ESX 4.1.0 USB troubles

Hey all, I'm trying to connect a USB to an ESX 4.1.0 server to copy some files on it but I have a few questions.  It seems to be detected (present in dmesg and lsusb), but he does not appear in fdisk-l and I can't ride.

of dmesg:

If I do a 'method' in / dev, no / dev/sda * nodes are present.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello

You can't see your USB drive becaused it is transmitted to be mounted on the virtual machines, not the host. Mount it on the host, you must stop the service "usbarbitrator" before plugging the USB:

1. ssh into your ESX

2 /etc/init.d/usbarbitrator stop

3. connect the USB drive

4. support USB key

5 do stuff you want to do

6. umount USB

7 /etc/init.d/usbarbitrator start

  • Installing ESX 3.5 on USB Flash?

    Hi all!

I faced an interesting question for me: we bought IBM BladeCenter with HS servers 21 XM without flash disk USB (4 GB) with ESXi 3.5 hypervisor in this regard, in addition, we purchased the license on ESX 3.5 Standard sort... I have tried to install ESX on usb flash and had some trouble, I can't used the automatic partitioning of usb flash and he did it in itself:

    102 mb for/Boot

    1200 MB swap

    Vmkcore 102 mb

    542 MB/var/log

    2000 mb /.

for vmfs3 I used external FC LUN, then I got the success on my installation, but during the initialization of my server (exactly on the VMWARE ESX Server is started) I had the breakdown. I got the console access to the server and when I look for FS on usb flash I see all the files but no fstab! Is it possible to install ESX server or not.

  • Installing esx 4.0 on USB - someone at - he had problems?

    Hello

I'm planning an installation on a blade and was hoping that rather than installing esx 4 on hard to install on an internal USB drives. This means that I can use the space in the blade for extra memory. I know that it will work with ESXi, but I'd really rather full use blown esx 4 because I am more used to the way it works.

Somebody has experiences / questions / comments / limitations with this?

    Thanks in advance,

The reason why ESXi works, is that it is designed to make minimal wrote on the USB drive. ESX is not and will do a lot of paperwork. You can have success, but I wouldn't count not that it is safe for a long time. ESXi can install on a 1 GB USB key. You probably need at least 10 GB for ESX. A small SSD? HP Blades begin to come with them. Not hot swap is interesting.

  • How can check on new USB attached in ESX 3.5

I have host ESX 3.5. I have attached the USB stick with it but when I check with the command fdisk-l so only readers of sda are shown but another drive are not listed. I think that the USB is not detected but I am confused because I hurt.

    You can help...

Yes, you will need ESX 4.1 for usb passthru to VM to work...

  • Does anyone has installed ESX 3.5 on a USB Flash drive?

    Hello

I read some comments on how to get ESXi on a USB Flash drive, but I wonder if the same thing is possible with ESX 3.5?  The reason why I ask is that many of our ESX servers are wired directly into our DS/4700 IBM SAN for their data warehouses and we currently have local disks for the operating system itself.  Cost-mindedly, it would be wonderful if we can just install ESX operating system on a flash drive $15 (which would never be deleted you mind) as opposed to hard drives IBM overpriced or the boot-from-SAN.  The thought of having an identical set also to go with our identical to our disaster recovery site hardware is also very attractive. If someone could provide an answer on this, I would be very grateful.  Thank you!

    -John

If you ask if it is possible, yes it's possible.  Incorporated just means it is preinstalled on removable media (usually a flash drive, but it's the same thing).

With regard to the instructions, google it.  There are a LOT of messages.

  • ESX 5 How to access disk space on newly created VM

    Hi all

I'm new to VMWare and trying to learn so please bear with me.

I'm under ESX 5 on a USB N36L Microserver HP.

Before installing ESX, I used the microserver as a Windows 2008 R2 server. I've used DISK2VHD for converting my physical machines C: drive virtual hard drive and then used the client VCenter Converter to convert the virtual hard disk to a virtual machine VMWare.

I started the ESX virtual machine and everything works OK. However, I now attach the D: drive of the physical machine on the virtual machine. How can I do this? I tried running DISK2VHD, but the disc is of 2 TB D2V fails as the disc is too big.

The HARD drive containing the D: NTFS volume is always inside the microserver, can I simply access it through the virtual machine without conversion?

The HARD drive with the volume D: is not part of my data store, if I try to add vSphere tells me that I will lose all data. I did not backup, but I hope that there is an easy solution for this?

    Thank you very much

    Robbie

I managed to access the drive I wanted through RDM following this post

  • Local storage for ESXi - SD USB or a traditional hard drive

We will replace our ESX host soon with new hardware and I'm on the fence about the use of a player USB SD 4 GB or traditional hard drives in a RAID. Obviously, the reader SD has its advantages, namely its speed and reliability, but is reliable enough to give up using redundant hard drives?

