ESXi 4.1 U1 - partition scratch on SD/USB card?

Hello

I'm testing ESXi 4.1 U1 on installation of the SD card. The question is about scratches partition i.e. newspapers, vm-taking in charge of the dumps etc. I read a lot of discussion and blogs, look at VMworld ESXi session, but I'm not sure that I fully understand the creation of a partition scratch on USB/SD cards.

I started on this http://searchvmware.techtarget.com/tip/Installing-ESXi-41-on-flash-drives-despite-new-restrictions of Eric Siebert post where he mentioned to ESXi 4.1, I need min 5 GB of space which is 8 GB SD. Arguments that it it's due to the partition scratch which takes 4 GB. I think that's not true because I can't create partition scratch on USB/SD. This status confirms KB http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1033696 where they wrote cannot create partition scratch on USB/SD because of the limited number of entries for VMware.

I have test ESXi 4.1 installation on SD 4GB and 8GB SD. The zero score has not been configured on 4 GB or 8 GB and only one of the possibilities was to create partition scratch on VMFS datastore.

Where is the law? Is there that one partition possible scratch creation for the installation of SD/USB on VMFS datastore or I can create it directly on SD/USB card?

The second question is why VMware requires 5 GB to spare for installation during the installation on SD 4 GB is completed successfully and 4 GB is the largest supported SD/USB card for HP servers?

Thanks for your experiences!

Installable or embedded only describe the destination media not a difference in the product installed. There is only a single installation. If it is installed to HD it is installable. If it is installed to USB or SD, it is integrated. You can not use the card SD or USB for scratch. It is not a big deal anyway. Yet once the zero score is not necessary for normal operation. You can use a single data store to create the destination scratch locations. Because they are not partitions which absorb a few records space for something that you can never use they don't essentionally must be empty.

... what I do pay attention on the ESXi host to maximize the life of the USB? Maybe switch logs in a data store, if possible?

VMware optimizes access R/W if you install ESXi on a flash or SD drive. If I'm not mistaken, some changes are written only once in an hour. Depending on the size of the flash player, you can configure the location of the scratch partition (which is used for discharges of support etc.) to be on one of your data warehouses (HARD drive)

Someone at - it information on how long will last my with ESXi USB flash drive?

This depends mainly on the quality of the drive itself. Some providers (like Dell) offer models of server with two type of a RAID1 SD cards.

  • How will I know ESXi installed on the local hard drive or usb or SAN?

    Hi all

Here, I have IBM Storage node flex and midsize, this storewize is divided in two. I want to know where my esxi os installed? all orders to find?

    Hello

So you can run esxcfg-info-e and you will get your startup BACK type, it will be either visor-thin (means ESXi installable, means in general you are installed on the local disk or SAN), visor-usb (ESXi embedded, usually means you are installed on USB or SD or visor-pxe to PXE deployment.)

If you want to go further, you can run ls-lisa/dev/discs and you should be able to identify your device initialization as one with a load of partitions, as the vm1.0000xxxx entries in the result below:

To further clarify, go back to your ls-lisa/dev/discs out and now you know that you have the right device, enter the path to your drive ID, in this case, mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0, then run esxcli nmp storage devices list | grep mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0

and you will get your device nickname, so:

~ # esxcli list of nmp storage device | grep mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0

    MPX.vmhba32:C0:t0:l0

Device display name: USB Direct - access Local (mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0)

Hope this helps, this should be good for ESXi 5.x and above all, I believe, something you might need to sub partedUtil for fdisk.

    Good luck!

  • I want to edit the partitions on a micro SD card

I have a Raspberry Pi 2B model I want to start on the boot on its micro SD card partition, then run the command Linux Raspian of the partition root on a USB Flash drive. (The ' file commandline.txt is replaced by direct run from the USB after booting linux.

I made an image file Raspbian Linux on my MBPro and created a micro SD for the raspberry Pi card and verified that it works correctly in the Pi.

I also have a picture of Raspbian Linux on a USB 32Gig.

My trouble lies in the use of BSD Unix and Mac disk utility tools. In particular, I can't use the 'fdisk' UNIX to remove the partition root of the micro SD card and I can not use BSD UNIX 'fdisk' too remove the 'boot' partition in the USB Flash drive.

I don't have another card reader that I can connect it to the Pi, or I could use the Linux 'fdisk' to remove the required partitions.

    Any suggestions?

Have you tried using fdisk in the Terminal? I doubt he'll do anything you want, but it does not support dumping the partition table.

