  The error, "another installation is in progress and must be completed first" can be attributed to the InProgress key found in the registry at:
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress

  Change the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk.

  I suggest that first make a backup of the registry or a system restore point. Then go to control panel, administrative tools, Services. Do scroll down and find the Windows Installer service, and set the start at the stop State. Delete the registry key to the location above.

  Now, you shouldn't get the installation in the progress message when you try to uninstall programs.

  My Dell Inspiron E1505, running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit has had problems lately with the download and installation of windows programs. I close, instead, it will give me msg, "do not turn off or unplug your machine... installation of updates x n updated but that light up as long I have either." He can even take days.