As someone mentioned previously, we spend much of our time concerned with our redundant hard disks, expecting to fail. Several times the failure is related to moving parts in the drive also. SD readers have the pleasure of having no moving parts to wear out or fail. But what good are they?

Sells the dealer that I spoke with them for 3 years and never heard of a failure. His $62 for 4 GB, so it's not a bottom of the line edit. It is designed to be in a HP DL380G7, once again, I doubt that it is a lower end model.

I'm leaning toward the SD drive rather than traditional drives, but I wanted to get feedback from others who may have used this before configuration. I'm looking for the successes and failures (and the reason for the failure).

4 GB is enough for installation (ESXi 4.1) and I have not any more local storage as VM is on the shared storage and the assistance as AppSpeed and esXpress VM program I can also install it on the shared storage (where in our current datacenter these are installed on the local storage). Or should I worry about this size with respect to logging or something else?

    Thanks in advance, please discuss.

    Eduard Tieseler

I had a fight 100 ESX hosts running by USB - only questions I ever had were with the original green USB keys that HP provided in the first days of ESXi on USB.

I like the approach of USB for several reasons:

    1. no local physical disk required, less moving parts = less material problems

    2. If you have local physical disks, you can use these as the dumping grounds for the ISOs etc.

    3. If rebuilding a server, I can remove the old USB key and press a new - and recover simply by replacing the OLD USB key

    4. I can pre-generate a USB one double key as a method of construction of servers in bulk (not tested on 4.1u1 well)

    5. I've had many many hard drive failures. . USB (except Green HP ones) have never failed on me.

In addition, your syslog problem isn't treally a 0 - practice problem is to get servers to connect to a centralized in any case syslog box (I would even if I used not USB/SD)

Good luck - let us know what you decide.

Don't know if it's SO hard or not, but ESX does not support USB port mapping yet.

  • support for USB dongle

It is my understanding that ESX 4 supports the usb of the virtual machine. I also understand that VMotion does not support virtual machines that use the usb dongles. I plugged a USB stick in the host ESX 4, but I don't see where I need to configure the virtual machine to use the usb dongle. Can you please point in the direction of the documentation or tell me what configurations changes needed to make the visible usb dongle (s) to the virtual machine?

    Graceful,.

    Nelson

ESX does not support USB transfer, as in VMware Workstation etc. If you need to access USB dongles and also need to vMotion, you can watch the solution USB Anywhere of Digi (http://www.digi.com/products/usb/anywhereusb.jsp). It allows you to access USB devices over TCP/IP network. Works with most Windows systems.

We have good experiences with this and just love it

  • HARD drive external USB

I would if I could attach external USB HARD disk or a disc flsh to the VMware host server.

  • How can I add an iso for ESXi storage?

    Hello

completely new to all this Yes, you can be sweet. I have ESXi 3.5 running on a spare Dell 1850 (2 x 3.4 GB cpu, 3 GB of Ram) and I am trying to install a guest operating system.

My server has a DVD disc (CD only), so I was hoping I could connect my DVD client and install the operating system from there. It worked (up to a point) for Home Server, except that it could not say that he had the wrong type of hard drive during the installation process but I will Google the error later.

I tried this same process Setup Win server 2003 and for some reason any, it does not detect my DVD drive connected, I don't know why but. I also read that ESX doesn't recognize USB storage so that the idea is also out.

In any case, I read that you can store the iso images on the data store and install directly with them by changing the settings of the server to the client. It would be a much better solution, but I don't see anyway to put the iso image on the ESX Server. How this is done? You can do this through the client application?

    Thank you

    Hedley

Welcome to the Forums - to move an ISO to one of data warehouses is to use the browser of data store of vi client - the tab configuration of storage of data - right-click on the data store and one of the menu options will be Brose Datastore - you will be able to use it to move your ISO to the data - store image

  • ESXi and equipment series

    Hello

I would like to move some of our servers the 1.06 Server vm to esxi 3.5. All the vm is running centos 5.2.

I have yet 2 servers to convert, because of the physics of the serial ports not supported in esx.

The first has an analog modem on ttyS0, secondary had a GSM modem on ttyS0.

As far as I know, it is not possible to connect a usb device to a virtual computer on esxi (or at least, I can't add a usb controller), so usb & lt;-& gt; series converters are not a viable option.

For the modem, I thought internally. Are there compatible models, so that I should look at?

For the GSM modem, I thought the series & lt;-& gt; ethernet converters. Is there a pro/consfor those?

    Thank you

    Giuliano

For USB devices, we use USB to Ethernet that works really well and is much better than plug in USB devices in any server.

I don't think its possible to get a serial through ESX device, is it USB-> Serial converter?  If you can you use it in conjunction with the USB to Ethernet

You have installed the wrong driver. The base driver is mainly for Linux or Mac. You need the full version of DAQmx.
