I just bought an opportunity Elitebook 8540w with i7 quad core and four memory locations (I love it!).  It is running 64-bit Windows 7 Professional he came with a 4 GB memory module and I bought an additional module of 4 GB to 8 GB of total RAM.

I have the HP document that shows both modules of memory of 4 GB, it takes in the memory slot 1 and the other in the memory slot 3 for the proper functioning of the memory double channel.  All together right?

Not quite.  In the Elitebook 8540w, primary under the keyboard memory locations are clearly labelled '1' and '2' However, the locations of memory expansion on the underside of the chassis are also clearly labelled Opps '1' and '2 '!  There is no '3' and there is no '4' in which three vacant slots we installed the second module of 4 GB for the proper functioning of the dual memory channel?

All the facts on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hello:

Here is the link to the quickspecs for your laptop.

    http://h18000.www1.HP.com/products/QuickSpecs/13529_ca/13529_ca.PDF

See page 18 for the memory info.

The answer is no, you can't win advantage using memory PC3-14900, and it may not even work.

I recommend that stick you with memory PC3-1333 (10600). Do not get the PC3-10666 memory. I haven't read of anyone who gets this memory work in the HP PC.

    Hello

Unfortunately, business machines such as Probooks or EliteBook have more strict security consumption patterns - they do not produce "stop codes", the password cannot be derived from the serial number and the code is stored in a nonvolatile memory to remove the RTC cell does not reset the password in this case.

If you contact HP Business support, they may be able to file a custom SMC.bin that you can use to reset the password at startup.

  • Can I change the HARD drive in my Elitebook 8540w for one SSD?

    Hello

I have a HARD drive which started making funny noises and I expect to do fast enough. And while that is depressing in its own right, in my view, I better the situation and and put it in a fast SSD instead of the old thing. But before I go and buy the equipment I need to know that it can actually be done. I read another thread on this forum about to put an SSD in the expansion slot (CD/DVD), but I want to replace the main HARD drive. So my best guess is that it is possible, but if there are people here with experience, please guide me in how to proceed.

I made a backup of all my important files so really the only thing I want to do is remove my old HDD and put a new and then install Windows 7 from disks that followed with the computer.

I thank very you much for your time and your help.

    Hello

Nothing don't you to replace an old HDD with a fastest SSD 'modern '. In theory, you can use ANY SDS but on the safe side, please use SSD suppliers which guarantees its product will work as the following seller:

    http://www.crucial.com/EU/upgrade/HP+-+Compaq-memory/EliteBook/EliteBook+8540w+mobile+workstation+%28Quad+core+processors%29-upgrades.html

The process is very simple (I actually put a Crucial 960 GB to one of my machines today). My suggestion: prior to material things, backup all files/data and prepare a 'big bang' (in my case, I cloned my old HDD so very fast). Please read the following articles for more information:

Like that sounds sudden questions as a potential problem of h/w. is the system on battery or plugged when closing occurs?

In addition, before opening a case of pension (these systems come with a 3 year warranty), I encourage you to make the updates of drivers and bios

Better, however, is to use the Softpaq Download Manager (www.hp.com/go/sdm) to install all the updates available and required for your systems. Just a word of warning only select and update h/w driver and BIOS (must be made independently of the other updates) with SDM, a great tool that does not do the WRONG thing

  • EliteBook 8540w: battery - battery load, but not charging

    Hello

My HP elitebook 8540w works perfectly accept for one small thing, the battery. The laptop is bought in 2012.

When my battery is mounted and the AC is plugged in, it is said: connected Ac, battery charging. But in fact the battery in the logo remains static, and it does not charge. It's already a second new battery (first, I asked the supplier of spare batteries to send a new one, ordered through parts EET, accepted HP dealer for replacements).

When I run hp support assistant, he says: the battery is faulty, replace immediately.

Underneath, it gives the code: 9LN162-000000-XD7U3F-C0CU03

This was also the case with the previous "new battery." Same code.

I lost faith in the assistand of support from hp on this part, since it is already a second new battery...

I've tried all - remove driver for battery manager and holding down power button and other things.

Does not work. The fault could be in the laptop?

    Help, please?

