ESX 3.5 u4 RAID 1 on PowerEdge 850

Hi all

I have a small question, I used to have an ESX Server 3.5 to u4 mode RAID 0 on a Dell PowerEdge 850. Finally, the system crashed, the RAID array will be more found.

I decided to re - install ESX 3.5 u4 but with RAID 1 instead. During the installation process and after the installation are finished, I heard a plaintive high-pitch noise when the array is initialize, now it does not when I put the RAID 0 configuration and install ESX. I also tried with ESXi 3.5 u4 but get the same results with RAID 1.

I checked on the VMWare Web site, with the compatibility tool and the PowerEdge 850 is not listed in the compatible Dell servers to ESX 3.5 u4, but as I have explained before use to run ESX on this same PowerEdge without problems.

I am trying to pin-point the source of the problem and I would like to know if any of you correctly installed ESXi or ESX on a PowerEdge 850 with RAID 1?

BTW, I ran tons of diagnosis on the system, and the HARD drive and all the components are healthy. That's why I wonder if the problem is not with the software and hardware.

Thanks to you all!

Any input is appreciated

Hello

I also had these problems with ESXi 3.5 u4 - but only if I installed immediately after creating the RAID1 array. The high pitched noise is the "RAID degraded" alarm on the CERC SATA 1.5/6 controller that comes with this system. My solution was to allow the RAID to build entirely during the night before installing u4, which allowed me to install, and I've been running for a month now without any problems. From one day to the next, I say only because they were 500 GB disks and took some time to build completely.

Furthermore, I have now decided to return to u3 u4 disables many management utilities I was going to use (using the "unsupported" and RCLI). After the RAID reset, I tried to install u3 immediately (during the process of RECONSTRUCTION/VERIFY) and managed without a building during the night.

A warning on the u4: even if he can be downloaded version of Dell (with the CIMs Dell preinstalled for use with OpenManage), the CIMs are missing the most critical readings on the State of the RAID. The other hardware monitoring is pretty irrelevant compared to know when your RAID array is degraded and must be repaired.

If anyone has solutions to get the controller CERC report thorugh either OpenMaanage or SNMP so please point me in the right direction.

Good luck.

  • Cannot install esx 4.1 under raid 5 with 2.7 TB hard drive

    Hello

I've been tring install esx 4.1 to IBM 3650 server with Raid-MR10i server with raid 5. 6 x 600 GB hard drive

When it come to selec-hdd it shows the hard drive, but cannot select them.

but this does not happen with esxi 4.1 for esxi 5.0. and also if I tried with 4x600GB hard disk drive is active and I can install esx 4.1

any ideas. IWAS tring to understand her for the last two days

    Thanks in advance

    My thoughts

The maximum supported size of the LUN in vSphere 4.x is 2 TB

It is why ESX 4.1 can't install TB LUN 2.7, but can be downloaded on the 1.8 to

ESXi installation is different because it uses only a small partition of the large LUN and do not create a data store

You will see after installation you probably woun't be able to create a VMFS data with the remaining space store, because it is longer than 2 TB on ESXi4

  • Degraded RAID 1 array: PowerEdge 2800

Hello to everyone. I hope someone can shed some light on this unusual situation.

I have a PowerEdge 2800, which must be replaced before May this year, this is a great server and done an excellent job over the past 7 years.

OK for the problem; The server administrator has been a failure on 0:0

    In the server, we have:

    0: Maxtor 36 GB 15 k 0 0:1 Fujitsu 73 GB 15 k something 1:2... 1:3 something...

So, I jumped 0:0 and the server worked great with a range of gradations, and 15 seconds I inserted back to the PE2800. After about 45 minutes the RAID 1 array has been rebuilt, but it still says expected failure. So I thought that better order some new readers - I received today; 2 x 146 GB 15 k Seagate Cheetah.

OK, so I jumped 0:0 drive and inserted one of the 146 GB Cheetah and the server crashed - wouldn't boot at all and gave me an error stating that the logical drive failed.

