  Thanks for the reply. I managed to solve the problem before you receive your advice to defragment my hard drive. I had the problem on / off power for about six months and defragmentation has not always been successful success so when it happens then I will go through the procedures that you have listed. I have installed and uninstalled various applications in the last six months and suspect that the register is not in optimum condition... I have a problem during a shutdown or reboot stop where I get an error of tfswctrl.exe I close and the system then hangs and requires a medical examination. Is there, by chance, a Microsoft utility that cleans up the registry for applications that have been uninstalled, but be persistent pieces that shouldn't be there?

  FOUND SOLUTION...  Although a SOFTWARE RESET did nothing, I did a HARD RESET (hold down the button ON / OFF everything by removing and battery reset).  Which 'cleaned' memory.  Once all the settings are reset (once again!), everything was "back to normal"!