    Niels

I contacted the service to call hp and they told me that the error code is not really explain anything about the specifics of the problem. It's probably the connection between the motherboard - battery and AC adapter plugin, because I tried different batteries, adapter, software reinstalls etc.

One thing however, HPA, he says that the status code is 0c. I have not encountered this code while browsing the web, you may know what it represents?

I will contact a repairman to do the hardware checks, since I am out of warranty.

    Thanks for your help!

  • HP Elitebook 8540w: RJ45 Ethernet connection view: HP Elitebook 8540w, win7 pro

    Hi people,

I just bought a HP Elitebook 8540w with i7 2.67 GHz Quad Core 8 GB of DDR3 memory and loaded with a drive Cruzer (r) 250 Go Solid-State load then Win 7 Pro.  Can't see a wireless device appears in the device Mgr.  but thought that I could get around this and hook up to our modem WIFI (Infinity Technicolor TC8305C) as he has had 3 RJ45 Sockets at the rear, but when I go to Device Mgr network cards, do not see anything on RJ45 and it does not show a connection in network and sharing Center and I let Win 7 troubleshoot and it says that I don't have drivers for Ethernet controller and network controller.  Y at - it somewhere that I can go to get a big fat files with ALL the drivers for networking in it?

Maybe this will fix the WIFI also?  But I don't think that there is a wireless network card physically in the unit and have one on the way.

    Thanks for any help,

    Jon

    Hi, Jon:

You just need to install the drivers of ethernet and controller of network devices.

These are the wired and wireless network cards.

    Here is one wired...

This package contains the driver for the Intel 82577LM and 82577LC Gigabit Ethernet Controller install package in support of the laptop models running a supported operating system.

    FTP://ftp.HP.com/pub/SoftPaq/sp53501-54000/sp53806.exe

Thank you for posting the material the network controller device ID, so I know what model wireless network adapter is installed in your laptop.

To find the hardware ID, click on the network controller, and then click the Details tab in the upper part of the window network controller.

Now you will see a drop-down list of property, and it will be set to the Description of the unit.

On this list and select the 2nd (Hardware ID).

After the first string of characters you see in the window.

  • HP Elitebook 8540w RAM Upgrade

    Hello

I am currently in the process of upgrading the RAM in my Elitebook 8540w. I have the i7 Intel M620 (dual-core) and bought the computer in August 2010. I also have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and 2x2gb (total 4 GB) of RAM.

I watched this document in order to see what the options were: http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04150938&ver=25

Now, I see 2 contradictory statements in this document. On page 7, it is said that 8 GB modules are only compatible with quad-core processors (represented by two asterisks) and that it would be possible to have 8 GB (2x4gb) total in my case. Then, on page 18, the table indicates that a configuration of 2x8GB (16GB total) would be possible since there are no asterisks in addition to this configuration.

So who is the maximum I can put in: 2x4gb or 2x8GB?

    Thank you!

    Hello

The document is for many products for the complete series. Looks like your machine is a machine double heart so it only it supports only 8 GB for 2 slots (the first * indicates 8Gb each slot, and a quad core, you can get up to 4 x 8 = 32 GB).

    Kind regards.

    Hello

I have a laptop Elitebook 8540w. I wanted to upgrade to 2 x 4 GB 2x2gb RAM memory. I did buy a kit of 2 x 4 GB I wanted, instead, I bought two chips of memory from 4 GB of HP.

  • Where the second RAM on the Elitebook 8540w location?

Hello, I have the Elitebook 8540w with processor i5 and windows 7 Pro. I bought two 8 GB cards to increase the ram, but can find accommodation with a stick of ram in it.

The manual says there are two slots for ram and it can be upgraded to 16 GB. But the video installation shows a slot under the keyboard. I thought he would have another slot somewhere once I opened and removed the keyboard. But there is no. Also, I opened the compartment in the bottom where other portable store their ram and it was not a slot.  My computer said it has 4 GB of ram installed on the computer. The stick I found was only 2 GB, which means that there are another 2 GB key somewhere. Anyone know where and how to get home? Thank you very much.

    You are the very welcome.

    This isn't the problem.

The problem is due to your mobile workstation with the i5 processor - it only supports 2 x 4 GB of memory.

You must have the quad core i7 for PC to support 2 x 8 GB of memory.

    Need help is no longer.

Find all the info, I needed to here which lead me to here and Yes, apparently it is possible.

