This problem occurs if the Windows security .dll files are incorrectly registered.

To resolve this problem, use the following methods depending on the specific Windows operating system you are using.

Method for Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 to resolve this problem, save the Softpub.dll, Wintrust.dll, Initpki.dll and Mssip32.dll files. To save these files, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 Softpub.dll/s, and then press ENTER.
  3. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 Wintrust.dll/s, and then press ENTER.
  4. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 Initpki.dll/s, and then press ENTER.
  5. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 Mssip32.dll/s, and then press ENTER.

Method for Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 to resolve this issue, run the tool (Checksur.exe) system update. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Download and run the system update tool. This tool runs an ad hoc analysis of inconsistencies that might prevent future maintenance operations. For more information about how to download and run the Checksur.exe tool, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

947821 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821/) Description of the update readiness tool for Windows Vista system
  2. Try to install updates again.

Note After you run the tool, the Checksur.log file is located in the following location:

%SystemRoot%\Logs\CBS\

In a default installation of Windows Vista, this file is located in the following folder:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

  • Cannot install Update 938371 on Vista Home Premium because of the error 800b0100.

Using Windows Update and stand-alone update, I can't install the Update 938371 (which I believe is a sine qua non for SP1) on my Vista Home Premium laptop.

When I try to do, I get an error 800b0100. I tried the system preparation tool, I even tried the fix XP (for re-registration of dll), but doesn't seem to work.

My laptop is an Asus G2 with 3 GB of RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor (both at 2.5 GHz), if this can help.