  • partition creation scratching on a USB flash drive.

Hi all, the host, ESXi 41 is started from 4 GB USB flash drive. 4 GB, 1 GB is used for the partition to the OS. ZERO has not been configured due to lack of free space required, 4 GB. Is it possible to use the freespace (3 GB) to scratch partition? I created a FAT16 partition with the space (3 GB). However, I have no idea how to convert\mount like partion to scratch. -l' host is not a local drive. Your help is very appreciated.

    Amel says:

ESXi 41 is started from 4 GB USB flash drive. 4 GB, 1 GB is used for the partition to the OS. ZERO has not been configured due to lack of free space required, 4 GB.

The device must as well be greater than 5 GB, but also be a physical hard disk for scratch partition to be created. If on USB, there is not a scratch partition little matter the size of the USB unit.

  • ESXi 5.0 boot partition size

What is the size of storage recommended for installing ESXi 5.0?

I recommend you do at least 6 GB (I usually use 10GB). Depends on how the systems of storage performer GBs (1 GB = 1,000 * 1,000 KB or 1,024 * 1,024 kb) 5 GB may not be enough.

  • In any case, to get space ESX and ESXI servers disk root partitions?

I just wanted to see if there was a simple script I could run to check disk space on local servers - space not logic unit number. We had a situation where the root partition has been completed and caused a problem. I was wondering if there was a way to check using Powercli

    Cheers in advance!

Have you ever had a glance at monitoring of the use of the ESX host storage (for example: / var/log) with PowerShell ?

Condition that sudo is configured correctly on the ESX Server, it uses plink.exe to establish an SSH connection to the ESX Server and then executes a "df" for file systems and their size.

    Well, I have work.

Here's what I had to do:

Follow the instructions here free: http://kb.lsi.com/KnowledgebaseArticle15548.aspx

They are a little dated, but they get the essential overall.

He suggested significant changes to the CLI:

    Add a c - to order.

    So, I found myself running:

    C:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin > vihostupdate.pl perl-Server x.x.x.x - root username - password rootpassword - b D:\Sandbox\3ware\offline-bundle.zip-i c

Regarding the out-of-line-bundle used: take the file listed for the 9550 for ESX(I) non - here: http://kb.lsi.com/KnowledgebaseArticle15753.aspx#vmware

    Inside, it is a 3w - 9xxx.iso (a tw_cli)

the off - bundle.zip extracted the ISO and use it.

What can I do now? Is this bug or just, do not boot from the local disk support?

Since the fdisk-l to output provided, its clear that the 2nd partition is missing. The 2nd parition in ESXi Installable is the partition scratch (FAT16 file system), which is by default to 4 GB. During the upgrade the parition is resized to scrape (about 150 MB of space is used 4 GB) to extend the bootbanks of 49 MB to 256 MB.

I don't know the exact reason why the partition scratch missing here since it is generally created during the default installation. One possibility could be that there was a parition scratch already available on a secondary drive during installation and setup it has not created on the primary drive.

A standard partition for ESXi 3.5 with partition table scratch would look something like the following...

Remember the location, you can proceed as follows (I shows that the party concerned).

    {if ($DS)}

    Push-Location

    Set-Location - path $ds. DatastoreBrowserPath

    New-Item $tgtName ItemType - directory

    Pop-Location

    Game-VMHostAdvancedConfiguration-name $configName - value ('/ vmfs/volumes /' + $ds.) Name + "/" + $tgtName) - Server $esxi - confirm: $false

As far as I know, a reboot of the ESXi is required to activate the change

  • How can I automate the creation of a partition from scratch for a large number of hosts?

I would like to help with the following steps to cerate a partition scratch on all hosts that have no script, then reprot back to me which guests were to have created.

all my ESXi hosts have a LUN to start with the space, all the boot LUN are named with the same naming that is conveiton "hostname-localstorage.

I would like to come up with a script that will check each host in a cluster for a partition of scaratch, if it does not create the folder ".locker -hostname" on local storrage and then set the partition scratching to the new location. Then the new report to me, which is already a partition from scratch and those to whom he owed create a parition scratch to so I can plan then a good time to put the hosts with newly created partitions scratch mainenance mode and restart their.

I glued the manual way to do it below. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give and it will be well appreciated. I try to avoid to do 1000 hours below. Thanks in advance...

