Error code: 2 (impossible to install a security update)

Original title: my computer will not install updates. Its a major update of security as well and I'm afraid something may happen to my laptop, if it is not updated. =(

Whenever I try to install the update, it breaks down and and error messages says that it is a code 2 with an unknown error... Please help

Hi alisaCree,

  • What security update that you are trying to install?
  • You are able to correctly install the other updates?
  • What operating system is installed on your machine?

You can perform the clean boot and then download and install the update manually from the Microsoft Download Center.

Boot start Windows7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs and helps eliminate software conflicts.

The following link has steps showing how to perform the clean boot: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Please make sure that the computer is configured to start as usual according to step 7 of the article: how to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Hope the helps of information. Please post back and we do know.

HOW to do a clean install of Vista: see the "to install Windows by performing a clean install" (or "reinstall Windows Vista") http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-Vista article

NOTE: because you upgraded to Win7 Vista, you will need to do a clean install of Vista. Once you get Vista fully patched & SP1 is installed, you will be able to switch to Win7 again.

NOTE: If your computer came with a set of disks, there is a hidden partition restore (not to be confused with the restoration of the system) you would use to do the clean install (AKA a "destructive recovery")... unless you wiped out the hidden partition when you upgraded to Win7.

After the new installation, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of EVERYTHING on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or one local network (i.e. other computers) AND BEFORE to plug in a flash, SD card, or any other external drive to the computer otherwise:

Tip: After completing the computer fully patched, download/install KB971029 manually before connecting any player external to the computer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971029

VERY IMPORTANT! -Online free trial Norton will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the trial for free AND download/run the Norton Removal Tool before installing updates, Windows Service Packs or IE upgrades AND BEFORE installing your new antivirus application (for example,Microsoft Security Essentials -free).

  • Vista - Error Code: 9370001 (impossible to install KB947821)

When you install this update, insttallation fails and I get this error. System tries to install the update whenever I close the PC, and I had several recent cases of blue screen.

Try to download and install it manually by downloading on your desktop and install it. Insert the number to get the good update and choose the one corresponding to your version of Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.

If this does not work, try a boot minimum http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135.  Disable your security software.  Then try the update again. Once this is done (if it worked) don't forget to put Vista in normal status, as described in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal and reboot - this solution will not work.

If this does not help, please transfer your question in Forum Windows Update:http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/threads where updates experts will be happy to help you.  Please post with the information requested here:what to post in the Windows Update forum

  • Error code 8E5E0147 for installation of windows security updates

Hello. I noticed that no new updates have been installed on my computer (with the exception of all updates for Windows Defender but also the recent Microsoft .NET Framework Service Pack 1 and the .NET Framework family updates). Everything else, like security updates, have failed since January 13, 2009. I saw someone else who has had this problem for 9 months. The error code is 8E5E0147. Wndows update download and try to install the updates. However, once completed, it says "failed". I worry because my computer is not updated for April fool virus. Can I get any help here? I heard people say that maybe I need to ask a Windows installation CD.

Thank you, Martin. The thing is that my .NET and service packs would have to install. Don't forget that my problem was not downloaded from the update, but the installation. I think I found the answer. My Norton Internet security and Antivirus had expired. When I got Windows security updates, I had no program to receive these updates. I renewed my subscription, and everything worked. It has not been easy. However. I had to keep doing updates on Norton security until I received the message "no new updates were found" after that, I got all the new definitions and update of WIndows was allowed to install thanks to the new KB for your help.

If you're used to other partitioner, as me, I used linux to get rid of this windows 100MByte partition and installed linux then on another HARD drive, I needed to pull the linux HARD drive cables, then using only the HDD Win7 I can install Win7 SP1. I hope that this is a solution to your problem.

If you still cannot install it or the linux is on the same drive, I think that there is no solution. Only to repartition the whole HARD drive and use the partitioner to Win7.