    Citing the second link:

The EliteBook 2540p, 8440p/w, 8540p /w (with NVIDIA graphics card), 8740w (with NVIDIA graphics), 644Xb, 645Xb, 654Xb, 655Xb ProBook can produce up to a maximum of two screens in clone or extended mode via the integrated VGA and DisplayPort (DP) or via the VGA, DVI and DP on the docking station there. The laptop screen is counted as a poster so that if it is used, a single external display can be used. If the laptop screen is not used, two external displays can be used.

Finally no less I would like to mention that I was using "f.lux" lately, a great addition to the work in front of screens after sunset. Software removes the blue light of the screen after the sunset and this then simulates the light of the evening which, unlike the light of the Sun, does not your body and most of the brain all think it's day and so more alert.

This new way you can spread your screen after working more at night or after sunset and get to sleep more quickly since your brain is not listening to 'daylight' and therefore alert and awake but the faster ready evening light to himself to sleep. Sleep of the night people. Sleepling enough is just as important as good eating and exercise.

Took a little time to get used to but now I couldn't imagine a screen in the evening without it. Kevin edited my last answer where a direct link with this piece of genius was related, but if you're looking for f.lux online you will find as soon as POSSIBLE. I hope it's OK to mention this fact for other users working in front of the screens. Thank you Kevin for not taking this information a second time, is there no direct link this time.

If you want to learn more about the blue light and its effects and learn to see yourself check out this article on ScienceDaily, a revelation.

  • EliteBook 8540w: Elite book 8540w Windows 7 or Windows 10?

    Hi all

I have a HP elitebook 8540w laptop with Windows 7. It is advisable to upgrade to windows 10?

@Mrstenter, I don't think you understand the topic at hand.

HP Support Assistant won't see 10 Windows is a viable OS for this laptop, so, it will not find something for her.

While most of the components have in fact several updates, available from the OEM component, HP has been terrible to sustain this business 'quality' "Élite" mobile Workstation.

The Support Site for the 8540w was a mess, and terribly inconsistent, almost all the time it was available, it's a big reason that when it was time for an update of the platform, I went for a Dell M4800 instead of the EliteBook/ZenBook/s comparible.

Now, @Bredzy , insofar as Windows 10 is concerned; I leave the upgrade happens to mine:

I tried 8 and 8.1 on it and went back to 7 times.

10 has been good so far.

All the drivers I have in place before the upgrade were still in place after the upgrade, which was nice, and same OneDrive is synchronization, despite the fact that I am not connect with my hotmail account.

If you do not rely on the card mobile broadband, you'll be probably a bit stuck here.

I have not tried the once again fingerprint reader, again, because even in 7, the weird mix of validity and ProtectTools jived never really for me, besides, PT integrated only with IE, which I almost never use, so it was pretty useless once the laptop is unlocked at the start.

If you want to get most of your drivers updated before the upgrade, links here is what I use, from legitimate sources (Intel, AMD or Nvidia, HP)

  • HP Elitebook 8540W CPU Upgrade!

    Hello

I was just wondering if any1 can help me to make sure that if my HP Elitebook 8540W will support the processor bellow.

    http://Ark.Intel.com/products/50067/Intel-Core-I7-2720QM-processor-%286M-cache-2_20-GHz%29

    Thnx in advance!

    Hello:

The desired processor is not supported as shown in the above messages + there are different system advice even upgrade to a quad core processor, if you have a dual core processor.

BIOS update release notes indicate no added support for the processor you want to switch to another.

    http://h20000.www2.HP.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en & cc = us & prodTypeId = 321957 & prodSeriesId = 4096175 & swItem = ob-92682-1 & prodNameId = 4097219 & swEnvOID = 4059 & swLang = 13 & taskId = 135 & mode = 5

Here is the link to the Service Manual: Please refer to Chapter 3, page 26.

Look at the cards system.  As you can see, there is a map of system for dual-core processors: 520 M, 540 M, 620 M and a different motherboard for quad-core processors: 720QM, 820QM

    http://bizsupport1.Austin.HP.com/BC/docs/support/SupportManual/c02196457/c02196457.PDF

So, if you do not already have a 720QM in your laptop, you can only change your laptop with one of the processors dual-core.
