ESXi and vStorage API (multipathing)

Hello

Just out of curiosty. Is it possible to use vStoage API mulitpathing (i.e. EMC PowerPath) in ESXi 4?

My understanding is that it is supported in ESX 4 but do not know now if it is supported with ESXi installable version.

If you find this or any other answer useful please consider giving points by checking the answer useful or appropriate.

Theres a white book of Mike Lavericks RTFM site that shows its taken supported on ESX4i.

http://www.RTFM-ed.co.uk/docs/vmwdocs/whitepaper-EMC-PowerPath.PDF

Otherwise connect to EMC powerlink http://powerlink.emc.com under powerpath, see planning guide he says in there, too.

If you don't have a powerlink connection you can register for free.

Hope this helps

  • Are vStorage API for the Protection data supported on ESXi?

Hello - we are just turning on our production environment, and my supervisor found a rather disturbing comment on one of the VMware pages: "the vStorage API for Data Protection are the next generation of VMware Consolidated Backup and are provided with all editions of VMware vSphere except ESXi. »

We are currently using ESXi in our test lab and that you plan to use it in production, but it would be a major problem. I hope it comes to the free version of ESXi, but I can't find a definitive answer.  Incidentally, we either have a business and license.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    http://www.VMware.com/products/vSphere/buy/editions_comparison.html

You can see this vStorage API is included for all editions and all editions supporth both ESX and ESXi.

  • Backup of the guests on 'free' esxi, Veeam/Storage API

I started a new job and the company uses esxi 5 on a free key (confirmed by vmware support) and uses a 3rd party backup managed which consists of a hunger of sever running veeam. My first thought was that this is not possible due to the storage API locked on esxi when you use the "free" version However, I looked at the race of backup with the ok on the vsphere log viewer. I can't get access to the server of Veeam to check.

Still, ive talked about Veeam and Vmware new who have confirmed my thoughts that this will not work on the 'free' version However, it seems to work... How is that possible? I missed something fundamental.

I'm looking to replace the backup managed by our own but I am 100% I need licenses esxi for (and to a later version) to get my veeam bought to work.

    Thank you.

The vStorage API is locked in the only hypervisor license so an instant backup wouldn't work, however, Veeam has the ability to use SSH/SCP to backup virtual machines (full copy).

  • How to use the vStorage API?

    Hi all

I heard that vStorage is a feature of vSphere 4.0 that can take backup of the virtual machine directly without using a Proxy VCB.

Does someone know how to use it? as far as I know only commercial 3rd party backup software can use it, do not use any script solution or freeware.

    Kind regards

    AWT

I've heard both sides of the story (even from VMware peeps)

    (1) vStorage API is today essentially vSphere API + VDDK (e.g. change block tracking feature is in the new vSphere API, accessible using the SDK)

    (2) vStorage API is reserved for VMware partners to develop 3rd party applications (not 100% sure on this subject, but I know that some people have said this)

Probably best to contact your VMware representative if you have any questions or interest in development on the vStorage API (probably why there not a forum on the vStorage API developers forum)

  • License vStorage API

    Hi all

Poster for the first time, so be gentle!

I have ESXi 4.1 installed on a test server, to test the restorations of real environment.

We use Backup Exec 2010 (having recently updated Backup Exec 12.5)

With 12.5 being VCB, I was able to import the VM using VMWare Converter or BE restored.

With 2010 using the vStorage API, I am unable to restore a computer from Backup Exec virtual using the redirect to my box of Test ESXi.

The error relates to not be able to create the virtual machine (if I create the virtual computer, he then complains about not being able to change the power state)

I have followed the issue up to the free license, if I leave it on the eval license I can restore OK.

What is the best way to allow access to the preference vStorage API without having to buy a full license?

    Thank you very much

    Andy

The API is only read the free license. I don't know any other way apart from the upgrade to a paid version.

  • vStorage API available with ESX 3.0.2?

    Hi all

recently I discovered to my surprise, there is some backup products that support the backup of virtual machines using the vStorage API even on versions earlier than 4.0 vSphere. Verizon says that vStorage API is supported from ESX 3.0.2! (CMP.  http://www.vizioncore.com/products/vRangerPro/documents/vRangerProDPP_vStorage_API_FAQ.pdf). And NBU 7.0 also supports the backup of virtual machines on ESX 3.5. I tested the latter - it really works without VCB.

On the other hand, it is documented in all VMware documentation, I am aware of what the vStorage API is new to vSphere 4.0.

If anyone knows when it actually introduced to VMware vStorage API? Or is there an interface implemented in ESX quite a long time, but was not used?

I thank the of for any information on this topic...

    Best regards

    Christian

It is false, the vStorage API is only available with vSphere, this is when he was introduced by VMware. Specifically for backup/replication, it is the API vStorage for Protection (VADP) data and block the track changes function which reduces the backup to a virtual computer window as it copies only the blocks that have changed. This feature requires not only vSphere but also hardware VM 7, which is only available with vSphere, so I don't know why Vizioncore calling for this feature in their documentation, it is a false advertising.

Support for pre-vSphere is probably in the VCB framework and I believe that the other suppliers of backups before vSphere tried / has implemented something 'similar' to block the track changes, but once again the official VMware vStorage API is a feature from vSphere.

  • vStorage API Powercli backup?

