  I have Microsoft Office 2007, and for weeks now Windows Update is not able to update the necessary updates. Error code 646 appears after updates fail, but all of the other Windows updates work very well but these Microsoft Office simply don't work and it happened for weeks.   Have accumulated 5 updates which will not be installed.  Getting an error code 646 when I try.  The updates are:

  KB978382

  KB976321

  KB978380

  KB980729

  KB981715

  All are updated Office.  OS (Windows 7) updates install correctly.  Spin a legitimate licensed for home/student copy purchased 2007 online.

  Driver/Accessories component updates also will work perfectly.  Any ideas?

  This problem occurs when the agent Windows Update Wups2.dll file is incorrectly registered in the registry. Because registry files that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing, update facilities have failed. There are two methods to resolve this issue, use method 1 first, and if it did not resolve your issue, go to method 2

  Method 1: Save the Windows Update files

  1. click Start and type notepad in the box start the search .

  2. click on Notepad in the programs list.

  3. copy the following commands, and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:

  I tried to install KB967044 for Microsoft Works 9. Like others, I get the error code 646 for the automatic update. I tried to manually install, but installation requires the CD of Microsoft Works. Now, Works has been installed at the factory, and I do not think that the CD that came with the computer. In any case, I was unable to find such a CD. Disable my firewall has not changed the problem.   OK... I had the same problem with the download of the 2007 Microsoft security updates. When I tried to install updates, I receive error 646. I finally solved my problem by going to the Download Center on Microsoft and I install manually.

  Here are the steps that I took... which I think should work:

  (1) go to the Microsoft Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx
  (2) look for each update code that begins with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e. KB974234)
  3) click on the link for the download and then click on download and run. I think you have to accept an agreement, then click on continue or OK
  4) repeat for all downloads that you can not install
  (5) run Microsoft Update new and click search the updates and if updates have been installed successfully, they should no longer appear in the updates that must be installed.

  I don't know if it is not relevant or if it helped me succeed to install updates manually, but before I manually installed my updates I followed the instructions David_O posted here http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/f3390e74-9961-4aae-8a05-554c1a9cf1a2 . I suggest that first of all try to download manually by following my directions. If it does not, then it's a possibility instructions of David resolved an issue that allowed me to download them manually disable Microsoft downloads site.

  I can't believe all the research and the suggestions of the technicians did not work... sometimes your own research is the best!
