Hello dutchb,
The error, "another installation is in progress and must be completed first" can be attributed to the InProgress key found in the registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgressChange the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk.
I suggest that first make a backup of the registry or a system restore point. Then go to control panel, administrative tools, Services. Do scroll down and find the Windows Installer service, and set the start at the stop State. Delete the registry key to the location above.
Now, you shouldn't get the installation in the progress message when you try to uninstall programs.
I hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Marilyn

Some plug-ins must be updated. When I click on "update now" and download the update, I get a message "another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one. "I use Windows 8. There is NOTHING else being downloaded at the moment. I rebooted and it does not help this happened for several days.
Plug-ins that I try to put up-to-date are QuickTime and Google Earth. Also, I was unable to update my printer software.
I need simple instructions on how to correct her. I searched and see that this has been one problem for others but can't find a simple solution that is well beyond my knowledge base.
Found the solution on my own. If this happens to you, I open the troubleshooting Windows Update (Windows 8), and corrected the problem in order for me to update all plug-ins. Rebooted and everything was fine!

I am running windows Vista Home Basic; 32-bit. Norton 360 anti virus; ALSO I can not uninstall all ADOBE programs, error says cannot locate
%AppData%, critical then an error screen after another. I'm agree with getting rid of most of the old files and users to start all over again, windows was on the computer when I bought it. HelpI'm glad you're running properly again!
And have nothing to do with registry cleaners, you've discovered.
As you say, make regular data backups, and if something bad happens, you always have to fall back on recovery.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer and help others here.
See you soon.

Another installation is in progress.
whenever I try to install all the applications, im always invited that I need to complete a setup which is underway.
In the Registry Editor window, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress
If this key is there, then export it first, then delete this key. "A programmer is just a tool that converts the caffeine in code" Deputy CLIP - http://www.winvistaside.de/