    Hello

We use a powershell script on our VCB proxy to save our VMs. basically the PS script queries the vCenter for VMS save a then it is simply a wrapper for running the command vcbmounter on the proxy vcb with the appropriate settings.

Given the VCB support will be removed from the next version of vSphere, I wonder if it will be possible to use the vStorage API for backup and restoration of the PowerCLI. I couldn't find any cmdlets corresponding to do this. It will be this possible or is it planned to integrate these functions into a next PowerCLI version?

    Best regards

    Jan

It is not the cmdlets for vStorage (yet?).

I'm in the same boat as you, and I hope that it will soon of cmdlets.

You can try the fixitchris.net wrapper, see VDDK 1.0 Managed Wrapper.

But the packaging is not for the latest VMware virtual disk Development Kit.

  • 4 ESXi and VMware vSphere CLI

    Hello

I can't start a discussion in the community CLI to I write here.

When I try to use the CLI tools to manage a few shots on an ESXi 4 Server I get strange errors.

    CMD: snapshotmanager.pl - Server XXX.XXX.XXX. XXX - XXXXXX - nom_snapshot Test vmname - create operation

    Result:

    Fault:

    SOAP fault:

    -

    Error string: error. RestrictedVersion.summary

    Lack of details: RestrictedVersionFault

The operation using 'list' works very well but not create or delete.

No idea why it does not work for a 4.0 host but is ideal for a 3.5?

The reason why it worked for you on ESXi 3.5 is probably the version you were using was U2 or U3 where the VI API has an internal bug that allowed two full read/write access, which allows you to perform operations such as switching to a virtual computer or take a snapshot. Go ESXi 3.5u4 +, which includes 4.0 moving forward, the API VI is read-only. Before more details please look here: http://vmetc.com/2009/03/31/esxi-u4-ends-free-version-read-and-write-access-from-the-rcli/

You still have a few options, either unlock the console SSH not supported to automate snapshots using vimsh vim - cmd wrapper, using the VI Client or use VMware VIX and vmrun which currently is not governed by the VI API, take a look here for more information: is not happy with lockdown 3.5u4 VI API/RCLI ESXi? Worry not, VMware VIX to the rescue... for now =)

Apologies for a question very newb-ish, but my knowledge of the vCD is very limited.

vCD-> ESXi group has and ESXi cluster B

    2. several server vCenter, with their own groups of ESXi.

I hope that all the senses.  I'll be happy to extrapolate more.

    Hello

    Please find the answers

    1. multiple ESXi clusters under the vCenter even?

vCD-> ESXi group has and ESXi cluster B

Yes, VCD support certainly take the resources of multiple clusters. To be more specific model allocation is deciding factor we can extend on cluster or not.

    2. several server vCenter, with their own groups of ESXi.

vCD-> A vCenter and vCenter B.  vCenter-> Cluster A1 ESXi and ESXi cluster A2.  vCenter B-> Cluster B1 ESXi and ESXi cluster B2.

Yes, we can certainly have several VC related to VCD. To max, it supports 25 VC.

This doesn't seem to be just if I can just add warehouses of data on each disk individually.

  • a few questions about ESXi and SAN CF with HP P2000 G3

    Hello everyone!

I am new to ESXi and SAN, then I need help for her.

I have Encolosure C7000 system with 4 blades BL460c already installed ESXi 5.1U1 (HP custome ISO image). Everything works fine now, but I do not understand something:

-What is the management network which I use vSphare Client to connect to? It is a private network to manage ESXi servers what difference with VMnetwork used by Virtual Machines? Because I've set up an IP address for this connection manually, but it is of course separate with IP addresses, I used on Virtual Machines.

-If my system has problem, so I have to reinstall ESXi, license keys can be used again? Already, I have 8 license key for 4 blades (2 CPUs per server), but they have not yet used. Because I am new to ESXi, cause I had to reinstall ESXi several times to understand.

-When I install successful ESXi, I don't know how to start working with SAN. What should I configure P2000 before it be plugged into the SAN switch? Or I can plug it then config later? Because I don't see it on the ESXi server. And on the OS I installed on the Guest Virtual Machines, I see nothing new in Device Manager. I thought that this guest operating system will detect the mezzanine card. But I see only mezzanine card that connect to the P2000 by SAN switch in ESXi (see image here http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/684/dsc04088k.jpg ). To my knowledge, I think that ESXi server have to detect the P2000 as hardware device. Can someone teach me step by step install and configure a San on ESXi? Or show me a tutorial because I searched but only iSCSI results.

Yes, it's a separate network used only for traffic management between ESXi hosts and vCenter - it is also the network used to connect to the environment - that's different, then the network used by your virtual machines

Yes the license keys can be reused, and if you use vCenter licenses will be managed by vCenter

Yes, you will be able to configure the San later - by default, the virtual machine will not see the SAn, as it is virtualized by your ESXi host - all the VM will see is a virtual SCSi disk - this doc's guide to vmware for storage - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-511-storage-guide.pdf - you can visit the website of HP they might have documentation on configuring P2000 for vSphere -.

I want to know the differences between ESX and ESX? where can get. If they are distinguished by the features that are available are not available.

Most of the features are available in available in ESX ESXi. In order to get the full functionality of ESXi, the host must be managed by vCenter Server.
