  • XP - error Code: 80040154 (cannot install updates)

All started with Windows Update. It has not been updated. Not automatically, or manually. He repeated:

The files required to use Microsoft Update are longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now(recommended)
Let me read it on other measures that may be required to solve the problem

I chose the recommended option, it showed, it has been downloaded files, then save, then he returned to the foregoing. I left alone.

Next Windows Defender would not be updated and gave me the error code 80040154, I uninstalled it. Tried to scan the laptop using Windows Live One Care Web Site. From the beginning of the download, it stopped and gave error code 80040154, I installed Windows Security Essentials, when it finished installing he tried to update and gave error Code 80040154. Finally, I timed it trying to update Windows from the update site, check the update log and you guessed it. IT FAILED DUE TO THE ERROR 80040154.

Recently, I tried to reinstall Windows Live Messenger and I can't connect because of why? WHY? 80040154 ERROR CODE!

WHAT IS THIS ERROR? HOW CAN I SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?

Help, please. I need to update windows so I can update my google video chat, can't use it cause it is says I have to update windows. WHAT IS THIS ERROR?

80040153 translates into "class not registered".

I recommend trying to re-register the DLL from Windows Update files by using method 4 in the article below:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/822798

You can also try other methods as well, as they won't hurt but the method that I think will help #4.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Don,

Yes, follow the steps in the article and try to install the available windows updates.

Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. • Error code 80040154, Please HELP!

Hi, guys. I just joined because I can't seem to find a solution for the problem that seemed to just start today... and I don't know much about computers except how to cause problems!

I currently have a laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 and running a 32-bit operating system.

I just installed Norton 360 Version 4 on the computer yesterday, and that's when my problems began. I don't know if I'm having a conflict with the anti-virus program and windows, so Windows is having the problem.

The thing is, Windows Defender will not download updates, and does not update Windows. It was working fine before, but now it seems that it is having serious problems.

When I try with Windows Update, I get this: "code 80040154."

When I try it with Windows Defender, which tells me that in the Security Center, is obsolete and should be checked for updates, I get this: "error found: code 0 x 80040154."

Does anyone have this problem? If so, how it was fixed? And please, try to explain as clearly as possible, because I think I could have found the answer somewhere else here, but I did not understand what the devil posters spoke.

    Thank you!

Webroot recently expired, so I downloaded Avast! In my case, Windows Update has not worked for at least 6 months...

Should have replaced free NAV before your subscription or trial period expires (and you must have run the Norton Removal Tool before installing a replacement AV app, too). Then you would have replaced the Webroot request before that your subscription has expired or the free trial period.

    Hi Rogerthuso,

Thanks for posting your question on the forum of community of answers.microsoft.com.

Initially, we must ensure that nothing is running in the background that is to stop the process.  A number of questions had to be a response to processes that could be loaded, but this step will help eliminate questions and help us to check more in what layer level, the problem occurs.

Let's start with a clean boot process, it is sometimes used in a number of troubleshooting steps, but it helps particularly when used in a framework of community forum with the wide spread of programs and services that may be in conflict.

Here are the steps for cleanboot:

The steps for the clean boot is from the following article.   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135.  You can refer to it for the complete overview of how this process works.  Don't forget to put your system back into a normal state after troubleshooting is completed.  Also, keep in mind, after performing the steps below, please indicate any error you receive or information you get when you try to access Outlook.

Step 1: Perform a clean boot Note if the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We recommend strongly that you do not use System Configuration utility to change startup options on the computer, unless a support engineer Microsoft directs you to do so. This can make the computer unusable.

    1. Log the computer by using an account with administrator rights.
    2. Click Start

type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue.

    3. On the general tab, click Selective startup, and then clear the check box load startup items. (The check box use the file Boot is not available.)
    4. Under the Services tab, click to select the skin all the Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

Note following this step lets Microsoft services continue to operate. These services include networking, Plug-and-Play, record of events, error reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you can permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use to restore the system with the existing restore points.

    5. Click OK and then click on restart.

      Please keep us informed.

      Kind regards
