and I fear that other programs will no longer work.  Apple made contact with Lightroom on those very real inconsistencies and what is their consensus?  This is a serious problem for a person using an older iMac and photo editing using Adoble products.  For a fuller discussion, please see the link below for the Lightroom Forum (information was also posted on the Forum from Adobe).

Should I worry about several incompatibilities with the new pending upgrade to El Capitan?

FWIW, iMac 24 "early 2009 may have at least 512 KB of VRAM (typical models

only had 256 K).  The specification of Lightroom CC, minimum is 1 GB of VRAM.

Operation on this machine was borderline at best and probably just lucky it worked at all.

In addition, a huge impact on the works of Lightroom is the amount of RAM installed.  With

El Capitan installed, try to run Lightroom CC with anything less than 8 GB will be

issue (despite what can say Adobe).

  • Optimization for older iMac tips

I have a 2007 24 "iMac running Panther, because I need to keep some operational software.

I am familiar with my system optimization to help it run more efficiently, but wonder if anyone has some advice that I may have missed.

    ~ Kort

Hi Kort, my i - Mac (mid-2010, 21.5 inch model) is the latest of a few years and is able to run the current OS X. I understand your problem, but who need access to the older software. About 6 months ago I added 8 GB of RAM on my i - Mac for about US $100 per OWC. The price on the same cylinder is now less than half that much. I think it was a good improvement and noticed the improved performance on repetitive operations. My machine has brandi well otherwise, but expect the upgrade to a new machine in the next two years, because it has the features that this material will support (like AirPlay), and I hope that this trend will continue. Finally, I expect to be locked in one operating system that I won't be able to upgrade.

  • Snow Leopard on external hard drive, but with the help of El Capitan on my iMac 5 K?

Is this possible to do? I have an old hard drive lying around, and I want to use older programs that are not supported by the newest OSX.

Can I simply install snow leopard on this external hard drive and just boot up to it through my new iMac end of 2015?

I know its possible with a virtual machine, but are there other ways to do it right?

    Thank you!!!

It is only possible when running Mac OS X Server 10.6 inside a virtual machine.

  • Get the circular skin trying to download El Capitan on old iMac 10.6.8.  Y at - it a disc?

I try to upgrade OS 10.6.8 to something higher and keep sent around in circles, literally.  I'd be happy with Yosemite, but App store says is no longer available.  I'd be happy with El Capitan, but can't seem to get there.  Is a disk available?

There is no available disk, it is ONLY available via download. Perhaps if you provided a fuller description of what happens when you try to download which could help. In addition, please be sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements required for El Capitan who are VERY VERY:

    General requirements

    • OS X 10.6.8 or later version
    • 4 GB memory
    • 8.8 GB of available storage
    • Some features require an Apple ID; conditions apply.
    • Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; charges may apply.

  • Need advice on running Windows 7 under the El Capitan on an iMac 27 ".

I was running Parallels on my MBP 15 ".  It worked but was a little slow to start and not completely satisfactory. They seem to have problems with each update of the OSX.  Now, they need a comprehensive upgrade to El Capitan.  Last year, I bought an iMac 27 "5K and want to run Windows on the iMac.

I have a program that I need to install that works under Windows (company TurboTax).  I'm about to use BootCamp and run Windows in its own partition.   I read the installation instructions and watched some YouTube tutorials on this topic.  Looks like it won't be too hard to install.  A person highly recommended having a good backup of the hard drive internal that some have found some files corrupted when you do this, requiring a full restore of OS X, applications, and files.  I wonder if a good backup Time Machine is sufficient, or do I have to do a new backup?

Also I have not found it yet in the documentation, but it's probably here.  I need to be able to access the same files in both Windows and OSX.  I guess this isn't a problem.  I need something special to make the files accessible to the two operating systems?  In my view, they are all accessible to any system of control.

Guess I'm looking to make sure that it is a good thing to do.  I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit DVD can I use for the installation.  I'm also going to use a USB key as suggested for the installation.  I was also informed that it is better to download the software to support first and put it on the USB key before starting the installation.

I've been advised to give 10 Windows a little more time before the upgrade to it.  Windows 7 is perfect for limited use, I Windows.Any comments on this?

    Thanks for the tips here.

Windows 7 is probably the most stable version of windows in the history of Windows, I would give him the props on 10.6.8 Yes, is very good, he's sucking fanboys.

Windows 10 is a monkey demon that came out of the bowels of * to disrupt his legacy.

that says that Windows 7 is no longer supported by MS is no longer under BootCamp (supported by 10.11) and you will need a previous instance of grandfathered in when OS X has allowed its installation or you will need to use something other than BootCamp to install Win 7