Thus, in the PERC4i BIOS, I forced drive 0:1 online and the server is now back operational but with a range of gradations.

So that's where I am, what choice do I have?

Insert the old disk with a predicted failure, leave it alone or try the 146 GB Cheetah. I don't really want to do an any of them, but I will order another 73 GB Fujitsu in the meantime.

I want to know is why the server crash after having inserted the cheetah disc? I traded to many-a-time pluggable hard drives in the past in several dell breaks and never experienced anything like this.

Degraded running, any response would be massively appreciated.

    Thank you very much.

"So, I'm now to square, where I have a RAID1 system with a disk failure planned. What would you do from here on? »

Another thing that many people do not know is with a disk of pf, should it be forced offline before replacing, if not the FP flag can be assigned to the new drive (until a real "rescan" is performed) and can result in strange behavior (the controller is more sensitive to potential readers of pf failure).

    "Common sense says I can't mix-match 10 k / 15 k TPM!

You CAN / layout speeds and/or sizes (there's nothing wrong with him "technically"), but in real-world scenarios, you would ever want to mix speeds (depending on the configuration, it degrade the speed of the whole picture). One thing you can't do is mix U320 SCSI U160 readers on a bottom of basket/controller.

"What would you do from here on?

I guess from here depends on what you feel more comfortable making. There is a chance that the pf reader works fine until you are finished with the server (or until you can get another replacement - if you feel another replacement would be better than those you currently have), even if it might cause additional problems if his condition deteriorates. There is a chance it could happen again if you try to replace it, but I think it's unlikely to happen. If it was me (and it is important to remember that this isn't :)), I force disk 0 offline and replace "hot" by the other 146 GB drive. Another thing you could do, who feel probably less risky, is simply to insert the disc of 146 GB in an open slot, assign as a relief, then force offline disk 0, which results in a regeneration start automatically with disk 0.

  • esx host does support RAID ATA?

hardware requirements host ESX said, "RAID adapters supported are HP Smart Array, Dell's Perc and IBM ServeRAID controllers"

Does include ATA RAID? If it supports RAID ATA, I use 2 disks or more to in my local machine to an ATA RAID supported by esx host storage. It work?

    Thank you.

It does not support ATA controllers I know.

  • Replace disk in RAID-1 of PowerEdge 2970

I managed a PowerEdge 2970 server with a RAID-1 in place. Recently, one of the drives has failed and we bought two replacement disks. When I loaded one of burners in the Bay for the drive replacement fails, the PERC utility detected a foreign start-up car and I was able to import the foreign configuration, and the drive has been rebuilt automatically. I gave the car at night to rebuild and the perfect morning it had worked. So far so good.

I wanted to replace the other drive in the system as well. When I took out the disc and put the second replacement, I had again a foreign configuration detected but by selecting the foreign configuration to import on startup option seemed to have no effect. I searched the PERC utility to try to find something to make the drive added to the existing virtual disk, but no dice. Finally I ended up putting the original screw back and managed to do the rebuild.

I tried to install the software OpenManage on OS (Red Hat) to see if I had a little better luck. Currently, I have the original and replacement #1 player in the machine, configured as a virtual drive. I also put the second replacement in another Bay and he appears as a foreign disk.

I tried to use the option "replace Member disk" in OpenManage but no records have been listed as possible replacements and I received the following message:

Storage Management displays only records that can be used as a member to replace. There are at present no discs that are available, large enough, or the correct type to use as a member to replace for this virtual disk.

Of the original disks are Dell 73 GB SAS model #MBD2174RC. The replacement disks are Dell 300 GB SAS model #VJR75.

    Any help would be appreciated.

IMPORT - used ONLY when a table is offline and is not accessible (several readers showing foreigners, etc.) or when moving disks to a new controller.

CLEAR - used when a table is online and functional and a new disc is introduced or an old drive fails and is marked as foreign.