Note: Before you begin, make sure that/tmp/scratch exists. If it does not exist, create it by using the command #mkdir/tmp/scratch.
    1. Open a command prompt where the PowerCLI is installed.
    2. Connecting to host ESXi using the command:

      connect-viserver ESXHostnameOrIP

    3. A list of the data stores accessible by using the ESXi Host command:

      Get-Datastore

    4. Mount a read/write as a PSDrive data store using the command:

New-PSDrive -Name "mounteddatastore" -Root \ -PSProvider VimDatastore -Datastore (Get-Datastore "DatastoreName")

    5. Access the PSDrive new using the command:

      Set-Location mounteddatastore:

    6. Create a directory named only for the ESXi host using the command:

      New-Item "DirectoryName" -ItemType directory

      For example:

      New-Item ".locker-ESXHostname" -ItemType directory

    7. Check the current value of the ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation configuration with the command option:

      Get-VMHostAdvancedConfiguration -Name "ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation"

    8. Change the ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation configuration option, specifying the full path to the directory created in step 6, using the command:

      Set-VMHostAdvancedConfiguration -Name "ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation" -Value "/vmfs/volumes/DatastoreName/DirectoryName"

      For example:

      Set-VMHostAdvancedConfiguration  -Name "ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation" -Value  "/vmfs/volumes/Datastore1/.locker-ESXHostname"

    9. The ESXi host in maintenance mode and restart so that the configuration change to take effect.

I have something similar to use the script below.

I think you'll find that your out in there.

    $configName = 'ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation'

    $mode,$warn = Get-PowerCLIConfiguration | %{$_.DefaultVIServerMode,$_.DisplayDeprecationWarnings}Set-PowerCLIConfiguration -DefaultVIServerMode "Multiple" -DisplayDeprecationWarnings:$false

    Get-VMHost | where {$_.ExtensionData.Config.Product.ProductLineId -eq "embeddedEsx"} | %{    Connect-VIServer -Server $_.Name -User root -Password MyPswd    $scratch = (Get-VMHostAdvancedConfiguration -VMHost $_)[$configName]    $tgtName = ".locker-" + $_.Name.Split('.')[0]    if($scratch -notmatch ($tgtName + "$")){        $ds = Get-Datastore -VMHost $_ | where {$_.Name -match "localstorage"}        if($ds){            Set-Location -Path $ds.DatastoreBrowserPath            New-Item $tgtName -ItemType directory            Set-VMHostAdvancedConfiguration -Name $configName -Value ('/vmfs/volumes/' + $ds.Name + '/' + $tgtName) -Confirm:$false            Set-VMHost -VMHost $_ -State 'Maintenance' -Confirm:$false            Restart-VMHost -VMHost $_ -Confirm:$false            Set-VMHost -VMHost $_ -State 'Connected' -Confirm:$false        }    }    Disconnect-VIServer -Server $_.Name}

    Set-PowerCLIConfiguration -DefaultVIServerMode $mode -DisplayDeprecationWarnings:$warn

It uses the DatastoreBrowserPath that Vitali has suggested.

  • Disk partedUtil utility command-line on ESXi disk partitioning

    Hi all

I created the partition by using the utiliy of command-line partedUtil on ESXI in the face of error below:

    • error: "Invalid guid (0xfb). Contains non hexadecimal numbers
    • Is not a valid guid (fb). Length should be 32
    • Is not a valid guid (251). Length should be 32

Can you advise me how to solve the problem of the partition.

    Hi Prashant.

VMFS data warehouses can be created and deleted using the vSphere client connected to an ESXi/ESX host or vCenter Server. It is not necessary to manually create partitions by using the command line utility. For more information, see the Configuration Guide for your version of ESXi/ESX storage management.

    Resolution

You can use the partedUtil command line utility to directly manipulate local and remote tables of partitions on the disks of SAN on ESX and ESXi.

The partedUtil command-line is only supported for ESXi 5.x disk partitioning. The command-line utility fdisk does not work with LUN formatted with VMFS5.

Note: This article is from the principle that a console session is available to the host ESX or ESXi, you're familiar with console management concepts and the disk, and you did backups appropriate before proceeding. For more information, see:

Unable to connect to a host ESX using Secure Shell (SSH) (1003807) or

Using the Mode of Support Tech in ESXi 4.1 and 5.x ESXi (1017910).

If you are not sure of any step, contact the VMware Support.

For more information on the re-creation of a missing VMFS partition table using PartedUtil see: re-creating a VMFS datastore partition missing in vSphere 5 (2046610)
