  The transport of pounding on the sides would indicate that the issue is not with transport being stuck, but rather a problem with the mechanism that tells the printer which transport is.  There is a thin strip of plastic called a bunch of coding that runs the width of the printer.  If this band is dislodged it could cause the symptoms you describe.