Selection of evil is a very simple way of corrupting your data. According to your description, you're lucky, you don't destroy your data, and I guess that there is more to the story that is written (or its configuration was a relief or empty, which is unusual).

NEVER supply down to replace a hot-swap drive.

At this stage, to replace the original with a new disk, you must DELETE the foreign configuration: OMSA, storage, PERC, information/Configuration (link at the top of the page), Clear foreign business in drop-down list of tasks available for the controller. You can do ANYTHING with a foreign disk until you have solved the foreign configuration (compensation or import). After erasing the configuration foreign, the disc should show Ready... you will be assigned as a hot spare to start reconstruction.

After you rebuild your array will be always 68 (73 GB) in size. If you are interested in the use of the newly available space and assuming you have a PERC 5/6 controller, the only thing you can do with the extra space is to create a second RAID array on the disks, which will appear as a separate 'disc' for the operating system.

  • The RAID on the PowerEdge T610 controller upgrade

This system came with a SAS6/iR controller and after the installation of Server R2 2012 and with 32 GB of RAM it's on all fours, probably because we use software RAID 5. I want to upgrade RAID controller so that I can use hardware RAID 5. What controllers are compatible with the T610? I know that the H710 is eligible, but what about the H710P and the H810? We have a bottom of basket that holds 8 discs. Do we need anything else? I see that some people needed cables as well.

PERC 6 / i and the H700 are validated for the T610. The Hx10 are 12 generation servers (like T620, T610 is 11G). H8x0 controllers are for external storage.

Main differences between H700 or PERC 6:

PERC 6 is 3Gbps, max disk 2 TB, 256 MB cache
    PERC H700 is cache cache/memory NVRAM 6Gpbs, TB + 2 disks, 512 MB or 1 GB

  • RAID and Dell PowerEdge T110 ESXi 5.0 configuration

I just do a fresh install of ESXi 5.0 on a Dell server, which has 2 x 250 GB HDDs in RAID 1 configuration. However, in the management of ESXi I am presented with 2 drive 250 GB each, which should be visible as a single drive. This is something that Windows 2008, on bare metal, took care, and what should I do with ESXi to fix this? I just need to reboot the server and enter the RAID configuration? I need to be careful because I don't want to lose any existing data. Thank you.

    Welcome to the community,

ESXi supports only RAID controllers that are transparently logical drives to the operating system. In your case, it seems that you are using a RAID controller for software that requires additional drivers for the RAID of the operating system, which are not available for ESXi.

  • ESX will not recognize Raid storage

    Hello

I just bought a HP DL 360 G5 server and have tried to install esx 4.0, but when it comes to the screen on the choice of storage LUNS it remains empty.

The latest version of the bios on the server is may 2009. Is there a limit on the size of the disk, or someone give tips on what to check.

The server was listed as compatible, so I'm not sure why it didn't get picked up first time.

  • How to break mirror RAID 1 on Poweredge 2600

The user has a PE2600 with 2 drives RAID 1 2 stripes. I was called because the server does not start. Both drives are offline. I forced the 1 disc to go online and he began starting in Windows 2000 server, but goes to a blue screen with a message that if it happens again try to run chkdsk /F.

User can not find their windows CD isn't an option. I forced the car 1 offline and disk 0 online and it starts very well and I can connect. Problem is the event dates logs before I started as being for more than a year. I'm guessing that disk 0 went year last offline and they ran right next to disk 1.

So I think if I break the mirror and Drive 0 boot so I can watch the disc 1 as a second drive and withdraw their data. Does this sound right?

    N °

    (1) there is no way to 'break' a mirror around PERC. Do not take in charge no RAID and could not convert in a smaller (2-drive RAID 1-> 1 disk RAID 0) RAID level.

    (2) requiring the second disk online so that the controller can use the configuration and data access does not work like that. It will require to return with the data already online with disk 0, probably destroy data on two drives.

You can force drive 1 online and try to access its data via a live any OS - or a completely separate table - but not from the companion disc.

  • The RAID 1 in PowerEdge T320

    Hi all

I want to install Raid 1 on server T320, but I do not know how?

I try a few steps before by ctrl + R and make VD, then add two (1 Tera each) HARD disks to the VD.

After I install windows server 2012 and I see that one is difficult with a single disc (1 tera).

How do I know that raid 1 is installed and working properly?

If you can help with the steps to install and screen shots if available will be nice.

    Thanks to you all.

"I see only a tough guy with a single disc (1 tera). How do I know that raid 1 is installed and working properly? »

Looks like it works very well. With hardware RAID, the controller includes the physical drives in an array and creates a disk of 'logic' or 'virtual '. It is ONLY this virtual disk that the operating system sees, NOT the individual physical disks. You can install OMSA (OpenManage Server Administrator) to monitor and manage the RAID, including the different physical disks, but if otherwise, if you want to test the RAID, pull a drive while the OS is running. If the OS crashes, it does not. If it stays on, then it works fine. I would recommend the OMSA road.

  • Dell Poweredge 850

Good so I had to deal with a perc 4/SC for a day or two to find that it is not compatible with 2008 r2.

I need to upgrade 4e/DC I think. Is their any conflict of hardware I need to know?

Is their a process for the replacement of a raid controller I need to know? Where is the best place to buy a 4th/DC?

so I understand this system is old and replace the system would be easier but I was handed the project to get this upgrade and I do not disaapoint.

any information that you consider, I got useful would be appreciated.

No, the two controllers are fully supported in the 850. I updated the firmware of the system before installation if (BIOS and ESM first, then another firmware or system).

  • Problem of PowerEdge 850-> 6 GB 2 GB memory upgrade

    Hello

I am sorry to post a topic here, but I'm a little frustrated with my inability to upgrade my memory in my server PowerEdge. The server has been sitting in its box for a while and now that I need to use it, things go wrong!

Initially, I bought the server with two 1 Gb simms installed. Look at my page in support of the bus of these speed is 533 MHz. Today, I decided I need of a few more memory than it and bought two new 2 Gb simms (Kingston KVR800D2N6 / 2G). These news have a speed of 800 MHz. I understand that the memory should slow down to the lowest common speed, i.e. the 533 MHz of the original simms.

Read this link it explains how the memory must be inserted into the server:

    http://physics.uku.fi/tietotekniikka/laitteet/Dell/PE850/it/t8652c50.htm#wp1196338

And this link defines the designation of memory media:

    http://physics.uku.fi/tietotekniikka/laitteet/Dell/PE850/it/t8652aa0.htm#wp1059656

The two 1 Gb simms were taken 1 a and 1 b as described here.

So I moved the two 1 Gb simms faced 2A and 2B, the new 2 GB simms inserting Sockets 1A and 1B.

When I started the server, I was greeted with the dreaded beeps! Lights A and C are green while B and D are orange, as described here:

    http://physics.uku.fi/tietotekniikka/laitteet/Dell/PE850/it/t8652c20.htm#wp1056898

I tried to go back to my original memory and the computer started with 2 GB or RAM. I put just the new memory and it started again without problems and 4 GB or RAM. So it seems I have a problem with the two different sets of simms.

The combination of size should be acceptable according to the first link I included.

All the memory simms work on their own as I saw by starting it with combinations of 2 GB and 4 GB.

Is there a problem with the mixture of speeds he of memory?

Any help to get all of this joint work would be most appreciated.

Hello.. I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with a Perc6 / i. I am currently under VMWare ESX 3.5i using RAID 5. I added another drive and try to add that, for VMWare. Looking at the sensors, the UNCONFIGURED GOOD watch drive. When I try to add through VIC using storage - & gt; Add storage, the disk is not there. I looked everywhere to try to add this drive but its got the best of me. What I am doing wrong?
